Like witchy stories with secrets, twists, and unexpected powers? This one has it all — from a main character whose magic doesn’t fit the norm, to a mysterious being that’s stalking her with deadly intent. It’s a wild ride full of surprises and dark turns, and it’s so interesting to see where the story is headed. The art is beautifully done and in full color, which makes it even more enjoyable. A captivating and magical read that pulls you in and keeps you hooked!

3.75 out of 5 (rounded to 4)
This graphic novel has a beautiful hand-drawn style, with several full-page spreads that are absolutely stunning. Visually, it's a standout.
It took me a little while to settle into the plot, but once I got a better grasp of the characters and their dynamics, the story really started to click. The magic system is unique and full of potential—I’m definitely intrigued.
Excited to see where Volume 2 takes things!

"Muted: Volume 1" by Miranda Mundt is an absolute delight to read.
I devoured this in less than a day!
Besides being incredibly gorgeous, the art style compliments perfectly the plot and the characters. I felt genuine affection for all the characters, even the side ones who only showed up for a few pages!
This story has a way to keep you invested. Though this is not classified as a comedy, I caught myself laughing a lot. There were so many scenes where the characters were so endearing - the facial expressions were on point!
Nevertheless, inside this beautiful package hides a deeper, tragic tale of a lost girl trying to find a place where she belongs.
Add all that to sapphic, polyamorous witches and you got me!!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.

I was a fan of this Webtoon when it was originally released and I am so excited to see it published.
This is the story that taught me about generational trauma and how to deal with it. I love the complexity of the characters and how family plays into identity.

First of all, thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC!
This is a story about a girl named Camilla learning to accept her different brand of magic while surrounded by a family who believes in magical purity. Its a fun and funny tale that navigates darker themes of belonging and depression, while balancing those elements with fun parties, awkward encounters and super cute familiars.
I loved this art style and I can absolutely see why this story is best told as a graphic novel.
Can't wait for the next installment!

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC!

This was a fun read! The story surrounds witches and each coven and how different their power is from one another. The story also covers trauma, generational trauma, toxic family members, acceptance, grief, rediscovery and so much more.
Camilla is a very interesting character and you go along with her on this journey to figure out the secrets of her life and magic. You can’t help but feel for her and everything that she’s been through.
One of my favorite parts of this book is all the different kinds of magic. They do a good job differentiating each different magic style and making it its own unique style and aspect.
Also I loved all the familiars, especially Toben

I really enjoyed the story and the graphics. I was drawn in by the blurb that promised sapphic love triangles and retelling of fairytales and it did not miss. I recommend Muted: Volume 1 to any graphic novel lover.

I was drawn to Muted by the blurbed promise of sapphic love triangles and fairy tale retelling, but found it lacking in both. I am heartened to see it labeled as a first volume, because if there is more to come I think it has a lot of potential. I would read the next installment for sure, but reading this as a stand alone was a bit disappointing.

Muted, a story about witches with beautiful art has me thrilled.
The settings were so beautiful and fitting, sometimes cozy, othertimes harsh... The characters were complex and I can not wait for the plot to develop further, there's so much potential character growth and don't think that I haven't noticed the hints of some (sapphic) romance...
I'm really pity Camille for her lossesbut I'm also proud of her for knowing what she wants and not fitting into her witch family.
My guess for the future; Athalie did it. That's it.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced digital copy.

This first volume delivers a truly compelling start to a new graphic novel series. The journey begins with a summoning ritual gone unexpectedly awry, a fantastic catalyst that immediately pulls you into Camille's world and sets the stage for her profound journey. The way the storytelling unfolds is remarkably smooth and engaging, effortlessly guiding you from the high-pressure dynamics of her family home to her desperate escape into the Louisiana swamps.
What stands out is how skillfully the narrative transitions. You feel Camille's initial apprehension and the weight of her aunt's expectations, making her eventual search for self-discovery and the solace of newfound connections all the more impactful. The integration of various elements—from the intriguing supernatural aspects and complex family secrets to the tender development of relationships—feels genuinely organic. Nothing feels forced; instead, each component naturally contributes to a rich, immersive experience.
The pacing after the initial ritual is particularly well-executed, allowing for a satisfying exploration of character growth and plot progression. It’s here that the story truly shines, as you witness Camille uncover truths about her past and begin to heal. The bonus content at the end was a welcome addition, providing even more depth to an already captivating narrative.
This graphic novel is a testament to expertly crafted storytelling, drawing you in and holding your attention from start to finish. It establishes its characters and world with such care, all while propelling the plot forward in a way that feels both natural and exciting. Highly recommended!

This was unexpectedly delightful. From the characters to the plotline everything was solid and well structured. The artwork is also mesmerising.
Love the found family element as well as the self discovery the protagonist goes through.

Muted is a graphic novel that follows Camille, a witch. There are multiple witch families with different powers that we meet throughout the story.
The art style was really nice and especially the colour work was very well done.
The main issue that i have with this was that i found the pacing rather rushed. This made it feel a bit illogical as to why she would trust some people so quickly. I also felt that it ended quite abruptly. I understand that this is only volume 1, but it didn’t really stand on its own.
I will say i did enjoy the different families and the different types if magic. I also found the character designs to be strong and Camille was a likeable main character.
I simply wish I enjoyed this a bit more than i did.
Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own

Muted was a quite interesting reading: characters and settings are well developed and surely show their potential for the future issues of the series. One particularly positive remark goes to the beautiful landscape drawings and the characters posters at the beginning of each chapter.
However, being #1 in the series, it also takes time to fully introduce the characters, their surroundings and where they come from, which often resulted in a slow paced narration. Many topics were just introduced, but very few actually reached the end of their narrative arch. I get it, I do, there will be other book in the series, but I would have not been disappointed by some more action and “revelations” being unfolded.
That said, I would recommend it and I look forward to reading the rest of the story.

Reading this graphic novel was a fun and immersive experience. The beautiful artwork really emphasized the contrast between Camille's frigid and unloving aunt, and the cozy and nurturing community she discovers. I loved following Camille's journey as she learns more about where she comes from and how that knowledge will help her unlock her power and potential. I can't wait to read Volume 2!

First, thank you so much for the eARC, it made my whole week. I will post my official review on StoryGraph July 6th, as you prefer it to come closer to the date of the book, but I absolutely needed to express my praise here already.
I am so excited for this book to come to life! I was following the Webtoon closely as it was coming out, and always thought it would be a wonderful story to be published.
First, of course, the color are URG! absolutely wonderful. Quite frankly would buy it just for the art. The way it’s like watercolor and the scenes in nature are so bright and colorful and beautiful, and then when it’s with her family it’s ‘muted’ instead?! What a great way to use the media to help cary the story.
The characters and the story themselves are great too! I really like the designs, and the different family dynamics are so interesting!
Little spoiler, but my favorite character as always been Nora and I am overjoyed to see her again. She is simply the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, and I want to marry her right now. (And I mean, she got a fox as a familiar!! Come on now!!)
I love witches stories and every single character is so fun to explore, as well as all the different powers. It’s just a wonderful time frankly, I would always recommend this story if you want angsty sapphic witches in a beautifully crafted world.
I already have the second volume saved up (Thank you SO much to the publisher again.) and I cannot wait to keep enjoying this series in a new format! To the author, I think it’s so so great that you managed to get a publishing deal, and I wish you nothing but the very best. Cannot wait to read more.

Muted, Vol. 1 is a hauntingly beautiful and emotionally rich Southern Gothic tale that weaves magic, mystery, and identity into a spellbinding graphic novel. Miranda Mundt delivers a gorgeously illustrated story full of lush swamps, eerie ancestral rituals, and a heroine trying to reclaim her power in a family that constantly tries to suppress it.
Camille Severin is a compelling lead—quietly defiant, full of grief, and determined to uncover the truth behind the fire that stole her mother and twin sister. Returning to her family’s isolated Louisiana manor, she’s faced with a terrifying tradition: summon a demon or forfeit her place in the matriarchy. But when the ritual goes “wrong,” it sparks a journey that’s anything but a failure. What unfolds is a beautiful coming-of-age tale wrapped in vines, shadows, and secrets.
The artwork is breathtaking—lush, moody, and atmospheric, with striking character designs and vivid depictions of both magic and emotion. Every panel feels intentional, whether it’s steeped in tension or glowing with warmth during quiet moments of connection between Camille, her cousin Silvia, or her fiercely loyal familiar, Toben.
What makes Muted shine is its emotional depth. It’s a story about grief, trauma, queerness, and finding strength in unexpected magic. The romance is tender, the family dynamics are complex and painful, and the mystery builds with perfect pacing. Even as it explores dark themes, it never loses its heart.
Muted, Vol. 1 is a stunning debut that casts a long, lingering spell. Perfect for fans of Witchlight, Mooncakes, or The Witch Boy, this is a must-read for anyone who loves their magic steeped in secrets, swamps, and self-discovery.

I loved this and can't wait for the next volume. I love the art style and the usage of colors, its truly lovely. I love the story as well, the trauma our main character has is very realistic and i love the entire world building in this. I love to subtle romance bread crumbs and the whole story.

I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel--the artwork, the story, the budding romance--I loved it! I'll definitely keep reading this series!

Graphic novel that uses all the traditional ways to hook, with a little bit of a young woman mistreated by her aunt and a lot of personal problems caused by not being able to please the aunt or convince herself that she is worth something, but also of discovery and the flowering of love and knowing that another life is possible and that things can change for the better.
It also has a bit of a mystery, also a woman, and although the magic is basically unnecessary for most of the plot, it is very visual, helping the graphic site, as well as the scenes in the swamp.

I really loved this! I love the art style, it’s beautiful and cute and I loved the world building with the different witch families and familiars. Especially Lavender, so cute! I also liked the backstory and the mysteries surrounding everything, I just had to keep reading! And with that ending I can’t do anything other than ask to please let me read the next one asap haha. Can’t wait to dive into this world again and see what happens. I need more of the sweet character that was introduced at the end, so prettily drawn! I also need more of this love story that are about to unfold. And more Lavender! And the cute foxes!
