Muted: Volume 1 is a refreshing and heartfelt comic that blends humor, emotion, and relatable struggles in a beautifully illustrated package. Miranda Mundt’s expressive art style and sharp dialogue bring the characters to life, making their journeys feel genuine and engaging. The story’s exploration of identity, friendship, and self-acceptance is both touching and thought-provoking, with moments of quiet introspection balanced by witty banter.
While the pacing is generally strong, some transitions between scenes could be smoother, and a few secondary characters could benefit from more development. That said, the core narrative is compelling, leaving readers eager for more. A promising start to what looks to be a memorable series!

This graphic novel follows Camille, a witch who experiences something wrong during her families summoning ritual. Instead of summoning a demon, she summons plants and vines. She runs into the swamp and there she find out things that happened in her past.
The worldbuilding is good and the story proceeds fast. I am looking forward to read the next volumes because this one ends with a big cliffhanger!
You will love this graphic novel if you’re into:
- Witches
- Magic including summoning circles and blood rituals
- A sapphic main character
- Beautiful drawings and very hot girls!
Thanks Netgalley for letting me read this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Orphaned, Camille is taken in by her loving aunt, Matriarch Athalie. As Camille tries to prove herself, a summoning ritual does not go as planned. Everyone thinks there is something wrong with Camille and her abilities. Everyone except her real family that had been kept from her.
Her failed summoning gives her time alone and a chance to reunite with her familiar. Camille’s magic is not worthy of Athalie, but is true to who she is and promises to help her find who killed her mom and sister. Through new friendships, her summoned demon, and remembering her past, Camille begins to unlock family secrets.
Sapphic elements are soft and do not detract from the main plot line. Drinking scenes also include warnings that are not preachy. Vibrant colors and clever overlay of frames on splash helps draw you in and enhances emotional shifts, a visually beautiful journey.

Summoning ritual gone wrong. Love the witchy vibe. It is a bit slow in places, but it has that coming of age feel. I am very curious to see where it is going,

Well, I will say that, although this is marketed as both sapphic and poly, there was very little (ie: none) of either as the world of this story was set up here.
We are introduced to main character Camille, as well as her terrifying aunt and the cousin she loves. And still loves after the beginning of this story, though this story separates them and sets them on different paths fairly quickly.
It's suggested that Camille's aunt hates and has been cruel to her due to Camilla's father, not a secret or spoiler considering it's explored in the early part of this story, but ultimately Camilla turns out to be not who she thinks she is and it explains why her magic is not what she thinks that is either.
I have suspicions on who the relationships in this story may be. There is a demon summoned as part of Camille's main plot, in what also ends up being a bit break through in terms of her personal autonomy and no longer having to be scared of the past. And there is also this gorgeous black girl who is part of another family and is the first to show kindness to Camille despite their rocky start and the suspicion Camille held about the fire that killed both her mother and sister in her childhood.
Now that we know all of the main characters, I hope that the story picks up into some of those promised elements from here!

I did enjoy this. I felt there was too much language for me though and I felt there was a lot going on. I do like the idea of the story and am intrigued whats going to happen next.

A young witch learning about her magical abilities, new friends, old friends, demons, familiars, and family secrets- such a fun read and great art!

Camille is a witch struggling with her powers. After she flubs an important ritual and draws the disappointment of her domineering aunt, Camille is left behind at the family house to figure things out. The time away from her family only draws more questions as Camille tries to work out why her magic is so wonky, and interacts with other witch families.
This was great! I adore the art style, which has some truly beautiful illustrations as well as the occasional funny little doodle for humorous effect. Each character was also very distinct, which was really great. The use of color was also excellent and set the mood perfectly. I have no complaints with the pacing or plot either. It was super cute, and I'm definitely going to pick up the next volume of this story.

Thank you to the publisher for providing an advance copy of this book. Overall, I really enjoyed both the story and the artwork. The characters were compelling, and the plot kept me engaged throughout, though I did find myself yearning for more by the end. The first half of the book felt a bit repetitive at times, and there were moments when the dialogue seemed disjointed, which made it hard to fully immerse myself. However, the character development was strong, and by the second half, I found myself more invested. The real standout for me, though, was the artwork. The use of color was absolutely stunning, enhancing the emotional depth of the story and adding a unique layer to the narrative. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into the visuals, making it a truly beautiful reading experience.

This was such an exciting book great magic system and the characters relationships was very well thought out and had so many nuances to them that mimic a real relationship. The development of the background of the character was well developed and i loved the overall theme of this book and cannot wait to dive into volume 2.

✨Delightful art, great pacing, characters that hit… I'm obsessed with this!✨
Muted vol.1 is a paranormal graphic novel about Camille, a witch from a very important family of witches able to do magic blood. But, since her mother died, something is wrong with her and her relationship with the only family she has is in danger if she can’t perform magic. To figure out the problem, she must deal with old devils that are too painful to remember.
I need to start saying that, before reading this, I thought I couldn’t connect with graphic novels the way I do with prose novels, so I read them only sometimes because I enjoy the drawings. Muted vol.1 showed me that I was just picking the wrong ones, because the characters hit from chapter one. I had read a couple of pages and I was already dreading that something could happen to Camille.
I loved and cared for all the (good) characters. I shipped everyone and was curious about everything. But it’s not just the characters that are well-written, the plot is very compelling and the pacing is great. There aren't dull moments to introduce everyone at the beginning. This was not only an introduction, there were things happening, questions answered but there is still plenty to unravel.
From the reviews, this is a polyamorous sapphic romance, but in this book there is only one obvious love interest (although I have a second candidate). This promises to be a very slow burn sapphic romance, which I love.
Also, I was mesmerized by the designs of the characters, the drawing style and the colors. I can’t wait to read what the author is going to be doing in the next volumes.
Overall, I highly recommend this if you enjoy paranormal graphic novels full of female characters, witches and promises of slow burn sapphic love. Even if you think you don’t love graphic novels as much, as I thought, maybe you’ll finally fall in love with them. Now, if you excuse me, I’m going to beg Netgalley for an ARC of the second volume too because I cannot wait to continue reading this.
I kindly received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I don’t normally read graphic novels, but I found this a refreshing change of pace. The artwork is absolutely stunning. I mean, seriously, so vivid and bright and just wow. The story was interesting, and I’m keen to know more about what happens to Camille.
That being said, there were time where it felt a little slow going and not much happened. I also got a little frustrated with some aspects of the world / magic that I feel weren't fleshed out enough and left me confused as to how it all works and slots together.
Overall a pleasant, easy read that I think most people would enjoy.

4.5 rounded up
This was such a lovely read. A bit witchy, a bit whimsical, with a great story and great representation. The art is a fun mix of toon and manga, the illustrators style is pretty unique but so well done.
I’m dying to read the second one now!!

this was an amazing read. the art is beautiful and the story is very captivating. it took me a little while to get the hang of what was going on and who was who but i had such a good time reading it. immaculate witchy vibes throughout. highly recommend! i cant wait to read volume 2!

Very intrigued by Muted Volume 1 and can't wait to continue reading the series! A unique and interesting story that grapples with loss and self-discovery in a great way!

The color and illustrations in this novel will have you wrapped up in the story as you travel alongside Camille. Camille is just learning how to hone her powers in her family of witches, and her familiar, a bird named Soot, is constantly in her ear as an (attempted) voice of reason. The reader is pulled along as Camille learns, the hard way, who is worthy of her trust.
While this is a book for adults, I think teens and new adult readers would gain a lot from reading this coming-of-age story. "Muted" explores themes of what it means to inherit your family name, and the struggles that can ensue when trying to forge your own legacy.

Muted: Volume 1 is a lovely graphic novel with a unique worldbuilding and storyline that'll make you ask for more. I love how it's a mix of lighthearted and hopeful but at the same time, it has the perfect amount of dark and tragic. The art style is gorgeous, the magic system is something I'd want to know more and devour and I am here for it all

5 stars!
Muted: Volume 1 is a gorgeous, atmospheric graphic novel that blends magic, self-discovery, and the early stirrings of sapphic romance into something truly special. With rich themes of grief, trauma, and emotional neglect, the story explores how a young woman, Camille, finds her own power, identity, and healing through the strength of self-belief and found family.
As soon as I was 20% into this ARC provided by NetGalley, I preordered the physical copy. I knew I had to have it in my hands the moment it was released. I absolutely adore this story and am absolutely itching to continue with the series. The illustrations are absolutely stunning, with gorgeous colors that perfectly complement the eerie yet cozy tone of the story. While the narrative does touch on heavy themes, they’re handled with care and beautifully balanced by moments of warmth, friendship, and hope.
This is perfect for readers who love witchy, spooky stories with heart, and especially for younger readers looking for a strong, relatable protagonist who navigates the complexities of family expectations and self-worth. This will be a series that my pre-teen daughter and I will read together for sure. Camille’s journey is inspiring, and I can’t wait to see where her magic takes her next.

Ok so I am NOT typically a graphic novel girlie! But I saw this and it looked really interesting with themes that I love!
A polyamorous sapphic which book? Yes please.
For the good- the artwork was great! Even from someone who isn’t into that type of art the pictures were well done and did a great job telling the story that was written.
What I had trouble with was that the flow was very stilted and I don’t mean that in the typical sense as obviously prose can’t flow in a graphic novel like it does in a regular novel but it jumps through some parts really quickly so in 3 pages so much has technically happened but without real explanation. I think that’s the challenge. The book (which is in 2 parts and this is part 1) has so much that it wants to say that is just not doable in a graphic novel format. Whiplash is what I would use.
That being said, I want to read the second one as I want to know what happens! Especially since the romance is not really existent in part one so the description seems a bit misleading. I hope and expect it’ll be fleshed out more in part 2?
Part one comes out July 8th 2025.
I am thankful to have gotten a complimentary eARC from Ten Speed Press through NetGalley to read which gave me the opportunity to voluntarily leave a review.
My rating system since GoodReads doesn’t have partial stars
⭐️ Hated it
⭐️⭐️ Had a lot of trouble, prose issues, really not my cup of tea (potentially DNF’d or thought about it)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh, it was an ok read but nothing special
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really enjoyed it! Would recommend to others
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding! Will circle back and read again

Camille was orphaned by a fire when she was little, and left in the care of her aunt, who hates her and treats her very badly. She was trained to perform a family ritual and summon a demon, but she senses it's not what she wants, that something is wrong, and yes, something goes wrong...
I read it in one sitting, and I really want to know how this story continues.
