4.5 stars

Love this book (and series!) even if the kids being grown up from the Broken Kingdoms made me feel old lmao. This was already a great read full of things I loved (enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn!) but Sewellโ€™s story was an added bonus.

If you're looking for a slow burn, yearning fantasy romance with Vikings and pirate fae, then this is the book for you! Such an underrated read that I wish more people knew about. This was so captivating from the beginning! You've got enemies to lovers, forbidden romance, a morally grey MMC who will go to the ends of the earth for his FMC. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series!

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธI didnโ€™t think it would be possible for me to love anything as much as Broken Kingdoms โ€ฆ but damn if I havenโ€™t fallen head over heels in love with The Ever King. Erik Bloodsinger has stolen every last scrap of my black heart, and left me a wonton, simpering wreck. ๐Ÿ–ค

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ This book is spinoff of Broken Kingdoms, and the first in an epic new Fae pirate series. It takes you on wild ride, and delivers you a proper enemies-to-lovers experience.
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธErik & Livia are the children of sworn enemies. After the boy king Erik is captured following his failed attack on Liviaโ€™s people, theyโ€™re inexplicably drawn to each other. Erik is sent back to his kingdom, The Ever, and they grow up in opposing realms. When Erik has the chance to enact revenge on Liviaโ€™s father, he strikes his blow by spiriting Livia away into his world.
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธThereโ€™s action, adventure, political intrigue, and a bit of world buildingโ€ฆ But the magic here is the dynamic between Erik and Livia.
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธErik is a mouthwatering, morally-grey villain, who unapologetically commits many an irredeemable act, while being motivated by the desire to protect his realm. LJ Andrewโ€™s execution of this multifaceted, complex villain with a heart of goldโ€ฆ is nothing short of genius.
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธLivia is a truly endearing heroine. Sheโ€™s a princess who cowers to no one, as sheโ€™s forced to live in the realm of her sworn enemy. She slowly starts to look beyond the prejudices instilled in her by her folk. And despite her detesting Erik for taking her, she canโ€™t help but begin to peel back his layers, and see boy she once knew.

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธLJ could straight-up teach a class on how to write realistic, amusing, truly engrossing dialogue. The effortless flow of witty banter is unmatched. Erik & Livia engage in a never ending battle of the wits- pushing and pulling, constantly challenging, bringing out the best and worst in each other. Their exchanges are breathtaking, provocative and utterly perfect.
๐ŸŒถ๏ธThe sexual tension is absolutely unparalleled. The constant state of them either wanting to kill each other, or rip each otherโ€™s clothes off was intoxicating, and I absolutely lived for it. This is a slow burn, people, but the eventual payoff is bountiful indeed. And we do get some teaser scenes peppered throughout to whet our appetites.
๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ This book left me absolutely breathless and desperate for moreโ€ฆ and the kind of cliffhanger that you cherish, because it gives you something to look forward to. I (im)patiently await the rerelease of The Ever Queenโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™m not the broken hero you wish me to be. Iโ€™m the one who slits the heroโ€™s throat.โ€

To say that I LOVED this book is not enough. This book scratched an itch I didnโ€™t know was there and Iโ€™ll be chasing this high for a LONG time.
There was magic in every page. Whether a character using their powers, or describing the Ever, or a part of the ship. Everything was magical!
*Note that this book is separate from The Broken Kingdoms series, but the events from those books and the consequences flow into this book. I have not read the Broken Kingdoms series, but I definitely plan to now!

We are introduced to Erik, a heartless, brutal pirate fae lord who needs to appear strong to earn his peopleโ€™s favour. But events from his past cause him constant physical pain. His realm seems to be dying and he is powerless to stop the disease from spreading. Even though Erik is Brutal, you can tell he really cares about his people, and he is willing to do anything to heal the Ever.

I loved the cast of characters in this book. It feels like they have their own minds and lives, that donโ€™t just exist to serve the plot. Even the most minor of characters has their own ambitions and motives.

It has been so long since I read a book where every sentence carries so much weight, and just grips me. And does not let go! I rarely annotate my books, but the amount of passages I highlighted and underlined were innumerable.

Throughout this book, Livia shows signs of restlessness and anxiety. She was very relatable in those moments, and I think anyone who has experienced anxiety would say the same. I liked how Erik calmed her just by being present and reminding her of who she was, despite being a vicious, cold hearted killer. He shows a softer side of himself in those moments that was just so tender. And his soft words gave her comfort!

I loved how the author does such a good job painting a vivid picture of how vicious Bloodsinger is, but also allows us to see how he came to be that way. Itโ€™s tragic and gut wrenching. And I sobbed.
Erik is also shown to have a lot of character growth in this book, which shows more of his tender side. But I hope we donโ€™t loos his ruthlessness entirely in the second book!

I am DEEPLY obsessed with this book, specifically Erik Bloodsinger. ๐Ÿฅต This man is dark and morally grey, but his so poetic for this woman. The way he makes up titles to cheer her up was melting me.

Livia is the daughter of strong fae warriors and royalty and I resonated with her character so much. Sheโ€™s strong in subtle ways and deals with anxiety and nightmares. Fun fact, I have vivid nighmares often and her character made me feel seen. I love how she grows into her magic and becomes stronger and she and Erik bond and start to trust one another.

As for Erik, all I can say is the man could spit on me and I would say thank you. Top tier book boyfriend. I would do anything for this man. This man is dark so definitely check trigger warnings. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect when thinking of pirate fae, but two book clubs picked this book, so I thought it deserved a chance, and I ended up loving it and immediately starting The Ever Queen (because THAT ENDING?!?!).

I loved the world and the description of the Ever Kingdom! I also love Erik (just in general/the more we learn about his background) and what Livia grapples with as she learns some truths that contradict everything she believes and has been told.

While this book can definitely be read separately from The Broken Kingdoms series, there were a few instances were I felt something might have been more clear if I did have that background knowledge from their parentsโ€™ stories. Also, some describe it as enemies to lovers, but I think itโ€™s a little more like annoyance/frustration to lovers in my opinion.

Finally, I loved getting the background story for Sewell as the bonus content! Heโ€™s such a beloved side character in the main series, it was great to have some more bits and pieces about him filled in!

4 stars! this was such a great first book in a fantasy series! i was hooked basically from the first chapter and the setting of this book was so unique and i could picture it very vividly as i was reading which made the reading experience even better!

This book reminded me of so many other romantasy books Iโ€™ve read. On one hand, I loved those books, so itโ€™s not necessarily a bad thing. But I do also want something that feels new. For the most part, the world building did feel original and unique. It was probably just me, but I did struggle to understand some of the history and magic of this world.

This is an enemies to lovers where the stakes feel high. I drew similarities between the two MCs, and MCs from other series, most notably The Plated Prisoner series. I did enjoy both Livia and Erikโ€™s POVs, and Iโ€™m excited to see where this series goes.

I was surprised where this ended. I guess thereโ€™s a lot of bonus content at the end, so I wasnโ€™t expecting the actual story to end with over 10% left. It made the cliffhanger ending feel even more abrupt, since I thought I still had 40 minutes to go. Iโ€™m excited for book 2 now!

โ€œHello love.โ€

The Ever King is one of my favorite books, and Iโ€™m so excited it is being re-released with a new look and bonus material! This dark romantasy has everything I love: fae, pirates, sirens, Vikings, found family, unique magic system, incredible world building, and fast pacing with lots of action. LJ Andrews writes the most swoon-worthy MMCs and strong FMCs who become more than what โ€œnormal societyโ€ dictates they should be. The main and supporting characters are all easy to connect with and adore. The banter with Liviaโ€™s friends and family is so much fun, and you can tell they love and protect one another fiercely. For anyone wanting to know more about the parents in this book, check out The Broken Kingdoms series which takes place before the events in The Ever King. The anxiety rep with Livia and how her family (and Erik) help her manage it is beautifully written. This is coming from a reader with anxiety who felt very seen in those parts of the book. Erik Bloodsinger is a deliciously ruthless villain who is completely obsessed with Livia. Heโ€™s also very creative with his jewelry requests (IYKYK). And finally, THE BONUS MATERIAL! It added so much to background of a few characters, including Erik. It also may have broke my heart a bit.

Overall, โ™พ๏ธ/5 โญ๏ธ!

Huge thank you Berkley/Ace for sending me this e-ARC ๐Ÿ–ค

๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ–ค The Ever King ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ–ค
2025 Trad pub eARC review

Book 1 of The Ever King

Who doesn't love a little surf & turf? ๐Ÿ˜†

(I apologize in advance for any atrocious nautical word plays and unfunny puns I include.)

โ“QOTD: If you could pick 1 book/series to be adapted to screen that isn't in the works, which would it be? Would you want it to be live action, or animated?

โ—AOTD: The Ever Seas and live action. ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’€ If you've previously read The Ever King, the new trad edition has bonus chapters that you do not want to miss! They both broke my heart and healed it. ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ–ค

The Ever King walks a delicate plank between fantasy and romance, giving us what is, to me, the perfect blend of the two genres. It's beautiful. It's violent. It's heart-wrenching and heartwarming. All the freaking feels, right here in one book. With heart stopping action, unique magic, Pirates x Vikings, political intrigue, a beautifully tortured love story, and a bit of well done spice - I suggest you batten down the hatches and pick this book up today!

๐Ÿ’ญ You know how sometimes you reread a book and your opinion of said book is vastly different than the first reading? I'm happy to say my opinion didn't really change - but my love did grow even stronger. ๐Ÿ–ค Or since it's a book set on the sea, maybe it's better to say deeper. Deeper than the Mariana Trench. ๐Ÿ˜†

Do you like epic, dark, fantasy with romance and some well done spice? If so, you need to read this! Or if you're a fantasy reader wanting to try a fantasy romance, or a romance reader wanting to try a fantasy, here's a great book to start with. It is spicy, but that's not the focus of the story. ๐Ÿง—๐ŸผIt does end on quite the cliffhanger, but book 2 (The Ever Queen) is available.

I love that LJ gives us a MMC, Erik, who strengthens his our FMC, Livia, both mentally and physically. He ensures she knows she has agency, even during the period she's his captive (aside from letting her go home lol). He doesn't let anyone disrespect her, but always gives her room m and support in speaking and standing for herself. By always giving her his unwaivering support and positive reinforcement, she gains her "sea legs" and grows stronger for it. When he has bone jewelry made for using the bones of people who hurt her - I knew Erik had my whole heart.

LJ handles mental health (anxiety specifically) with authenticity, grace, and respect. As some with anxiety, I feel seen and heard by her representation of it. This book is an excellent example of the way handle mental health rep in books should be handled, in my opinion. Realistic without sugar coating it nor villainizing it, while showing healthy coping tips and ways in which someone could help a loved one better cope.

๐Ÿ“– The Ever Seas follows the children of the adults in LJ's other series, Broken Kingdoms. You do not need to read BK prior to reading this book/series as it's interconnected but fully stands alone.

"They stole his crown, so he stole their daughter..."
This book puts readers in the middle of the chasm between the earth fae (think Vikings) and the sea fae (think pirates) who've been at war for decades. Or were, until the chasm (portal) between their worlds closed cut off the ability for anyone to cross. When Livia accidentally and unknowingly opens the chasm, Erik, King of The Ever Seas, is alerted immediately and begins to enact his devious plan of revenge on the earth fae.
"She's innocent. He's vicious. But he will take back what he lost, no matter the price."

With high stakes, mysteries, secrets, action, found family, and a love story, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Excellent worldbuilding rich with lore. I went into this area deeply in my previous review of The Ever King, so I'll keep it succinct here.

โœ๐Ÿผ Lush land and seascapes uniquely imagined and richly described, this book is a joy to read and imagine. Written with clear, accessible language and word choices that feel intentional and meaningful. Dialogue feels natural to read and befitting the characters and story.

โณWell paced, full steam ahead the plot is moved forward with action, character development, and dialogue. Mysteries, secrets, and twists that are well executed and interesting.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ These characters have my whole heart (except the ones I love to hate lol). Rich in personality, dimension, and nuance. I love that LJ gives readers a cast with diversity and inclusivity, without it feeling forced. She also shows us characters with faults and difficulties that are true to real life.

๐Ÿ’ž We first meet Erik and Livia when they're young kids on opposite sides of the war. We spend a small bit of time watching them interact and it's beautifully bittersweet. Then we see them again as adults. I love their re-meet and I love that LJ shows them as enemies, true enemies, for awhile. Their bickering banter during this period is my favorite, with their cannons locked and loaded at all times. Watching their relationship grow and evolve as truths and secrets are revealed is as tumultuous as it is exciting.

๐ŸŒถ๏ธ I'm a take it or leave it person with spice, and I need to fit the story and characters, be placed/timed well, and at least semi-realistic. I'm pleased to say the spicy scenes fit my criteria. There are only a couple or so, and they're well done. The biggest thing for me is, I don't want the spice to be the plot or overtake the plot. It does not so either in this book (or the series). The tension is palpable between these two, and I love it.

โš ๏ธ Please check authors site for TW/CW.

Thank you to @netgalley @berkleypublishing and @ljandrews for the opportunity to read this eARC. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

๐Ÿ“What is it about?
Erik Bloodsinger had his crown stolen by Valen Ferus, and he is out for revenge. What better way then to take his enemyโ€™s daughter! Livia is taken to the cruel world of The Ever Sea with the ruthless pirate as her captor, and an entire realm that wants revenge against her people.

๐Ÿ’ญMy Thoughts?
Itโ€™s no secret that I am a die hard LJ Andrews fan. As this was the first book I read after The Broken Kingdoms, I was worried I wouldnโ€™t love it as much as the OG series. I was completely wrong! The story is full of creative world building and magic systems combined to give the reader an action-filled, captivating plot. Erik is a complicated, morally grey MMC who is only softened by his songbird, and his backstory and trauma add depth to his character. Livia is every bit the Viking daughter you would expect of Valen and Elise Ferus and even though she suffers from panic attacks/anxiety, she is a strong and Fierce FMC. I love the inclusion of the mental health rep in this story.

LJ Andrews excels at creating relatable, complex characters you canโ€™t help but love, and the MCs are as interesting and compelling as the supporting characters. With a cast including a lovable kitchen steward, Sewell, who only speaks in riddles and steals your heart, a saucy, female pirate, Celene, a gifted spy master, Gavyn, and a ship full of raucous pirates, the found family trope is strong. (And the bonus section tells Sewellโ€™s backstory).

If you love creative world building, morally grey MCs, found family that becomes your own and tension building banter that fuels a delicious slow-burn, spicy romantasy then this is a must add to your TBR. The new gorgeous hardcover with bonus material is an excellent edition for your shelves!

โ€œHate me, curse me, I cared little, so long as I was the first thought of her day and the last of her night.โ€

LJ Andrews is my favorite author and this is my favorite book of 2025! Iโ€™m obsessed! Kase Eriksson will forever be my #1 book boyfriend but Erik Bloodsinger is a very close second. They are both morally gray characters that do whatever it takes to keep their loved ones safe. Erik had to show his strength to the world and was willing to kill when needed, but he was loyal to the people he cared about. He made Livia his queen even though it's never been done before. His people see it as a weakness for a woman to be on the throne.

Livia sees the good and the bad in Erik. She has been in love with him since she was a girl. Sheโ€™s always been called to him and the sea. She is a fierce and loyal but also soft and feminine. She stands up for Erik and helps rebuild his land. I loved watching her grow throughout the book.

There were so many plot twists and it ended on a cliffhanger! I immediately dove into the next book, The Ever Queen.

LJ Andrews is a Queen at world building. The way she created the Broken Kingdoms and now the Ever Seas is just mind blowing. I will read whatever she writes! Thank you Netgalley and Berkley Publishing for the ARC!

I enjoyed the pirate vibes of the Ever Kingโ€™s ship and crew. The world-building was teased out as I needed it, creating feminist fae kingdoms with Viking vibes and earth powers to contrast with the patriarchal oppressive islands full of various water and song magics.

Livia and Erikโ€™s complex relationship made for a tense story and romance. Erik was vicious and dark, and though his backstory helped explain his behavior, Iโ€™m left with mixed feelings. Despite the kidnapping and his early threats, Erik protected Livia fiercely and treasured herโ€”but those threats were truly horrific and she forgave it all easily. As she journeyed through the Ever, Livia showed honest compassion to the people and gained confidence in her abilities. I hope her character develops more in the rest of the books.

Celine and Sewell balanced the tension by offering gentleness and care to Livia from the start, their bonds deepening slowly as the story progressed.

Some of the reveals could be predicted by carefully laid clues and some were interesting surprises. This story ended on a cliffhanger, sparking curiosity about what happens next, but Iโ€™m on the fence due to some cringey feelings about the romance.

Thanks to NetGalley and Ace Books for the ARC.

You know you're reading a magnificent book when you start reading your book during the middle of the day, and all of a sudden, it's dark outside. Like you feel this pull to a book and don't want to stop reading cause the story steals your breath away.

I fell in love with LJ Andrews' writing when I read the first book from the Broken Kingdoms series, Curse of Shadows and Thorns. You just instantly feel yourself pulled into the story and feel this immense love for the characters who will have a special place into your heart. Every single time, LJ keeps you on your toes with all those brilliant twists, turns, and cliffhangers. LJ is the queen of the trope, from enemies to lovers. The angst, the tension, and the romance between the characters are to die for. Her writing is exquisite. So beautifully penned.

The Ever King was such a thrilling, suspenseful page-turner. I am still astonished by all those shocking secrets being revealed at the end of this spellbinding, adventurous story.

If you are a fan of pirates, vikings, and fae, then this gem is definitely for you!

The Ever King is the first book in L.J. Andrewsโ€™s The Ever Seas Series. This book is actually a rerelease, and I regret not picking up this book sooner. After enjoying Broken Souls and Bones earlier this year, I just knew I would love The Ever King. If youโ€™re a longtime fan of Paranormal Romance like me, this book will appeal to you. Iโ€™m firmly in my Fantasy Romance/Romantasy Era, and Iโ€™m not leaving anytime soon.

One thing I enjoy is how an author can hook me right away, and L.J. Andrews does just that by starting her book with a bang. The immersive world, compelling characters, and vivid setting captured my attention. I was especially pleased that the story is told in Dual POV, letting me experience both the FMCโ€™s and MMCโ€™s POVs. The MMC stands out as a morally grey character, my favorite kind, because heโ€™s willing to burn the world for the FMC, even though he shouldnโ€™t have feelings for her because sheโ€™s his enemyโ€™s daughter.

I loved both characters in this book for their qualities. Livia is a strong, fierce heroine who wonโ€™t take any crap from anyone, not even Erik Bloodsinger. Erik is an antihero with a story that will be heartbreaking to some readers. It was for me. No wonder he feels like a monster, given how he was raised and treated. Thankfully, Livia is there after he kidnaps her to remind him heโ€™s her monster and sheโ€™ll take him as he is. Be prepared for tension and banter in the first half. Although the romance between them develops slowly, the pacing allows their connection and emotions to build, making each moment more rewarding. This slow-burn romance is worth it as their relationship unfolds layer by layer, especially once they realize whatโ€™s happening between them.

That said, the second half did slow down before picking up again at the end. There was a lot to digest and many characters to keep up with. I may have figured out the antagonist early, but it was still an enjoyable read, and I give this book four stars.

L.J. Andrews excels at worldbuilding and making readers fall for her characters, even the secondary ones. Iโ€™m eager to read the next in the series, especially after that shocking cliffhanger. Iโ€™m glad I was introduced to L.J. Andrewsโ€™ books earlier this year, thanks to Berkley/Ace, because now I need to read her whole backlist, especially since The Ever King is a spin-off of her Broken Kingdoms series.

Single/Dual POV: Dual POV.

Cliffhanger: Yes

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are looking for a Dark Fantasy Romance book to read this year, then check out The Ever King. It also has some amazing tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Captive Romance, Forced Proximity, Slow Burn, and a morally grey hero that will be hard to forget.

I went into The Ever King expecting the sweeping, swoony fantasy romance Iโ€™ve seen hyped all over TikTok, and while it had some standout elements like pirate-inspired fae, kingdoms at war across land and sea, and a broody cursed king, it didnโ€™t fully come together for me.

The romance leans heavily into familiar tropes: fated mates, instant attraction, enemies-to-lovers with a vengeance edge. If you're into the โ€œI hate you, but also I want you (and Iโ€™ll destroy the world for you)โ€ dynamic, this will likely hit the mark. But for me, it felt more like a checklist than something organically built.

The worldbuilding had promise with underwater kingdoms, magical chains, and court politics, but the emotional development struggled to keep pace. Erik's choices, especially around deception, seemed to exist more for the sake of plot twists than logical character motivation. And frankly, some of his behavior gave me pause. There were moments where he would grab her hair and shove her away that crossed a line from morally gray into uncomfortable territory, especially without narrative consequence.

That said, I did enjoy the pirate-fae aesthetic. Itโ€™s a fresh angle Iโ€™d love to see explored more deeply. And thereโ€™s definitely an audience for the dramatic, high-stakes romantic fantasy this book delivers.

If you love your fantasy romance full of tropes, drama, and sea-swept vengeance, The Ever King might work for you. It just didnโ€™t quite click for me.

This was my (inadvertent) second read of this book. I saw the beautiful cover, took a chance on it, and it was only when I started questioning why everything felt so familiar did I realize itโ€™s a book Iโ€™ve already read and loved, just with a new cover. Having said that, Iโ€™m super glad to have revisited this book because it made me realize how much I love this world, this story, and these characters.

Liv and Erikโ€™s story really begins in the past as the songbird and the serpent. The days of being children on opposing sides of a war are long overโ€ฆthat is, until the barrier between worlds is broken. Both adults now, Erik is out for vengeance and his target is Liv, the enemyโ€™s daughter. What begins as a quest for revenge turns complicated as Liv and Erik start developing feelings for one another and by the end, everything is muddled including what sides theyโ€™re each one and who exactly is the enemy.

Perfect for fans of pirates, Vikings, and fae, this book truly does have something for everyone. Itโ€™s exciting from the very beginning and that excitement and tension doesnโ€™t abate until the very end. The ending is an abrupt one, which will leave readers clamoring for the next book. I read and loved the second book as well and I canโ€™t wait to revisit it very soon. Pick this one up if you enjoy:

โžธ Explorations of trauma and associated mental health conditions (Livia suffers from PTSD and anxiety)
โžธ Enemies-to-lovers
โžธ Vikings, pirates, fae
โžธ Morally grey hero
โžธ Found family with amazing supporting characters
โžธ(plus so much more. just do yourself a favor and read it.)

This is such an amazing book!!!! This book is the start of a new series but if you have read LJs other series The Broken Kingdoms, then you will have a slight backstory to the couple in this book. However, you do not need to read the other series to enjoy this book!!

I absolutely loved how feral Erik was for Livy and how he was instantly drawn to her. The book was absolutely SWOON-WORTHY!!! If a man isn't willing to make you a necklace from the bones of your enemies... Then what is he even doing?? Highly recommend this book!!
