Debbie Macomber is someone I always pick up just because she gives me all the fills her books make me laugh. Smile and cry completely worth it. If you haven’t read this, please do.

REVIEW: Hasty Wedding by Debbie Macomber

I have read many of Debbie Macomber's books and enjoyed them. Since I had not read Hasty Wedding before, I was excited to see it released as an audiobook. Although it is part of a series, I read it as a standalone and didn't feel I missed anything.

I thought it was a fun idea for Hasty Wedding to have a quick marriage in Vegas. Reed was the best man at his friend's wedding; Clare was the maid of honor for her friend who was marrying Reed's friend. They were preparing for the wedding, leading to a lot of time together. I liked the diversity representation in this book and the challenge they faced with racism. It is unfortunately still very current even with this book being written in 1993

There were a lot of things that didn't work for me in Hasty Wedding. I hated that Reed shut out Clare and had no say. They could have avoided so many issues if they had just talked. There were lots of toxic relationship hints as well. I also didn't like that they thought a baby might fix their marriage. It just seems very dated. There was also A LOT of back and forth between getting a divorce and having these sweet, intimate physical moments.

Unfortunately, Hasty was just not for me overall. Too many elements showed this book's age, and both characters made questionable decisions.

I was kind of surprised to realize this book was written in the 90s since a lot of it seemed prevalent still. Unfortunately, racism is still very rampant, and an interracial marriage such as this one probably would still be frowned upon in certain areas.
The FMC is a white woman and the MMC a Native American, and they get married on a whim on a night in Vegas, a few hours after their friends do. He has loved her for a while, but she’s only just realizing that she wasn’t loved the way she should be in her current relationship, and that Reed gives her what she needs.
Only, after the wedding, he starts distancing himself from her and acting really standoffish. This annoyed me, because he was making a decision for her. He wasn’t acting standoffish because he felt nothing for her, but rather because he loved her so much and didn’t want to see her go through the racial hatred his parents did when they were in a similar predicament. Meanwhile, Clare doesn’t care because she does love him and doesn’t care what people think. He seemed he would only change his mind if a baby was involved.
This was kind of old school thinking to me, but then again this book is older than me. He did love her though, and I loved that Clare powered through, rather than giving up and stuck around until he realized that she was never going to agree to a divorce when neither of them really wanted that.

This was a quick and enjoyable romance. I listened to this one on audio and I think that’s why I liked it as much as I did. The storyline felt repetitive at times, but otherwise I really enjoyed it. I liked the way discrimination in the book was handled and I enjoyed seeing how two characters from different backgrounds came together. Overall I had a good time with this one.

This is a quick fictional read. The main characters Claire and Reed spontaneously get married in Las Vegas after serving as the maid of honor and best man for their friends. Right from the “I dos” there were doubts about whether this was the right decision. Claire just wanted to be married, Reed had loved her from afar since they were younger. Once they head home, they have to face friends and family and regrets.
Hasty Wedding is a light and easy love story.
