Old Soul, New Creation by Jake Weidmann was an absolutely breathtaking and intriguing book full of the author's story, musings, and fine art. I have heard of the author and artist years ago on Instagram, and remember following along parts of the process he shared on Instagram of these projects mentioned in the book specifically. Now, after reading, I learned even more of the backstory and meaning of them, which simply adds to my awe in his creative direction and perseverance in making these works come to life. Jake Wedmann is a Master Penman (one of only 9 in the world) and fine artist who follows artistic traditions of time gone by to create incredible works, while rooted in his faith in God who gives him this creative gift. In the book he also encouages readers to take up any art or creative endeavour and create something, because anything you create is a testimony to how God created you in His image. It's a message I have heard and read many times, but this felt different because of the skill and dedication and faith in Wedmann's work - you'll have to read it to understand, but how he explains his processes through different pieces, and even his early experiences in creating in high school and as an adult searching for commission and to create for his gift - it was inspiring. I enoyed reading the backstory of ten specific creations of his, alongside his musing of creating something for others and his joy, while also persevering to build a business and support a family in his art. The illustrations and calligraphy included in the book is beautiful and only adds to the story as we can see while reading exactly what work he is speaking of. It makes it come to life. It is harder to see at times on the kindle, so I may end up purchasing a copy of the book. It was also interesting to learn in his creative processes, that he just had an idea and ran with it - he started out perfecting calligraphy and doing jobs with letters and invitiations and the like, and learned woodworking, engraving, jewelry, scultping, painting, and drawing. I couldn't believe that with that kind of talent he is self taught - but then again, it is a gift from God, and he certainly understands this and does not take it lightly. My favorite creation mentioned in the book is probably the swan cradle, with the mechanism built in to sway and rock each baby. What a beautiful heriloom. It's just incredible, his writing and photos of his creations had me in awe, that this level of detail and art is something humanly possible. This book is beautiful, and I encourage anyone who likes stories about art, perseverance, origin stories of great businesses, faith, and the like, to read it.

Old Soul, New Creation is a stunning book. Whether you are interested in Jake Weidman’s story (and it is a fascinating one) or you are just captivated by the artwork, you will enjoy this gorgeous book. Jake is a Master Penman and as you flip through the pages, you will be transfixed by the measure of talent graced to this artist. He is open and humble as he tells his story and shares how God called (more like ushered) him into this vocation. Images will show you both Jake at work and some of his final creations (wait until you read about his wife’s engagement ring!). They are no less than breathtaking. The intricacies, attention to detail, and ability to capture movement and essence is truly a special gift. I originally thought maybe there would be a lot of cool drawings, but really, his talents are not limited to the pen only. There are many mediums in which Jake showcases his talent and ability to create. It really is a movement of expression, a state of being, and a pleasure to experience even a small sampling of his creativity. You will be inspired, blessed, and perhaps challenged as you read this book. Let the Spirit move, let the Lord speak, and let yourself just be in His awesome presence.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

Impressions: This was a surprising book. I was thinking this would be a book of artwork and it was, but not the visual form that you might be thinking. The beauty I found in this book was God's hand in Jake Weidmann’s life. I appreciated Weidmann’s experiences and honesty in sharing his story. He is a master of his craft, as seen in the smallest detail of his work. He genuinely shares the same detail here in his story as an artist, husband, and father. His faithfulness to God, his family, and his craft was beautifully shared in this book, along with pictures and snapshots of his artwork.

Thank you, NetGalley and publisher, for the opportunity to review this book!

This book is hard to describe. It’s something like an artist’s origin story. The artwork featured is truly beautiful. The book also weaves in numerous inspirational religious messages. I’m certain the artwork would shine best in a hard copy. It looked lovely on my Kindle, but I’m convinced a printed version would be far superior.
