Estranged siblings reunited after their father’s “accidental” death, a will reading that stirs the pot and so many secrets-what more can you ask for in a murder mystery!

This was my first read from this author and I enjoyed it. I thought the story premise was creative and captivating. Gertie Glass was a strong FMC to follow all while hating her terrible siblings. I enjoyed the amateur sleuthing, secrets and dynamics between all the characters. I found the story line was more of a slow burn murder mystery than an edge of your seat thriller. I think some of the business details of Mr. Glass lost my attention at times. I loved the little interludes with either past POV, email or text exchanges and more. I love when an author adds more dimension to their stories and Stacie Grey did just that. I loved Mrs. Phans’ character. It would have been fun to have a chapter or bonus chapter from her POV. Overall, this was an enjoyable read that kept me wanting to know if my predictions of what took place in the Glass house were correct.

Add this one to your TBR if you enjoy: dysfunctional families, slow burn mysteries, strong FMC and secrets galore!

3.5 stars. This book was a good who done it... it kept you interested and wanting to know more. It was a little slow in places and I lost interest a little. It did pick up, and overall it was a good story, if a little predictable.
It follows Gertie who has been estranged from her father since she was three. He passes unexpectedly and she is called to attend his will reading, here she meets her step siblings, who are all incredibly unhappy that she is there. As it turns out Gertie has been left the property in the will, which the siblings are distraught over. She finds out her father's death was very suspicious and after receiving an unexpected letter from him she decides to investigate his suspicious death herself.
If you like midsummer murders or murder she wrote, you will enjoy this book. It was written very well and the characters were all well developed, not very likable but that's the point in a book like this. It you like a good murder mystery with several suspects, I definitely recommend this book. Overall I enjoyed it.

Gertie receives a letter from her estranged father after he has died. The story unravels to follow the mystery of his death, his will and her loathsome siblings.

The story gives similar vibes to the inheritance games, molly the maid and a good girls guide to murder (in my opinion). The chapters are varied in length and broken up by various forms of mixed media that add to the story. Although this book has some thriller elements, I felt it read more like a mystery.

This was a quick read with a story line that kept you guessing. I generally found the book entertaining, but I found it slightly predictable and boring in parts. I feel like this book would be perfect for people new to the thriller/ mystery genre who are looking for a quick read.

DNF @ 33% - The premise for She Didn’t Stand a Chance interested me because I love whodunit mysteries with dysfunctional families and rich people behaving badly. Unfortunately this is moving too slowly for me and I don’t feel like anything is happening anytime soon so I’m going to set it aside for now.

Now She Didn’t Stand a Chance is a gripping domestic thriller that dives straight into the dark corners of trust, obsession, and betrayal. Stacie Grey wastes no time pulling the reader into a web of secrets where every character feels like they’re hiding something.

What I liked most is the sharp, punchy writing style—it keeps the tension high and makes the pages fly by. The twists don’t just shock for the sake of shock; they unravel naturally, making you question every relationship as the story unfolds. By the end, I was second-guessing everyone and couldn’t put it down.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers that keep you up way past bedtime, this one delivers.

This book was just average for me. It entertained me enough to not DNF, but didnt grasp me enough to devour it in one setting. I kept putting it down to read something else. It was a bit lackluster but I still wanted to know how it ended. Can guarantee I forget about it tomorrow.

I had to DNF this one unfortunately. There were way too many characters and dynamics to keep track of and I just felt so lost throughout the story, I couldn’t enjoy the reading experience

I hadn’t read a family thriller in a while so I was excited to dive into this book. I loved the authors writing and how I couldn’t guess what would happen next. The multiple POVs made the pace really quick. I can’t forget to mention that I loved the main character Gertie.

Unfortunately, this one did not work for me. I felt like the female main character was a little insufferable, and so that made it harder for me to connect with the story and follow what was happening. I think this dislike for the book was definitely a me problem.

I wasn’t sure about this book as I hadn’t read anything by this author, but the story and characters grabbed me and I couldn’t read fast enough. Gertrude “Gertie” Glass, a strong female character, was used to taking care of herself after her mother and father divorced. She had not been to his home since she was three years old, but now she is standing at his front door, but he is dead. The police have not yet rendered a decision on the cause of his death, but the family believes he died from a fall. She had been requested to attend the reading of his will and had earlier received a note from him mentioning her IOU. She had once contacted him to help her stepfather, and he did so. Now she faces his four children and girlfriend; Maryann, the oldest daughter who seems to have control of the situation, divorced son Brian, son Neil who is married to his husband Nestor and his youngest daughter, Jennifer. The reading of his will, will begin the families semi-friendly attack on Gertie, but she has no intention of caving to their demands…she wants justice for a father she never knew. She has some assistance from her father’s attorney and the manager of the home, Mrs. Phan who still remembers Gertie as a three-year-old. As she begins to investigate, surely, she doesn’t have to worry about her own safety? A rush as Gertie is not going to stop until she learns why her father was killed and by who! SHE DIDN’T STAND A CHANCE by Stacie Grey
ARC Review OUT NOW
368 Pgs - Poisoned Pen Press
Thriller/Mystery

Ever been the unwanted guest at a family gathering? Gertie walks into her late father’s house, surrounded by people who barely remember her and wish she’d stayed away. She hasn’t been in this house since she was in diapers, and she’s only here now for the reading of the will. She’s the outsider, the only child from a different mother, the only one who didn’t have everything handed to her, and the only one who thinks their father’s 'accidental' death wasn’t so accidental. I felt like I was watching her get thrown into a tank of hungry sharks.

The cast is absolutely untrustworthy and all the more entertaining. Gertie and Mrs. Phan are the real gems. This was entertaining, twisty, and kept me hooked start to finish. I felt like a fly on the wall, watching family secrets bubble up and waiting to see who would be next to have an ‘oops’ moment.

If you’re into dysfunctional families, suspicious deaths, and sharp humor, this is one to add to your list.

I gave “She Didn’t Stand a Chance” a solid 4 stars, and I’d happily pick up another of Stacie Grey’s thrillers.

Thanks to Stacie Grey and Poisoned Pen Press for the gifted ARC through NetGalley. All opinions here are mine.

I just finished She Didn’t Stand a Chance, and while it wasn’t perfect, it was an entertaining “popcorn thriller” that kept me turning the pages. The overall mystery and whodunnit angle worked well, and I especially liked the symbolism of the “glass house.” That image, that every family has its secrets, no matter how perfect things look from the outside, gave the story some extra depth.

The main character’s situation added plenty of drama too. She inherited a large sum of money from her dead millionaire father, which immediately put her at odds with her siblings, who had always treated her like an outcast because they saw her mother as a disgrace. That messy family tension carried the story and made the betrayals and suspicions all the more believable.

The mystery itself leaned a little predictable and messy at times, but I still enjoyed it for what it was: a quick, entertaining thriller full of family secrets, drama, and intrigue.

OMG, what a wild ride! And the ending…👩🏾‍🍳💋!

This book is perfect for readers who crave twisty, fast-paced, high-stakes drama with intense suspense and a setting so vivid it feels like a character. If I’d had the time, I would have devoured this book in one sitting. Stacie’s writing is sharp and immersive, making every scene simmer with tension. From the first page to the last, I was hooked—equally as determined to unravel the mystery and find the killer as Gertie was.

Gertie is summoned to her father's house after he passes away in possibly suspicious circumstances. She hasn't seen her step siblings since she was a toddler, and it isn't a warm welcome. After the reading of the will, the dynamic gets worse, and Gertie starts to wonder if she'll make it out of the Glass House alive.

Gertie, the black sheep of her family, returns to her old home when her father’s will is read. Gertie gets the better end of the deal, from her not so nice siblings, and a string of jealously pursues. Gertie feels like something is off with her siblings, with the house, something that has to do with her father’s death.

Thank you to NetGalley, Stacie Grey, and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC. A classic whodunit set in a big old house—such a fun setting! I really enjoyed the story and all its twists and turns.

When Gertie is called to her father Arnold Glass' home after his passing, she's confronted by her less-than-welcoming half-siblings and the eerie suspicion that Arnold didn't just die - he was murdered. When the will is read and it appears Gertie has inherited a large stake in the Glass company and the entirety of the Glass home, more and more bodies start to drop.

SHE DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE is my first read by Stacie Grey and, while it wasn't a favorite, I don't see this being the last.

I really loved the dynamic between Gertie and her half siblings - their true awfulness made it incredibly easy to root for Gertie (lol) and added a really nice drama and distrust to the story.

The heat was pouring off the page and I commend Grey for crafting such a sweaty and uncomfortable atmosphere.

Overall, I wasn't fully roped in to the mystery and it left me desiring a bit more by the end.

Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the early copy for review!

Thank you @NetGalley and @PoisonedPenPress for the ARC copy of She Didn’t Stand A Chance.

This was my first book by Stacie Grey, so I was excited to receive this ARC as I am always looking for new authors to read.

This book was like a new age version of Clue in my opinion; a whodunnit. Gertie Glass hasn’t been included in her father Arnold’s side of the family most of her life, but after her father passes away, she and all of her half-siblings are called to their father’s house for the reading of the will which shocks them all. She finds out very quickly she is not welcome there by Arnold’s other children and they make that very clear. While there, Gertie makes it her mission to find answers surrounding her father’s death, which only frustrates the siblings even more. This book had me guessing the entire time. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. I loved how Grey included the staff members in this family drama/mystery. I kept thinking we were days later only to realize it was the same day or the next day as so much happened in such a short time. I love how Grey gave good descriptions of the house and property, I could visualize it as if I was seeing it on a screen. The ending could have had a bit more shock factor to it and the set up was there, but overall I really enjoyed it.

I think this book would be a good read for someone who likes:
* Family Drama
* Murder Mystery
