I don't often finish a book as quickly as I did "She Didn't Stand A Chance" but this book was, for lack of better words, un-put-down-able.
The story focuses around Gertrude "Gertie" Glass, a fresh out of law school, brilliant woman. She returns to her estranged father's estate after his death, and soon she realizes his death wasn't an accident. Despite the lack of friendliness from her half-siblings, she finds trusted companions among the household staff. Putting her own safety at the back of her mind, she takes it upon herself to try and solve his murder, and the ones that shockingly soon follow. Hopefully before she becomes the next victim.
The story is just quick paced enough to keep you on your toes, but not so fast that it's rushed. I'm very excited to read more from this author in the future!

Thank you again Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this ARC!

I have already been reading She Left by Stacie Grey last year, and told myself to have an eye on her future releases. Which is why I was very delighted when being approved to read her newest book early.

And, I was really not dissappointed. The setting - a remote house in dry California filled with lies and family secrets - is surely a recipe that never fails to draw me in. A house Gertie does inherit. From a father who'd wanted nothing to do with her all her life. A father who might have been murdered, despite her half-siblings claiming it was an accidental death....

Buckle up for a wild ride and get the book once it does release! I promise you are not going to be disappointed!

Thank you to @netgalley and @poisonedpenpress for this advanced readers copy, due out August 12, 2025.

Daddy’s wealthy and dead, his adult children are spoiled and ungrateful, and along comes a younger daughter from a short marriage. It’s all the makings for a murder mystery. Who killed Arnold Glass?

I had this crime narrowed down to a few characters early on, but when the house manager entered the story, I started to waiver.

Arnold is almost 90 when he dies, leaving behind his 40-50 year old children from his first marriage. Self-righteous and greedy, there isn’t much likable about any of them. But Gertie, Arnold’s late 20 year old daughter, is a force to be reckoned with, and I enjoyed her storyline throughout.

Money is not always a good thing. Money and power can be a deadly mix!

I enjoyed this read and will look for more from this author!

Well by golly, this was a pretty damn fun little murder/mystery. I was worried it was going to be slow with the way it started, but I respect that the slowness served its purpose in building up what was coming. I will say, I did solve the “who dunit” part of the mystery but not the “why” but that didn’t deter me from enjoying the book. The way it all came together was orchestrated quite beautifully, actually. Gertrude was an undercover badass FMC, and I think I’d like to be friends with a gal like her in real life.

An ominous glass house, a surprise will reveal, estranged siblings — the setup of She Didn't Stand a Chance is so good. Unfortunately, it didn't hold my attention. The beginning felt like a lot of conversations without much action, and most of the characters came off one-dimensional. This ended up being a DNF for me.

I was completely hooked by this book! I felt the tension from the very first page, and I found myself completely invested in Gertie’s unsettling return to her family home. I experienced every bit of her isolation and unease as she navigated the hostility of her siblings and the shocking revelations surrounding her father’s death. I loved how the atmosphere felt almost claustrophobic—the setting was vivid, and I could practically feel the dry air closing in. I found myself questioning every character, second-guessing motivations, and unraveling the layers of secrets that made this book so addictive. I appreciated how the suspense built steadily, making every twist land with real impact. I finished the book feeling both thrilled and unnerved. The story stayed with me long after I turned the last page, and I admired how it blended family drama, mystery, and psychological tension so seamlessly.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller.

She Didn't Stand a Chance was definitely a storyline full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Gertie is summoned to the estate of her late, estranged father along with four half-siblings she had never met for the reading of his will. She never expected anything but not only did she receive a part of his estate, she received all sorts of threats; spoken, written and implied that make her few days in the desert ones she would rather forget! Join in this journey with Gertie and see if you can guess the ultimate "bad seed"!

Hot, tense, and suffocating—She Didn't Stand a Chance plunges readers into a deadly family reunion where blood ties mean nothing and betrayal lurks around every corner. When Gertie is unexpectedly called back to the family she barely knows for the reading of her estranged father's will, she has no idea the nightmare she's walking into. Instead of a bittersweet homecoming, she finds herself the target of resentment, jealousy, and something far more sinister. The inheritance she never asked for has made her an enemy in her own bloodline—and it may cost her life. As the deadly heat of Palm Springs presses down and accidents start to feel less accidental, Gertie realizes that escaping the family estate alive might be the only thing that matters. But the more she digs into the past, the more deadly secrets she unearths—and the closer the real killer gets.
What I like :-
1 Atmospheric and claustrophobic setting: The desert heat becomes its own character, amplifying the tension.
2 Toxic family dynamics: A chilling portrayal of sibling rivalry, old grudges, and greed.
3 Pacy and suspenseful: Sharp, brisk writing keeps you racing through the pages.
Overall, She Didn't Stand a Chance is a thrilling dive into a family soaked in secrets and betrayal. Stacie Grey crafts a story that feels like a slow, breathless suffocation—one that's impossible to walk away from until the final, shocking reveal.
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for giving me an advance copy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the perfect gripping family thriller with heat, secrets, and serious vibes!

“She Didn’t Stand a Chance” pulls you in right from the start. Gertie’s return to her childhood home is full of mystery, tension, and that perfect “something’s not right” energy. The setting in the dry California desert adds a whole mood—quiet, eerie, and beautifully unsettling. The author does an amazing job making you feel just as isolated and on edge as Gertie, and the slow unraveling of family secrets is totally addictive.

It’s one of those books that makes you want to keep reading just one more chapter. Twists, jealousy, and hidden motives all come together in a way that keeps you hooked without being over the top. Super entertaining and satisfying from start to finish.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author Stacie Grey for the eARC. This was a fun ride!

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ — She Didn't Stand a Chance by Stacie Grey

In the scorching heat of Palm Springs, secrets fester and jealousy simmers in this tense family thriller. Gertie, estranged from her siblings since early childhood, is summoned back to the family estate for the reading of her father's will. To her shock—and her siblings’ fury—she inherits a significant stake in the family business and their father's beloved home. But Gertie’s inheritance quickly becomes the least of her worries when a suspicious death, a near-fatal accident, and whispers of murder make it clear that someone in the house doesn’t want her there.

This is my second book by Stacie Grey, having read She Left last year (3⭐️), and some of the same issues carried over. While Gertie is a likable and resilient protagonist, the supporting characters—particularly her half-siblings—felt disappointingly one-dimensional. The clear division between “good” and “bad” characters missed the chance to explore more nuanced motivations or moral ambiguity. I would have loved more insight into why her siblings became so bitter and greedy, rather than being told they simply were.

The desert setting had so much potential for adding atmosphere and tension, and while it gave the book a distinctive backdrop, I wish it had been used more thematically. That said, the pacing kept me engaged (aside from a slight lull in the middle), and the payoff was both satisfying and chilling. I did peg the killer early on, which took some of the suspense out, and the Hayley subplot (refusing to provide an alibi out of sheer stubbornness?) really tested my suspension of disbelief.

Mrs. Phan was a standout character and added some much-needed warmth to a mostly cold cast. And while the title doesn’t really align with the plot, the premise—family secrets, a contested will, and a ticking clock as bodies fall—remains a compelling one.

📚 She Didn't Stand a Chance is out August 12th.

She Didn't Stand a Chance is a fun sprint of a mystery. Gertrude Glass shows up to her long-estranged father's house to hear the reading of his will and quickly finds herself tasked with solving his murder. All the while she is harangued and hampered by a pack of entitled, spiteful half-siblings that will make the reader's jaw clench. Gertie is a likable, self-reliant main character who is used to rising above hard knocks. The hits start early and come fast, making it hard to believe the whole story takes place over just a few days. Set in the baking desert, the inhospitable landscape is palpable, and is a great companion for her hostile family. Both create dangers readers won't see coming.

Wow! This book was intense! A whodunit mystery and family drama that blended seamlessly into a dark tale of secrets, murder, and greed. The suspense was utterly relentless with several pulse-pounding moments and claustrophobic situations. I felt like an animal caught in a trap for most of the book. I adored Gertie's character and empathized with the abuse she had to endure, but I am so happy that the author gave her some backbone. It's not often that I have such a deep hatred for characters, but this family of siblings were the worst kind of humans imaginable. They had me seething and gritting my teeth throughout the entire book. None of them were trustworthy, and they all had hidden motives. I had no idea who the guilty party was. The author provided what seemed like an endless list of possibilities that continually dwindled down to a select few and it was still somewhat of a shocker! I very happily can admit that I was hooked from start to finish. I would have liked one final chapter with a final FU from Gertie, but the absence of this didn't take away from my overall enjoyment. I loved it and definitely recommend!

This book? Intense. Stacie Grey delivers a raw, gripping story that pulls you in from the very first page and doesn’t let you go until the very last. She Didn’t Stand a Chance is a dark, thrilling ride full of twists, heart-pounding moments, and characters who are impossible to forget.

The plot is filled with tension, drama, and unexpected turns that keep you guessing and flipping the pages faster than you meant to. The stakes are high, and the emotional depth makes it more than just a suspenseful story—it’s an exploration of strength, survival, and what happens when everything goes wrong. The characters feel real and raw, and as much as I wanted to see them succeed, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of every decision they made.

This book has a way of making you feel everything: the fear, the urgency, and even the hope, all tangled up together. It’s a dark, thrilling, and utterly addictive read that’ll stay with you long after you’re done.

*She Didn't Stand a Chance* by Stacie Grey is a tense, slow-burn mystery steeped in family drama and desert heat. The atmosphere is thick with suspicion, making every page feel claustrophobic in the best way. Gertie is a compelling protagonist—thrust into a house full of bitter siblings and long-buried secrets, her growing paranoia feels justified as the danger creeps closer. Grey does a great job layering the suspense, with enough twists to keep you guessing. Some pacing lulls slightly in the middle, but the payoff is satisfying and chilling. A solid, character-driven mystery that simmers with emotional heat and just the right touch of menace.
