Get ready for one helluva ride when you pick this one up! The action gets started early on and doesn’t let up. I had to take a few breaks for my heart to slow so I could handle the suspense! There is some pretty gruesome violence here, but also some really tender and beautiful moments. The character development is top notch. The relationships between the four main characters and love between them propels the story forward in a convincing way. Highly recommend checking this book out.
Special thank you to NetGalley for the the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The HItchikers was enjoyable and suspenseful. I typically enjoy Chevy Stevens books and this was no different. I enjoyed the ending and thought it was well written

Whew! What a journey! This book had me hooked. Chevy Stevens has a way of making you feel like you're right there, in the story yourself, experiencing all the emotions. I felt like I was constantly on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next with Alice and the others. It was one thing after another - boom, boom, boom! And the epilogue really was the icing on the cake.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publishers for the opportunity to read this ARC by one of my favorite writers!

The Hitchhikers in an intense, deeply emotional story. It is not a lighthearted thriller.
The plot is very character-driven, focusing mostly on their backstories and development.
There is descriptive violence, and SA.
It did have some twists, although I was able to see them coming.
Overall the story is good, and way more than what I was expecting to be a typical basic thriller.

A pair of hitchhikers are picked up by a couple who are on a road trip to forget about their own problems. Things quickly go awry when the young hitchhikers are discovered to be in the run from a murder. Kidnapped, the couple had to figure out how to escape the hitchhikers before it is too late for them and others along the journey.

I really enjoyed The Hitchhikers. As a Canadian, it was fun to adventure between different provinces in the 70s. The author did a great job setting the scene, the imagery flowed flawlessly in my mind.

I saw some reviews saying they found the book a bit too long, I disagree. I think it was needed in order to fully relate to the characters and tell the story.

This was my second book by Chevy Stevens, she will become an instant buy author for me!

Thank you NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the ARC!

4.5 ⭐️!!

I have read Chevy Steven’s book “Still Missing” and enjoyed it but I enjoyed this one far more. The whole book I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what crazy thing would happen next or who would be the next to die.

I really liked Alice and Tom and even though I didn’t want to, I had some semblance of sympathy for Jenny with everything she’d been through. I didn’t enjoy how she had no balls for the majority of the book, when it came to Simon.

I’ll be picking up another book by Chevy Stevens soon and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my ARC.

Love love love!!! I’ve been a long time fan of Chevy Steven’s and when I was approved for the ARC I knew I needed to put everything on the back burner to start this read. I devoured this book in about a day. It was a gripping, heartfelt thriller. I loved the all characters and the relationship that progressively developed between Alice and Jenny. Steven’s writing was fantastic and her plot was devouring. I was on the edge of my seat as I was trying to figure out Simons next moves. I appreciated the epilogue and thought it was a great full circle moment into the future lives of these characters. Very well done! Can’t wait to read more by Chevy Stevens. Thank you to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this arc in return for my honest review.

This was just so claustrophobic and tense…I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.

Tom and Alice are on the road in their RV heading to the Olympics. Things go awry when they pick up two young hitchhikers who are on the run for a gruesome murder. Things continue to spiral and Alice and Tom wonder if they will ever make it home alive.

This story was just soooooo immersive and tense. I could feel everything these characters felt and more.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for review.

Chevy Stevens is an author where I will read every book they write. I was excited to receive an ARC of her latest title. I felt this started out a bit slow, but as it progresses, the story picks up. This story is set in the late 1970s, with husband and wife Tom and Alice driving through Canada in their RV. When they kindly help a young couple at a campsite. The young woman is pregnant, so Alice and Tom extend their kindness, but it quickly turns into a nightmare as Alice discovers that the couple are wanted for murder and on the run. When Alice becomes the only person who can drive the RV, she and her husband are taken hostage and forced to help them continue their escape. As you might expect, there are dangerous consequences as they continue on their journey.

I thought the ending of the book was best part. I really enjoyed this one!

Trigger warning for pregnancy loss, which should tell you that the characters are struggling with grief and what the future holds.

3.5 🌟
slow burn start where I was unsure if I'd enjoy it. As the story progressed, it had moments of true thriller suspense. Storyline had a flow, thrilling moments, and a complete ending. Overall, I enjoyed the ARC read.

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens.

I am a huge fan of Chevy Stevens and I had high expectations going into this book. It did not let me down! In true Chevy Stevens fashion, this suspense/thriller had me glued from beginning to end. Plot twists and turns and more unexpected moments keep you turning pages up to the finale.

Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the arc.

Alice and Tom were a married couple who had an RV and they were traveling from Seattle to Canada to go to the Olympics. They stopped at a campsite where Alice met a young woman in the bathroom who went by the name of Ocean. She had blisters and Alice told her if she came back to the RV that she could give her some Band-Aids. When they left the bathroom Ocean was met by her boyfriend, Blue. They told Alice that they didn't have a tent but they were sleeping at the shore. Alice invited them back to the RV for lunch. After lunch, Tom invited them to stay for dinner. After that, Tom told them they could use his and Alice's tent. The next day, Ocean and Blue told them they were hitching to Canada and Tom invited them to join he and Alice. Along the way, they stopped at a store and Alice went in to buy groceries. She saw a newspaper and in it was a story about the two people that were with her who had killed Ocean's parents. It turns out their names were Jennifer and Simon. When they got to the next campsite, Alice showed Tom the article. Tom had brought along a gun with them and he pulled it on the couple. Simon freaked out and jumped Tom. He broke his collarbone and fractured his ribs. He also took the gun away from Tom and decided he was going to hold Alice and Tom captive.

In their travels, they make several stops. Simon decided to rob a gas station and he made Alice go along with him. In the gas station, he beat up the young man who worked there. Further along, they decided to get something to eat at an A&W Simon sent Jenny to get the food. When she got back she found her burger had tomatoes on it which she had ordered her burger not to have tomatoes on it. She took a bite without knowing and she got sick. Simon got angry and he took the burger back to have it made right. He was so angry that he decided he was going to rob the A&W, which he did and took Alice along with him. There were two young men working there and when Simon took the money out of the register he asked them if there was a safe. They told him there was a safe but that they didn't have the code. Simon beat one of the boys senseless until the other boy told him the key was in the cash register. Simon went to the safe and stole all of their money.

They went on their way and decided to stop at a church to get water for the radiator. A van pulled in behind them blocking their way. In the van was a guy and two girls. The guy got out and told Simon that since he had taken water from them the least he could do was to help unload the tables, which Simon did. The church was actually a cult. At any rate, after the young man and the two girls left, Simon took Alice inside the church and found marijuana inside along with several other things that Simon thought he could use. While they were there the pastor came and saw him holding the marijuana. He asked Simon to put it back and Simon got mad and beat the man senseless. There's a chance the man was dead. Alice was flabbergasted.

They stopped at a campsite. Jennifer was pregnant and when she went to the bathroom she realized she was bleeding. Alice told her she needed to see a doctor. They had seen a doctor's office in town so Simon had Alice go with Jennifer but he told Jennifer to keep an eye on her and never leave her alone. While they were in the examination room, Alice was sitting at the desk while the doctor was examining Jennifer. She saw an envelope there and she found a pen and she wrote a note to the doctor explaining how she and Tom had been kidnapped by Jennifer and Simon who were wanted for murder. She slid the envelope under a folder but left the corner of it out so the doctor would see it. After the doctor finished the examination, Jennifer went over to the desk and stood with Alice. She spotted the envelope and took it off the desk and put it in her pocket. After they left. She tore it up and put it in the trash can. She agreed not to tell Simon.

All along, Alice was the one driving because Tom was so seriously injured. The next stop happened when Alice drove into a ditch and they couldn't get the tire out. Simon got out and saw that it was pretty much hopeless. There was a farmhouse there and Ruth, the woman of the house, came out and asked them what the problem was. When she saw what had happened she told them that her husband William could get the tractor and pull the RV out. She invited them into the house for iced tea. Simon asked where the bathroom was. When he came out he was holding the gun on Ruth and William for what appeared to be no good reason. But he did ask William if he had a vehicle. William told him yes, he had a truck but it was broken. He also told him that he had most of the parts in the garage but hadn't gotten around to repairing it. Simon had decided that he was going to steal their truck so he threw Alice and Tom and Ruth and William in the basement. The only time you open the basement trap door was when he was forcing Alice to come out and cook.

Eventually Simon finished with the truck. He opened the trap door and made Alice come out and told her she was going to drive the truck. Of course she didn't want to, but since he had a gun she felt she had no choice. In the meantime, Ruth and William'©`s neighbor, Donna, came by the house looking for them. Simon brought Ruth out of the basement and told her to get rid of Donna, which she did. Later, the police came. Donna's husband was a police officer and she sent him over to make sure Ruth and William were okay. Simon, panicked and shot one of the two police officers.

Alice got behind the wheel of the truck in the garage and she blasted through the door and passed the police. Everyone was really tired so they decided to stop at a motel. While there, Simon sent Jennifer to the drugstore to buy more hair dye for them. As she was walking to the store a man stopped her and asked her where she was going. She had a bad feeling about him. He asked her if she needed a ride and she said no thank you. When she came back to the motel she told Simon about the encounter. The whole thing upset Simon so he told Jennifer he was going to steal the guy's car and he wanted her to play the patsy. So she went to the guy's motel room and told him that she wanted a ride. Simon came in behind her and decked the guy in the face. He pummeled him until the guy passed out. Simon took his keys, his cigarettes and his jewelry. The guy was a jewelry salesman.

I found myself a little frustrated with this book because basically, it was just beating after beating. I found myself wishing Alice had had opportunities to get away, but Simon kept her tied up much of the time and he always had a gun threatening her. She tried to tell Jennifer what kind of guy Simon was, but Jennifer didn't want to believe her. Quite frankly that irritated me. I mean, I know she was in love with Simon but Alice had no reason to lie to her about what he had done. Although I have to say, it was clearly evident to me why Jenny was the way she was. It was because of her upbringing. So while I wasn't terribly happy with the book, I really, really liked the ending. So in that way the author somewhat redeemed herself. I gave it three stars.

This was a good book. It isn't a psychological thriller in case anyone is looking for that. It is a suspense thriller with some violent scenes. I think the author did a good job of establishing the setting for the story and developing the relationship between our leads. There were definitely some traditional gender role elements taking place, which was reminiscent of classic suspense thriller/horrors and something that I liked.

I enjoyed a lot about this book. Being set in BC provided a familiar setting for me personally that helped immerse the narrative. I found the book to be thrilling and had me wondering how the characters would get out of their situation. The plot was thoroughly engaging and intense but somehow still wrapped up with an emotional and unexpected conclusion. This was my first Chevy Steven’s novel and I know I’ll be back for more!

It's 1976, and Alice and Tom are in their newly purchased RV taking a road trip through the Canadian wilderness. The couple is still reeling from a profound loss, and Tom didn't even ask Alice's opinion about the RV. It just appeared in front of the house one day, so to say the atmosphere is tense would be an understatement. While at a campsite, the couple encounters Ocean and Blue, two young hitchhikers who just need a ride. Once again, Tom takes control and invites the couple for dinner and then a drop-off in the next town. He'll wish he hadn't.

I so enjoyed the time period this was set in, and it would explain the dynamic between Tom and Alice--he is very much a provider, and these gender roles were the norm for the time period. He doesn't come off as narcissistic or arrogant. Alice may seem docile, but again, time period. And she's got a lot of inner strength that I deeply admired.

Most of the book was told in 'one shot' storytelling format, and while I didn't find the violence to be overt or gratuitous, if you're not used to that element in your books, it can be a lot since there are very few breaks from it. I've been so disappointed by some of the reviews I've read for this one. Nowhere in the description does it say that this is a psychological thriller, as some readers were evidently expecting, and it's getting low star ratings for being 'too violent.' You're allowed to be disappointed by a book. DNF to your heart's content. But don't unfairly rate a book because you didn't know what you were getting.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the early copy. Look for this one October 7, 2025.

Alice and Tom, a couple on a road trip, agree to pick up hitchhikers, a seemingly harmless young couple in need of a ride. Soon, Alice starts to notice that something is off with this couple. What comes next turns into a fight for survival in this heart-pounding thriller.

When a book by one of my favorite authors appeared on Netgalley, I jumped on the opportunity to read an early copy. I read this a little over a month ago, and with the many books I have read since, it's often difficult to remember the details. That said, I can officially say this is a memorable one. Whether it's because of her previous work or the writing itself, the tone was set within the first few pages, full of dread for what's to come. This was action-packed, fear-inducing, and fast-paced. This author is the epitome of a great storyteller. The characters were developed to a tee, the writing was descriptive, and the momentum was perfect. Four and a half stars.

Thank you, Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.

Thank you to Netgalley, St Martins Press, and Chevy Steves for this ARC. I was excited to receive this ARC as this is one of my favorite authors..tThis book was one killer of a ride ! A trip for 2 , turns into 4, alas, the hitchhikers..a bunch of twists and turns, twisted relationship, and more deception seen coming. One of my favorite books of Chevy Stevens, and I’ve read them all..I think this could be a great book club book with lots of discussion..
