American couple Alice and Tom are in the midst of their Canadian adventure when they met the young couple Simon and Jenny. The young couple warmed up to Alice and Tom (and vice versa) that the latter offered to give them a ride. Alice started feeling uneasy and not just because Jenny reminds her of her recent loss, but because there's something odd with the couple. And she's right. What's supposed to be a fun adventure turned out to be a nightmare for the couple...

I like Chevy Stevens as an author but this is my least favorite of her books that I've read. It drags so much in the middle and it's very predictable. It also leaves you with a ton of questions that are left unanswered in the book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a good read and had some interesting twists and turns but left me with some questions about Simon and such.

Set in 1976, The Hitchhikers throws you into a road trip that quickly veers into nightmare territory. Tom and Alice, hoping to patch things up in their marriage, take to the open road in their RV. When they cross paths with a seemingly down-on-their-luck young couple—Ocean and Blue—they extend a helping hand, offering them a ride to the next campsite. That one small decision turns out to be the spark that ignites a terrifying chain of events.

Spoiler alert: Ocean and Blue aren't who they claim to be. They're actually Jenny and Simon, fugitives with a dark past and blood on their hands. From there, the story unravels into a gripping, high-stakes journey full of paranoia and dread, where Tom and Alice are constantly questioning how—and if—they’ll survive.

As the tension ratchets up, Simon and Jenny’s instability becomes more and more alarming. They're impulsive, dangerous, and wildly unpredictable, and watching their unraveling felt like being on a runaway train. I found myself holding my breath more than once, especially as the psychological pressure built between all four characters.

Though I had a hunch about one of the twists, it didn’t take away from the ride. The suspense was thick, the characters were compelling, and the pacing kept me locked in. If you're into thrillers that make you tense up and lean in, this one’s worth the trip.

I’m new to this author, . This story follows a familiar pattern, and I found it a bit predictable. I didn’t particularly connect with any of the characters.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy!

My Rating: I loved it 👀

Ok this is my 5th book by Stevens and I think this is my favorite yet !

Buckle up folks because this is a WILD ride !!!

Holy 💩 talk about addictive, this was such a suspenseful page turner.

Be prepared to clear your calendar because you will be consumed by The Hitchhikers , I read this in 24 hours !

This was such a vivid read , taking us across beautiful British Columbia, I loved that I was very familiar with so many of the locations . The book also gives us nostalgic vibes as the story is set in 1976.

Tom & Alice are from Seattle and are taking a trip to find closure and some healing after a tragic event .

Along the way they see a young couple walking on the side of the road , when they set up for camp at a campground they befriend the young couple Ocean & Blue … you see where this is going 😱

Before you know it a kidnapping ensues and we are praying for everyone’s life and someone’s going to end up with a lot of blood 🩸 on their hands .

I lost track how many times I was yelling at the pages , Run, Hurry , what are you waiting for , Go , I was so invested and gripping EVERY page .

I felt suffocated and my anxiety was on high to very end !

Chevy Stevens has a way of writing these thrillers that are so enthralling transporting the reader and at the same time makes us feel sorry for these characters we despise that are flawed .

Read this if you like :

I love that the story was set in the 1970's and painted a picture of some of the lifestyles and clothing worn by those living in that era. Jenny and Simon (Blue and Ocean) are hitchhiking across Canada and meet Tom and Alice, who are Americans taking a road trip across the country to go to the Olympics. Tom and Alice are kind to Jenny and Simon, not knowing that they are dangerous and are on the run. They offer to give them a ride to the next town after the couples met at a campground, but events take place that cause them to be stuck with the young, unstable couple. I got angry with Jenny so many times for being so stupid and meek, and was afraid to see what Simon would do next. It makes you wonder if this event didn't happen, would the next event ever take place? It is worth reading it through, as what you think happened may not be exactly how it seems. The author is able to make you feel afraid of what will happen next, but also make you feel pity, anguish and annoyance by decisions made by all involved.

*The Hitchhikers* by Chevy Stevens is a wild, edge-of-your-seat thriller. It’s set in the ‘70s and follows a couple trying to fix their marriage—until they pick up two creepy hitchhikers and everything goes off the rails.

It’s fast, intense, and totally messed with my trust issues. If you’re into dark, twisty road trip vibes, this one’s a must.

Alice and Tom pick up a couple of kids hitchhiking across Canada. Tom thinks they are harmless; Alice thinks that there is something off about them. Both find out just how harmless a couple of hitchhikers can be.
A well written thriller that kept me reading to the end.

Slow burn but a great book. Intense and gripping storyline. Well developed characters. Parts of this will have you saying just one more chapter over and over again.

What starts out as a fun weekend enjoying their new camper, Alice and Tom find themselves on an adventure they did not sign up for after meeting a young couple they were trying to help.

This story throws you into a fast paced, nail biting experience that will have you flying through the pages. This book put me in the drivers seat and made me feel like I was thrown into the story. However, I found that the last 25% of the book missed the mark a bit. While I liked the overall ending, it seemed rushed and anticlimactic. Overall, good book and would recommend.

Thank you to #netgalley and #ChevyStevens for providing this ARC in exchange for my review.

Absolutely love this author. Have loved everything so far and this new title did not disappoint. This book hooks you right from the beginning and continues throughout. Great character development that keeps you invested throughout. While I wasn't surprised by the ending I was satisfied with it. Definitely recommend this book and anything by this author.

3 1/2 Stars

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙝𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 started out super strong. I love the premise of the book and it started out so spooky. On the remote Canadian highways in 1976, Tom and Alice are just starting their first RV ride as a way to restart their marriage after the terrible loss of a stillborn child. When they meet Ocean and Blue, a seemingly young, innocent couple, they offer to give them a ride. But Ocean and Blue turn out not to be what they seem - they are Jenny and Simon, on the run.

I loved the atmospheric vibes, capturing the spirit of that time and place, short chapters, and the beginning of the book really grabbed my attention. I loved the dual POV between Alice and Jenny and all that added to the story. Around the middle of the book, I felt the plot lagging, there were lots of action scenes that happened, things continue to spiral, but really it just sort of felt like more and more of the same. I also really think that the story would have benefited from a few chapters from Simon's POV.

I loved Alice's character, and I feel like Stevens did a great job overall in building out her characters and making them come to life on the page. As the twists start to pick up, you really do start wondering who is the really villain here and how is this all going to play out. Even the bad guys have a pretty fleshed out back story where the reader starts to see where they got where they are. I will say that with a slight exception of Simon - there are a few things about his character that I felt like didn't really get explained an I still have lingering questions (I won't say much more as I don't want to give any spoilers).

Even though the pacing struggled in the middle section, it really did pick up for me at the end and there were a few twists that I saw coming (a few surprises), but still, all in all, it was extremely well done and I enjoyed this overall. The style of writing and the character development, in particular, really shined.

Thank you to NetGalley, author Chevy Stevens and St. Martin's Press publishing for access to this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Bonnie and Clyde: MOVE OVER! The new kids in town in Chevy Stevens' The Hitchhikers have usurped your tarnished crowns with their infamous cruelty!

We all know by now what to expect from a Chevy Stevens novel: you have to be prepared to literally roll with the punches in this one!

The story starts off tamely enough - you even start to wonder if the author has changed her style? Gone all touristy and domestic bliss on us?

Nope. Not a chance!

The descriptions of the B.C. and Alberta countryside lulled you into a pleasant mood - only to be slammed with all that sudden violence and mayhem!

Alice and Tom are taking a break from the stress of a sadly failed pregnancy. On their way to the 2010 Olympic games in their shiny new RV, they pick up a young couple (Ocean and Blue - aka, Simon and Jenny) who appear seemingly normal. but on a quick stop to gas up and fetch some snacks, Alice catches sight of a newpaper and discovers that these youngsters are wanted by the police!

The pace begins to pick up, the dread builds, and that shattering climax had me holding my breath.

But, wait for it! There is a heartbreaking twist in those final few chapters. Chevy Stevens just about shatters your heart, but then puts it back together again with that last chapter.

I admit that I had to speed read through some of the very violent parts, but I knew what to expect from a Chevy Stevens novel, so I am not complaining! I also agree with some reviewers that the meal preps and shower schedules could have been omitted from the story, but I'm not really complaining. It made the story more realistic, in my opinion.

Once again, Chevy Stevens has given us another well-written, edge of your seat story that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. Four out of five stars for this scenic trip through the Canadian countryside in a state of the art (for 2010) RV! My thanks to Chevy Stevens, her publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Chevy Stevens is one of the authors who got me back into reading as an adult so I'm thankful I was able to snag an early copy of The Hitchhikers thanks to NetGalley!

On a trip to heal their marriage after a massive heartbreak, Alice and Tom set out on a trip in their new RV across Canada. Soon after they begin they meet Ocean and Blue. Two seemingly nice young kids who Alice and Tom assume have run away from home. Kid stuff. Tom quickly befriends them wanting to help them out, much to Alice's dismay who just wants time alone to heal. Stumbling upon a news article, Alice finds out Ocean and Blue are actually Jenny and Simon who are wanted for the murder of her mom and step dad. Alice and Tom are now trapped while the two keep them kidnapped as they continue across the country. Alice and Tom have lost hope on getting out alive.

This book kept me reading the entire time. I needed to know how it was going to end and I didn't see the ending coming. I would highly recommend this one to any thriller lovers!

This book was great! I did feel like it kind of dragged on in the middle and I got a little bored but I enjoyed it overall!

Also quite a few typos in the book, just fyi 👍🏻

It's late 1976 and Alice and Tom are tooling around in their RV trying to outrun the pain of miscarriage when they pick up two hitchhikers, Simon and Jenny and set off on a deadly roadtrip filled with bodies and violence. Will they make it out alive?

Though this book is filled with violent vignettes, none felt so overwhelming that I needed to put the book down. At its core it is the story of two couples trying to outrun the broken pieces of their lives, one turning to ever.

The imagery of the characters is taut and well depicted, especially the main characters of Simon, Alice and Jenny (Tom, Alice's husband lesser so). Told in dual POVs from the women, Jenny and Alice, the reader really feels the pain and confusion that each of the these characters feel.

The setting of small towns in Canada is perfect, lending to a hopelessness for being rescued/found out. A solid suspense novel. Four stars.

I received this advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Let me start by saying I absolutely love Chevy Steven’s and I knew I had to read this as soon as I saw it! This book is set in 1976 and follows a pair of hitchhikers who are trying to “escape their past”. It doesn’t take long for the plot to really thicken and we meet Amy and Tom who get drug into this great escape.
This is one of those books that you kind of have to wait until the end for things to really ramp up and come together and you won’t be disappointed by what you find out.
Definitely a solid 4/5 stars!
