I love Chevy Stevens and I’ve been waiting so long for her to write another book. Unfortunately for me this one was a bit of a let down. I found the pacing very slow and the book very predictable from beginning to end.

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens. A fast paced, suspenseful read. Many unpredictable twists and turns and well developed characters especially Alice and Simon. More than a satisfying and heartfelt ending. This story is an excellent reason why there are “Do Not Pickup Hitchhikers” signs along the highway and byways.

Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This was a wild ride! It was pretty intense and had me wanting to see what happened next. I loved the setting and everything was explained in great detail. I loved the way it ended however I had a feeling that was the direction it was going. So good! This is my second book from Chevy Stevens and I can’t wait to read more!

~3.75 ⭐️

This is a bit of a tough one to rate. The beginning totally caught my attention, and I really enjoyed the ending. The middle is where most of my critiques lie. Was it a pacing issue? Was the book just a little bit longer than it needed to be? I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but I'm still glad I stuck with it...

Thank you NetGalley for a digital copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own and freely given.
The Hitchhikers is set in 1975, when hitchhiking was rampant. Tom and Alice are going to the Olympics, traveling by RV. They see a young couple and decide to give them a ride. But Alice soon realizes, they lied. Their names aren't really Blue and Ocean and they are on the run from the heinous crime of murdering "Ocean's" family. Alice and Tom are quickly taken as hostages and they try everything they can to escape,
This was a very well written story and I highly recommend.

I was so excited to get to read this book early ever since I read "Still Missing" nearly ten years ago and loved it. Her books were one of the first thrillers I ever read and helped get me into the genre!

Unfortunately, this book was a bit of a letdown and I agree with a lot of the other reviews in that the book was frustrating to get through. I liked the beginning and the ending but you really just want to shake some of the characters for their lack of inaction which makes a big portion of the book drag. This got to the point where everything felt a bit contrived just to serve the plot. There were easily endless ways for the characters to get themselves out of situation but instead make half hearted attempts that shockingly go nowhere. I don't think the ending saved the book, but it did a good job bringing everything together and helping the reader connect more with the characters.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens is a chilling and suspenseful thriller that keeps you hooked from the first page. Stevens masterfully builds tension as she weaves a dark tale of survival, secrets, and trust on the open road. It’s a gripping, fast-paced read with strong characters and unexpected twists.

I received an advance copy of this book from Net Galley via St. Martins Press. I am fan of Chevy Steven’s novels. This one was not my first and won’t be my last. The story takes place in the 70s so a bit historical fiction and a lot of suspense. A husband and wife who are taking a vacation road trip in their RV are taken hostage by a young couple on the run.

I don’t want to give anything away because there are good plot twists in this book. Initially the vacationers are friendly to the young couple. But when the young couple realizes the wife knows they are on the run, and why, the suspense kicks up. The tension builds as the young couple now have the vacationers and their RV on the run. It seems like there is no way this can end well. I will only say that I loved the

Tom and Alice a nice middle aged couple from the USA decide to take a road trip across Canada in their brand new RV when trouble ensues.
This is an intense story of what can go wrong when you try to help strangers and that things are not always as they seem. I liked the fast pace and character development in this book and couldn't wait to finish it! I will be reading more books by Chevy Stevens in my future!

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens, begins in July 1976 with Tom and Alice starting a road trip in their RV to the Summer Olympics in Montreal. They meet and take in a young hitchhiking couple (Simon and Jenny)not knowing that they are on the run from killing the girl’s’ parents. Throughout the novel as Tom and Alice try to escape the couple, we learn more about what drove Jenny and Simon to commit their crimes as well as more about Tom and Alice’s relationship. At the end of the ordeal everyone is changed and some have experienced redemption. I really enjoyed the pace of this thriller while also growing to care about the characters. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced reader copy!

I have read every novel by Chevy Stevens! I am thrilled that I got to read The Hitchhikers months before publication. As a child of the 1970's, I was drawn into the story immediately. I love a book that takes place in the era of orange and brown shag carpeting because it makes me nostalgic. The premise is outstanding with Alice and Tom in their new RV heading for a road trip into Canada to get to the summer Olympics. Living in 2025, it is hard to imagine the days of paper road maps, no cellphones, nor any emergency alerts. However, this lack of technology in 1976 is what makes the story possible. Simon and Jenny are on the run after Jenny's parents were murdered. Alice and Tom happen upon the teenagers at a campground and they offer them a ride. They end up together for a day or two before Alice learns what the teenagers have done. By then it is too late, and Alice and Tom become their captives.

Alice was an amazing, strong character, Her grit and determination was admirable and is typical of the female leads in Chevy Stevens' novels. I don't want to ruin the book, but I loved the big plot twist and the tidy, serendipituous ending. I rated this one four stars because I thought it had a slower start that may cause some readers to abandon it.

Chevy Stevens has done it again with The Hitchhikers, an absolutely riveting thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. Her ability to create raw, emotionally driven characters while weaving in suspense is unmatched, and this book is a perfect example of why I love her work. The tension is palpable, the pacing relentless, and the twists land with real impact. Stevens never disappoints, and The Hitchhikers might just be one of her best yet.

This was the first Chevy Stevens book I have read, and it did not disappoint! It was full of action and suspense.

I found myself feeling irritated with Jenny for not stopping most of the things that happened but at the end of the story, I understood why she was so in love (or thought she was in love) with Simon. I felt so bad for both of them, having to endure the loss of one parent and then having to deal with abuse. Although they each dealt with different types of abuse, Jenny had it worst in my opinion.

There were many things that happened all throughout this story that kept me wanting to read and understand Simon's thought process. It seemed as if he really didn't want to do anything bad but ended up acting on instinct. Jenny just pretty much went along for the ride, which would cost her a lot of heartache. They were both in need of love and understanding but bonded with each other because of the traumatic events they experienced.

The entire story was very well written and easy to follow. The author did a great job in portraying each character. I did like that this story had a bittersweet ending - although I would have loved a happy one - but given the circumstances, bittersweet was as good as it was going to get.

This was 4.5 stars for me! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It would have been a 5 star had I not been able to predict some of the events that occurred.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Read if you like:
- A Canadian setting
- Dual POV with flashbacks
- A road trip in the 70’s

Alice and Tom are on a cross-Canada road trip in an RV to attend the Montreal Olympics when they meet two hitchhikers at a campground and decide to offer them a ride. Unfortunately for them the hitchhikers have their own sinister agenda.

I was excited to read this having previously enjoyed Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens. She does a great job of writing a Canadian setting and I enjoyed that aspect of this book. However, overall I found this book pretty meh. I found the beginning to be too slow for a thriller, I found myself frustrated with character decisions multiple times, and I wasn’t overly invested until closer to the end. I did really enjoy the last quarter though.

Also, there were several typos, including Alice incorrectly referring to Jenny as Jenny at the beginning before she learned her real name.

Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC ebook - releases October 7!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.

It’s 1976, and Tom and Alice have been through some trying times in their marriage. To reconnect, they buy a Winnebago and take to the highway. On their first night at a campground, they meet Blue and Ocean, or Simon and Jenny. The couple are hitchhiking, and Tom and Alice offer them a ride to the next town. When they stop at a gas station, Alice learns from a newspaper that Blue and Ocean are wanted for murder and considered armed and dangerous. Alice’s attempt to tell Tom is thwarted by Blue, with Tom being injured. Then the nightmare begins as the couple are held captive as Blue and Ocean embark on a violent crime spree.

Much like the author’s previous book, Dark Roads, this started with a bang, ended with a whimper. The premise is interesting, but the story just wasn’t captivating, and was too long and dragged on. While there is a lot of backstory, the characters still lacked any depth or complexity. Alice was a doormat and had a few opportunities to seek help, but chickened out. In one instance, she is separated from Tom, and Blue gets into a fight with another man. Instead of jumping on Blue’s back and gouging out his eyes or picking up something to hit him in the head, she shrank against the wall.

With such disappointing characters, I lost interest. I did read to the end, and thought the predictable ending just didn’t fit the story.

This is a great twisty story. I’ve read all the books from this author and she just keeps getting better. I did not see that twist coming!

I was very excited to get a Chevy Steven's ARC as I've loved everything of hers I've read! This one however missed the mark for me unfortunately. The characters seemed really dumb and there were lots of unnecessary descriptions & events that just seemed to drag out the story! It takes place in the 70's, which I was also excited about as I love books from that era, but you wouldnt know it except for a few things they refer too towards the end, and the fact that there is no cameras or cell phones anywhere. The ending was predictable as well. I really wanted to love this one! Thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for the ARC!

They say to never pick up hitchhikers, you just never know. A good deed becomes a complex nightmare with secrets and violence and relentless tension that all unfolds in unexpected ways. A solid and suspenseful mystery.
