Alice and Tom pick up a couple of kids hitchhiking across Canada. Tom thinks they are harmless; Alice thinks that there is something off about them. Both find out just how harmless a couple of hitchhikers can be.
A well written thriller that kept me reading to the end.

Slow burn but a great book. Intense and gripping storyline. Well developed characters. Parts of this will have you saying just one more chapter over and over again.

What starts out as a fun weekend enjoying their new camper, Alice and Tom find themselves on an adventure they did not sign up for after meeting a young couple they were trying to help.

This story throws you into a fast paced, nail biting experience that will have you flying through the pages. This book put me in the drivers seat and made me feel like I was thrown into the story. However, I found that the last 25% of the book missed the mark a bit. While I liked the overall ending, it seemed rushed and anticlimactic. Overall, good book and would recommend.

Thank you to #netgalley and #ChevyStevens for providing this ARC in exchange for my review.

Absolutely love this author. Have loved everything so far and this new title did not disappoint. This book hooks you right from the beginning and continues throughout. Great character development that keeps you invested throughout. While I wasn't surprised by the ending I was satisfied with it. Definitely recommend this book and anything by this author.

3 1/2 Stars

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙝𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 started out super strong. I love the premise of the book and it started out so spooky. On the remote Canadian highways in 1976, Tom and Alice are just starting their first RV ride as a way to restart their marriage after the terrible loss of a stillborn child. When they meet Ocean and Blue, a seemingly young, innocent couple, they offer to give them a ride. But Ocean and Blue turn out not to be what they seem - they are Jenny and Simon, on the run.

I loved the atmospheric vibes, capturing the spirit of that time and place, short chapters, and the beginning of the book really grabbed my attention. I loved the dual POV between Alice and Jenny and all that added to the story. Around the middle of the book, I felt the plot lagging, there were lots of action scenes that happened, things continue to spiral, but really it just sort of felt like more and more of the same. I also really think that the story would have benefited from a few chapters from Simon's POV.

I loved Alice's character, and I feel like Stevens did a great job overall in building out her characters and making them come to life on the page. As the twists start to pick up, you really do start wondering who is the really villain here and how is this all going to play out. Even the bad guys have a pretty fleshed out back story where the reader starts to see where they got where they are. I will say that with a slight exception of Simon - there are a few things about his character that I felt like didn't really get explained an I still have lingering questions (I won't say much more as I don't want to give any spoilers).

Even though the pacing struggled in the middle section, it really did pick up for me at the end and there were a few twists that I saw coming (a few surprises), but still, all in all, it was extremely well done and I enjoyed this overall. The style of writing and the character development, in particular, really shined.

Thank you to NetGalley, author Chevy Stevens and St. Martin's Press publishing for access to this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Bonnie and Clyde: MOVE OVER! The new kids in town in Chevy Stevens' The Hitchhikers have usurped your tarnished crowns with their infamous cruelty!

We all know by now what to expect from a Chevy Stevens novel: you have to be prepared to literally roll with the punches in this one!

The story starts off tamely enough - you even start to wonder if the author has changed her style? Gone all touristy and domestic bliss on us?

Nope. Not a chance!

The descriptions of the B.C. and Alberta countryside lulled you into a pleasant mood - only to be slammed with all that sudden violence and mayhem!

Alice and Tom are taking a break from the stress of a sadly failed pregnancy. On their way to the 2010 Olympic games in their shiny new RV, they pick up a young couple (Ocean and Blue - aka, Simon and Jenny) who appear seemingly normal. but on a quick stop to gas up and fetch some snacks, Alice catches sight of a newpaper and discovers that these youngsters are wanted by the police!

The pace begins to pick up, the dread builds, and that shattering climax had me holding my breath.

But, wait for it! There is a heartbreaking twist in those final few chapters. Chevy Stevens just about shatters your heart, but then puts it back together again with that last chapter.

I admit that I had to speed read through some of the very violent parts, but I knew what to expect from a Chevy Stevens novel, so I am not complaining! I also agree with some reviewers that the meal preps and shower schedules could have been omitted from the story, but I'm not really complaining. It made the story more realistic, in my opinion.

Once again, Chevy Stevens has given us another well-written, edge of your seat story that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. Four out of five stars for this scenic trip through the Canadian countryside in a state of the art (for 2010) RV! My thanks to Chevy Stevens, her publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Chevy Stevens is one of the authors who got me back into reading as an adult so I'm thankful I was able to snag an early copy of The Hitchhikers thanks to NetGalley!

On a trip to heal their marriage after a massive heartbreak, Alice and Tom set out on a trip in their new RV across Canada. Soon after they begin they meet Ocean and Blue. Two seemingly nice young kids who Alice and Tom assume have run away from home. Kid stuff. Tom quickly befriends them wanting to help them out, much to Alice's dismay who just wants time alone to heal. Stumbling upon a news article, Alice finds out Ocean and Blue are actually Jenny and Simon who are wanted for the murder of her mom and step dad. Alice and Tom are now trapped while the two keep them kidnapped as they continue across the country. Alice and Tom have lost hope on getting out alive.

This book kept me reading the entire time. I needed to know how it was going to end and I didn't see the ending coming. I would highly recommend this one to any thriller lovers!

This book was great! I did feel like it kind of dragged on in the middle and I got a little bored but I enjoyed it overall!

Also quite a few typos in the book, just fyi 👍🏻

It's late 1976 and Alice and Tom are tooling around in their RV trying to outrun the pain of miscarriage when they pick up two hitchhikers, Simon and Jenny and set off on a deadly roadtrip filled with bodies and violence. Will they make it out alive?

Though this book is filled with violent vignettes, none felt so overwhelming that I needed to put the book down. At its core it is the story of two couples trying to outrun the broken pieces of their lives, one turning to ever.

The imagery of the characters is taut and well depicted, especially the main characters of Simon, Alice and Jenny (Tom, Alice's husband lesser so). Told in dual POVs from the women, Jenny and Alice, the reader really feels the pain and confusion that each of the these characters feel.

The setting of small towns in Canada is perfect, lending to a hopelessness for being rescued/found out. A solid suspense novel. Four stars.

I received this advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Let me start by saying I absolutely love Chevy Steven’s and I knew I had to read this as soon as I saw it! This book is set in 1976 and follows a pair of hitchhikers who are trying to “escape their past”. It doesn’t take long for the plot to really thicken and we meet Amy and Tom who get drug into this great escape.
This is one of those books that you kind of have to wait until the end for things to really ramp up and come together and you won’t be disappointed by what you find out.
Definitely a solid 4/5 stars!

This was pretty good! Alice and Tom are on a road trip after a tragedy and end up picking up two hitchhikers named ocean and blue except these two are actually Jenny and Simon and they’re running away from a crime they committed. The middle got a bit repetitive and I had a hard time convincing myself to keep reading it but I’m glad I did. I was notttt expecting the ending at all.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this!

As a senior citizen who did a lot of hitchhiking as a teenager, I was intrigued by the title of this novel. I found the writing style to be interesting and the slow development of the story to be superb. The husband and wife traveling in their RV are likable characters and this reader was immediately suspicious of the hitchhikers they meet at a rest stop. The book is replete with murders (sometimes graphically described), thefts, fights and other events as they travel across Canada. The novel is quick reading and is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys this genre and I thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication.

What a ride! When Alice and Tom pick up two hitchhickers during their Canadian travels in the late 70's, a chain of events is set in motion that will keep you turning the pages. This was another action-packed suspense novel by Chevy Stevens that would appeal to anyone who loves a fast-paced plot-driven story.

I did dock a stor from my ratiing simply because the novel felt a bit long and repetitive in a couple parts. Around the 60% mark I felt myself skim-reading.

Thank you to Netgalley for the early review copy!

First off, thank you very much for this eARC that was generously provided by the publisher and author via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I initially started out absolutely loving this book. It sucked me in right from the beginning and I was reading it every chance I got. But about halfway in not much had happened and it felt very repetitive in what WAS happening. Over and over the same situation with a continuous negative outcome. So sadly, I struggled to finish it and in the end I felt like it was way too long.

Also, I predicted the ending very, very early on, and that’s never a good thing, at least in my opinion. Although it was just an average 3 star for me, it was well written and the plot was good. I liked it, but I didn’t love it.

This was my very first Chevy Stevens read. Very well written. Loved that it had my attention from the very first paragraph. I did however figure out the ending. Very enjoyable read! Will be reading more from this author.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this early release.

Chevy did it again! This book takes you on an emotional roller coaster of emotions, and sometimes you can’t figure out if you should feel disgusted or sympathetic. This read keeps you on your toes, always wondering what’s gonna happen next!

This book didn’t work for me.
The characters were unlikable, unrelatable and quite frankly- annoying.
I also didn’t buy the whole story’… why would MC just not say something???

I have never read a book that was both so good and so emotionally draining. I thoroughly enjoyed The Hitchhikers, but whewwww this one was BRUTAL. It was violent, traumatizing, and incredibly hard to sit with at times, but I refused to give up on it. That said, please take the TRIGGER WARNINGS seriously: this book includes violence, sexual assault of a minor, and child loss.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it's frustrating from start to finish, but if you push through it, I believe it’s worth it. I’m giving this one 4 out of 5 stars.

The story is set in the 1970s and begins with Alice and Tom, a grieving couple, taking a road trip across Canada in their RV. They're hoping for a break from reality after losing a child.

At a campsite, they meet two young hitchhikers, Ocean and Blue, and what starts as an act of kindness quickly turns into a nightmare. Now, this is during the peak Ted Bundy era, and here they are inviting strangers along like we’re not in the middle of serial killer season. What could possibly go wrong?

Blue (real name Simon) is a sadistic, manipulative monster. Ocean (Jenny) is a helpless, pregnant girl who’s emotionally stunted and disturbingly dependent on him. From there, the story spirals into an extended chase full of bloodshed, tension, and missed chances.

And that’s where my frustration came in. Alice had SO many opportunities to escape, and I just wanted to reach into the page and shake her. But at the same time, her reactions felt painfully real. That’s what made it all the more unsettling.

I loved the writing style and the way the POVs shifted between Alice and Jenny. But I kept wishing we could’ve seen inside Simon or Tom’s heads, too. That added perspective would’ve made the emotional stakes hit even harder.

The ending was a bit predictable, but it didn’t ruin anything for me. I was still fully locked in, and honestly? I’ll definitely be looking into more books by Chevy Stevens after this.

Thank you to NetGalley, Chevy Stevens, and St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
