Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of this book.

My first read from Chevy Stevens was Those Girls, which I read in one sitting because it was so intriguing. Blue and Ocean, two hippie hitchhikers, stumble upon an American couple travelling in Canada in their new RV, Alice and Tom. Alice and Tom invite them to eat dinner and help shelter them for the night. Unfortunately, Ocean and Blue are not who or what they seem, and they turn out to be worse than what Alice was trying to shelter them from.

The story started off strong, but started to drag around the 30% mark. That could be because as you get further into the story, the more unlikeable our hitchhikers become. With that, I started to lose hope for our protagonist, who was consistently put into the same situation. While the middle dragged and felt repetitive, I was happy with the ending and thought it was effective in wrapping up the two story lines.

Throughout the story, we get flashbacks to the past, including the events that lead up to Alice and Tom’s trip, and how Ocean and Blue ended up on the run.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a slow read for me. I typically read a book in a few days and this took me 5. I didn’t see trigger warnings, but I may have just missed them. This may be the reason this was hard for me to read, but I also just didn’t find it particularly entertaining aside from the trigger.

Set in 1976, Alice and Tom set out on a roadtrip in Canada to go to the Olympics and reconnect after some unfortunate circumstances hit their family. Early on, they offer help to a young couple planning on hitchhiking. What they don’t know is their new guests are suspects in a murder investigation and will do anything to escape the consequences of their actions.

The first 55% I found very slow, but then I was able to get Into it. I gave it 3 stars because of how long it took me to read as well as I had guessed the spoilers very early on.

Hooked from the very beginning!
I couldn’t stop thinking about this book, constantly wondering what would happen next. I once again didn’t see it coming. Chevy Stevens always delivers heart wrenching situations that sometimes make me need to look away from the words to stop the images from coming. I’ll always look forward to her writing another book!!!
Alice and Tom come across hitchhikers while on an RV road trip after a devastating loss. “Befriending” the younger couple leads to mind boggling situations I never saw coming.
It makes you question yourself as to what you would do in a given situation.

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens. This is why you don’t pick up hitchhikers! It’s the 1976, Tom and Alice are trying to reconnect after a difficult birthing experience. He goes out a purchases an RV to do some traveling. In the early phase of the trip, they pick up Blue and Ocean. Everything is going well until Alice figures out Blue and Ocean are wanted for murder.

The story line is believable but somehow a bit far fetched. Blue and Ocean keep getting away with things and sometimes it’s like really!? But I guess the author needed to do that for the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for this ARC book.

Do you know sometimes when you’re reading a book and you think it’s just okay, but then you dream about it?

That’s what happened to me while I was reading The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens.

It’s 1976, and Alice and Tom, an American couple, have set out in their RV for a Canadian sightseeing adventure.

It’s a road trip to mend their fractured marriage after the tragedy of losing a child.

But they make the mistake of offering two young hitchhikers, Ocean and Blue, a ride. And these kids are not even close to as innocent as they seem.

The last book I had a nightmare about like this was Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. I didn’t understand it because I knew what was going to happen in that book, which was basically a Dateline episode.

I felt the same way when I had the dream about this book. You know that Alice and Tom are making a mistake, but there’s no way to warn them.

*No Spoilers* 4.5 stars rounded up to 5-star review. This was a great well-paced thriller cleverly set in 1976. This setting gives a nostalgic feel of horror movies and crime in that time, especially with hitchhikers. A time without cell phones or the internet but with issues we still face in the present day.
This is my first book by this author, and I expected a good thriller but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of characters and feelings it evoked in me throughout it. I was totally invested in these characters. It is about Tom and Alice, a couple who have been married a long time and are trying to heal and reconnect on a long RV road trip. They come across a young “hippie” couple who they befriend and offer a ride. But this young couple is not as innocent as they appear. Thus begins an edge of your seat plot that ebbs and flows with danger, cunning and desperation. Character depth is introduced through POVs, past flashbacks, current motives and actions. Heavy themes are discussed throughout, and I did not expect to feel heartache, sadness, love and care for these individuals. The last line of the book made me cry. There were also plenty of twists and reveals that only heightened the feelings in the reader.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to those who love literacy fiction, romance, female rage, thrillers and page turners.

I absolutely loved The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens. It’s my first book by this author, and definitely won’t be my last.

I really dug the 70s setting, and Stevens did a wonderful job immersing the reader in the atmosphere, from the clothing descriptions to the vehicles…chefs kiss!

Now on to the plot. I was sucked in from the first few pages, and it never let up. I actually felt tense many times throughout, as I stressed FOR the characters.

The character interactions and dynamics were very believable, and that’s part of what made the entire situation so scary. Each character was realistic, nothing about them felt forced or over the top. .If you like a good character driven story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, I think you’ll really like The Hitchhikers. There were some great twists and turns as well.

If you enjoy a good thriller with believable characters, I highly recommend that you grab a a copy of The Hitchhiker, buckle in and enjoy the ride!

From the moment Tom and Alice offered the young couple assistance, they would be fighting for their lives.

Chevy Stevens has written another excellent book, with her ability to put you in the character's shoes... Feeling what they feel, thinking what they think.

The twist at the end was fantastic. I did not see it coming!!

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I have loved every book by this author but not this one. I find it so hard to believe that it was even written by Chevy Stevens. It should have been at least 100 pages shorter and it got to the point that I was so far fetched that it was comical and I found myself skimming the end. The main character, Alice, was just a joke with no backbone at all. I was so excited to be granted an arc copy but what a disappointment.

The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens kicks off with a really exciting and tense beginning that had me hooked right away. I loved that it was set in the 70s and an RV trip. Something a little different to what I've been reading lately. But about halfway through, the story started to drag, and I found myself getting a bit frustrated with how long it was taking to get to the resolution. The writing is solid, but I didn’t feel particularly connected to any of the characters, which made it harder to stay fully invested. That said, the twist at the end was a nice touch and helped redeem things a bit. Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

I absolutely adore Chevy Stevens and have been reading her books since her debut over a decade ago. Each time I hear about a new release from Stevens, I jump to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, The Hitchhikers did not quite work me the same way that some of her earlier thrillers did, but this was still an exciting ride from start to finish.

This one was a mixed bag for me. I liked the premise and the 1970s setting, it made the story feel authentic in a way thrillers in a modern, technology driven world, can’t always pull off. The dual POVs worked well, and I enjoyed Chevy Stevens’ writing style. But the pacing dragged early on, and I struggled to connect with the characters. I didn’t feel much for them, which made the first half feel even slower.

Thankfully, the ending picked up a bit and offered a small twist that changed my perception of the characters. That final act saved it a bit, but I still found myself wishing for more resolution, especially about what happened to certain side characters. A solid concept, but not a standout for me.

Solid 4 - 4.5 ⭐
This was my first Chevy Stevens novel, eventhough I've had a couple on my tbr for a while. I really enjoyed it. It was suspenseful, gripping and paced just right. It kept me interested even through the few lagging bits in between and was hard to put down at times. It mostly ended how I hoped it would and had a few good twists. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! While the book did keep me interested, I thought it got too long and drawn out to get to the resolution.

A couple traveling across Canada in an RV meets two hitchhikers and makes the bad decision to give them a ride. They’re not who they are pretending to be and things go down hill very quickly. I wanted more suspense and drama build and less graphic violence. Just wasn’t my type of thriller.

Wow....this was my first book by Chevy Stevens and I definitely was not disappointed. The character development we get throughout this book is TOP NOTCH. Throughout the story line you really feel for all of the characters involved. You learn what makes them tick and what their driving force is. I would love to see this play out as a movie because I feel as though the details played a movie in my mind, which never happens. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more from Chevy in the future!

This book was intense. Seriously, non-stop, keep you on the edge of your seat things happening in every single chapter. A psychological thriller by any definition! The story kept me guessing, messed with my head, and the twists at the end were on point. This story will live in my head for a while.
Read it so you can get your blood pressure up like i did.

5 STARS!!

WOW! The Hitchhikers was a thriller, disturbing, wild ride from start to finish. I read A LOT of thrillers but this was my first one from Chevy Stevens, but certainly will not be my last. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book and couldn't stop reading. And the twist! I literally gasped because I didn't see it coming at all. I loved it!

Thank you to Chevy Stevens, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

This was an amazing cat and mouse tale. A married couple who take what they hope is a relaxing trip find the opposite when they pick up a young couple who are hiding a terrible secret. This was so well written- I felt like I was right there with them the whole time.
