Thank you to St. Martins Press and netgalley for this early read! I haven’t done one in a while, but Chevy Stevens is one of my favorite authors so I took the publisher up on this offer in exchange for an honest review.

The story is centered around this middle aged couple and a very young couple. The hitchhikers—young couple—end up hitching a ride with the middle aged couple in their RV. Upon a visit at a gas station, Alice learns that the young g couple is on the run for murder. All hell breaks loose when the hitchhikers find out the couple knows. We follow them through the chaotic journey to “freedom”.

The character building was decent. I really enjoyed seeing the fight of Alice’s heart. I also felt immensely for Jenny—even though she made some poor decisions.

I will say that the ending was predictable within the first half of the book, although not all of it. Not a bad ending at all though.

I think the book is overall thrilling and heartwarming(at the end). I would have liked to know more about Ruth, William, and Bones. Also, whatever happened to Simon? Like I know what happened but was he ever located?

Again, thank you to St Martins Press and netgalley for this early read (:

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's been awhile since I have read anything by this author, but I remember her previous novels and they are all great.

Chevy Stevens is BACK and I am so glad. The Hitchhikers was suspenseful and thrilling from page 1. A bit far fetched but unputdownable. Tom and Alice were likeable characters where Simon and Jenny were not. I enjoyed how Alice became the heroine and overcame her insecurities in the process. The book ended on a note where it felt like there was more to the story. I am hopeful Chevy will write more. All in all, this was a solid read.

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the arc of The Hitchhikers by Chevy Stevens.

This novel reminded me how much I love Steven’s writing! This novel is a must read and you could get lost for an entire day. Add this to your summer must read list right now!

Alice and Tom find themselves in an emotional and marital rut. Tom wants to rejuvenate their life and get his wife back. A RV road trip across Canada to the Olympics is hopefully their saving grace.

When Alice meets a young traveler who appears run down and in need of help she invites her back to the RV to use their first aide kit. Simon and Jenny are a young couple who are in need of a helping hand and Alice’s maternal instinct kicks in. One night of help turns into two which ultimately turns into a terrifying road trip and a hostage situation.

Simon and Jenny are on the run and the media is looking for them following a brutal double homicide. Will Tom and Alice’s kindness lead them to their untimely demise as well?

An act of kindness has turned into days of torture and trauma. How could helping two seemingly innocent teens turn into a cross country nightmare? This is a page turner that was impossible not to read in one sitting. Stevens is a master.

Chevy Stevens is an automatic buy for me; I don't even look to see what the book is about! The Hitchhikers is a nail biter, edge of your seat trip in all ways possible. The road trip that was supposed to help a couple reconnect in their marriage goes horrible wrong and becomes a terrifying series of events. This is a definite page turner right to the end.

The book kept dragging on. There needs more editing. It would have been better if it would have been at least 100 less. Other than that, the story is good, if not almost predictable.

Tom and Alice embark on an RV adventure in Canada from the US where they cross paths with young wanderers “Ocean” and “Blue.” The expectant couple is unprepared for their journey, living rough, and Alice and Tom feel compelled to help them. You know what they say about good deeds, right? After traveling with the pair for a while, Alice learns their true identities, Jenny and Simon, at a gas stop, finding the pair wanted for the brutal stabbing deaths of a Canadian couple. Things take a turn. Held hostage by two people desperate to make a run for it, Tom is seriously injured and Alice is forced to be an unwilling accomplice to all sorts of things. Will they survive? What will happen to Jenny, Simon, and the unborn baby? What about anyone else they come across? Is Simon trying to make a life for their budding family, or might he be a psychopath?

To say The Hitchhiker’s is tense would be an understatement. I loved Alice and Tom early on. Simon is an easily detestable villain. Jenny is complicated. I came to appreciate her burden as the plot unfolded.

A well-written, emotional thrill ride, this one borders on bleak by the time the twist factors in. I would not have seen the ending coming as soon as I did if Tom and Alice’s backstory had been revealed later, which I think would have been better, but I’m grateful the novel ended redemptively. It’s a heavy story that deals with complicated issues, not recommended for people who are sensitive to domestic or home invasion violence. Recommended for fans of stories like Natural Born Killers, maybe, though not as diabolical. It’s thrilling, and the tension ratchets up slowly, leading to a powder keg moment. This one’s going to stick with me for a while. It’s horrific but not gratuitously so. Real horror set in the 70s where there’s no cell phone rescue. Don't miss this one when it releases on October 7. 2025.

Thank you to NetGalley, Chevy Stevens, and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.

Never pick up hitchhikers! Wow! This novel will grip every nerve in your body as you come upon yet another desperate intense scene of survival of the victims as well as the perpetrators. You need to read this book to realize the horror and also the love and caring shown by the instigators and the survivors.

The beginning really pulled me in and I was hooked! Unfortunately the middle of the book felt super repetitive and I wanted the plot to move along in a more satisfying way. I found myself skimming during Alice's chapters and really only wanting to read Jenny's chapters. The end got more satisfying although a bit predictable. I'm having a hard time rating the book as it was pretty I only liked about half the book so 2.5 stars seems reasonable.

A story about two young hitchhikers with a dangerous past, and what happens when they catch a ride with a married couple traveling across the country in a RV. I enjoyed the plot of this story, but did not feel emotionally connected with any of the characters. I feel like caused some parts of the story to drag in places.

Chevy Stevens is an auto-read for me so I was very excited for this one. Dual POV, set in the 70s, fantastic cover! Alice and Tom are traveling through Canada, trying to reconnect after a rough season. They come across a younger couple and hospitable Tom offers them a ride, a decision he will quickly regret. Jenny and Simon are on the run and Simon will stop at nothing to make sure they aren’t caught.

The dual perspectives were distinct and you could feel Alice’s turmoil and Jenny’s earnestness, along with their relationship being built among the chaos. There is violence, but Stevens knows just where to draw the line to not lose her reader. Overall, a solid thriller with depth, like most of Stevens’ books.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy and a chance to read this early. All opinions are my own.

As a long time Chevy Stevens fan, I was super excited to learn she has a new book coming out, and even more thrilled to have the opportunity to read it pre-publication. I don't think Chevy Stevens can write a bad book. The Hitchhikers is clear proof of that theory.

The plot could be considered a bit of a slow burn in parts, but I was never bored. The story is taut and tensely woven, simmering with anxiety and dread. Each character was so fully developed, and as back stories were revealed, the author showed a rare empathy for her characters that made it difficult to completely find even the worse ones all bad. The story was set in 1975, and Ms. Stevens did a great job of evoking that time period. 4.5 stars.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review- a wild ride!
Alice and Tom has struggled to have a baby and it has troubled their marriage. They decide to take a trip in an RV. They spot a couple teenagers walking and reach out to help them not knowing anything about them. Then begins days of fear and struggle. Can they survive?

Did Chevy Stevens really write this because honestly I have given most of her other books 4 and 5 star ratings…but this one I couldn’t even finish! I made it to 27% and just couldn’t go any further. The characters were all so unlikable and annoying and the story was just not written well. I was so excited to get an advanced copy and I do truly thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press but unfortunately this was a major miss for me.

Loved, loved, loved The Hitchhikers. One of the best books I've read in quite some time. From the first page to the last it kept me on the edge of my seat. I can highly recommend this book. I am going to check out the other books by this author.

The beginning of this book really had me hooked, i was so intrigued. Then towards the middle and end it felt like i'd read a lot but yet nothing had really happened. I did enjoy it though and overall it was a good read.

Oh Chevy Stevens, what has happened? I have read several books by Stevens, and I have enjoyed them all. I was SO SO thrilled to see her new release and be approved. I dove into this one with high expectations. I am very sad to say that I was already disappointed by the 15% mark. This book did not feel like I was reading a Chevy Stevens book. The only thing I enjoyed about it was the era, the 70's. The descriptions of that decade were very well done from the clothing, camper, current events, food, etc. The characters and plot were just annoying, unrealistic and repetitive. I wanted to punch Alice and Tom. They were so stupid. "Ocean and Blue" got on my nerves as well immediately. I wanted to love this and tried hard to do so, but I just couldn't. I would not recommend this book at all.
