I've said it before, and I'll say it again now--DC is doing excellent work in the middle grade comic space. Their series of young reader graphic novels are a great entry point for young superhero fans who aren't ready to dive deep into comic lore. These graphic novels feature lesser-known or completely original characters that appeal to long-time comic fans and newbies alike. (Primer was a particularly huge hit with my students this past school year.)

Misfits of Magic brings together a roster of DC characters (most of whom I did not know) for a summer camp at the library. Along the way, they team up to investigate mysteries. Gives some lowkey Scooby Doo vibes, in a good way. The art has kid appeal. I can see this being a hit with my students.

Fun and mysterious! I don't read much from DC, but I like the magical characters best. The art was cute, the characters were likeable, and the story was interesting. Great read for kids.

First you have to be able to let go of cannon. This is a great story, but while you will see hints and recognize who the character is, they are by no means the same age perfect matches to their original DC self. That being said this was so much fun. A couple kids need a new summer camp and they are going to the local library to be taught by Zatanna. So many familiar faces pop up and it was a plastic seeing all the Easter Eggs.

Rikki and Ross are orphaned kids sent to a summer camp for magical kids while the monks watching over them get a little break. They've put other summer camps out of business, so they don't have the highest hopes, but this camp is different: first of all, Zatanna Zatara is one of the camp counselors, and some of the campers? Boston Brand, or as he's better known, Deadkid; Danny Cassidy, the Blue Devil, and June Moon, who shares herself with a powerful sorceress called The Enchantress. Right about now, folks familiar with DC Comics may be smiling right about now; for those who aren't, trust me: these are popular characters. Smith nails the essence of each character while making them accessible to younger readers. The summer camp setting is hilarious, with all of the friendship-bracelet-making and magical cloak-dyeing that one can expect to find at a magical summer setting. A fun mystery brings the group together and bonds the new friends with jokes, teamwork, and a social media post or two thrown in. In all, a fun summer read that kids will get a kick out of, whether or not they're familiar with these characters. Put it on your shelves!

In DC’s MISFITS OF MAGIC, after Ricki’s pursuit of magical investigations has led to them being banned from pretty much every summer camp, she and her brother Ross find themselves at a summer camp in the library with other supernatural teens. After observing some suspicious activity, they band together to solve a magical mystery. The mix of DC characters from across different eras paired with great artwork and clever humor makes a great intro to the DC universe while also appealing to those already familiar with the characters.

Overall, the story and characters are good. It's easy to tell that humor is at the forefront of the title which is fine. However, unfortunately the unique art style can be quite jarring and for me, it detracted from my reading experience. It's definitely worth a read and I am rather curious to see where the story will go if there are future iterations.

I really enjoyed this story. There was a bit of nostalgia in it as I was around when Blue Devil made his first appearance. I liked the main character even though she had some self-doubts to work through. I would have liked to have gotten to know her brother more than we did. Maybe the next book! I think school-aged kids will like this and adults will get a kick out of the throwbacks to the adult versions of the characters.

This book was great. A cute introduction to some DC characters, though probably more entertaining for avid DC Comics readers. I loved the illustration style--it matched perfectly with the characters' deadpan humor. Will definitely be recommending to my regular graphic novel readers at the library.

DC Comics provided an early galley for review.

This comic for kids takes some classic characters from DC's various eras of publishing and brings them together for a whole new audience. This looked like a fun romp that I wanted to check out.

Reading this took me back to the days of summer vacation as a kid. The artwork has a very clean but detailed style to it (giving me an indy comics vibe). The way that so many of DC's magic-related characters are reimagined works really well for the story too. Long time fans will enjoy the various Easter eggs throughout.

Both the young and young at heart will enjoy reading this seven-chapter comic story.

That was so much fun! I will definately recommend it to kids who love comic books, and parents at the library who want to share their love of comic books with their kids. I have comic book nerd friends and coworkers with children, who try to read books with their kids as a kind of family book club. I think this would be great for that.
