How far would you go to solve your own murder? Or should I say how much procedural detective work would you do while your brain is a ticking time bomb ready to explode from a traveling aneurism? But that doesn’t roll off the tongue as nicely, does it?

If you can suspend disbelief the entire time you’re reading this book, it’s quite enjoyable. It’s not that good, but it’s enjoyable. I mean, having an exact countdown to the moment of the exploded aneurism is a bit much. That’s either a prognosis from an extremely precise doctor or a convenient plot device.

Jet is an awesome protagonist, and Billy is an equally awesome supporting character. Everyone else can kick rocks, and I wish them slow, agonizing demises.

The concept was great, but it would have been better if 50 pages were trimmed. This shouldn’t be a 400 page book. It dragged some for me as we got into the Emily background story. The ending was unfulfilling. I was hoping for a lot more. The motive felt weak and I didn’t buy it.

I am an HJ fan, but definitely not my favorite of hers.

Oh, and if you have a 10% chance of living or a 0% chance. Take the 10%. Please…

Thanks to Netgalley and Ballentine for this eGalley! I was interested that Holly Jackson was going to publish a book for adults since A Good Girl's Guide to Murder was such a popular YA series. However, I think her first dive into adult writing still felt YA with some of the characters acting like teenagers at some points. The first 2/3 of the book were better than the last 1/3.

Review

I have read every other book by this author and rated them five stars. So with this one, I have a feeling it's going to be the same. The description in the beginning. This guy seems interesting. It's Halloween? That explains the costume! Her sibling and his wife and baby arrived. A rejected proposal? The whole conversation wow and then her sil is really her old best friend, that's tense! Her dealing with everything and going home and then getting hurt? Billy? She woke up? The hospital and dead in a week? Tough choice. Her choice and looking at the crime scene. The reunion with her dog and who is billy to her and did her ex do this? Damn billy didn't know. The footage, so heartbreaking. Her running to Billy after that disaster at breakfast. Going to see that guy and woah mom did what?!?! Woah. Them destroying that site! Luke and the dish towel. Omg what?!? The confrontation and everything. Talking to Nell and the open mic. That's so messed up. Interesting reaction. The losing feeling part and the result of it. JJ did the loan?? Wtf is with the pills and Sophia? Of course her dads pills! She was probably poisoning him to get luke the business. Her confronting her! What happened to Billy's mom? Luke and her conversation. Them breaking in and the names not being there? The fraud that is happening in that business, wow. Woah wtf. The fire. A drone? That was so sad and the whole like/Henry/JJ situation. The police station and the cat thing? Nina is the cat? The dots are connecting like crazy now. The messages. That memory. The whole scene with Emily and her death. Looking at his mom's stuff and already wet?!? Did luke kill Emily? Luke? Woah Sophia telling Billy about what happened with his mom. Her getting arrested trying to reach Billy. Luke did the fire? He's so sus! She's gonna die in jail? JJ and the conversation. The voicemail and the letters. Him getting her out of jail. He did do the fire and he killed her? Luke isn't his? Woah. Who is his dad then? She put a tile on him. No no no. Not him. Who did it? Oh no! The letters. She actually died? Omg. Woah, everything falling into place. I suspected it but wow. A gun? Luke? The death of him. Wow that was crazy, I love Holly Jackson so much!

Quote: "'and who thought it would be a good idea for an alcoholic to live above a bar?' 'he did.'"

I rated it five out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-ARC of this book!

WOW. I loved this book so much. The premise was so creative and a nice change from the many run of the mill thrillers out there (not that Holly Jackson ever writes those). I adored Jet--her dark humor had me laughing out loud. The mystery was great but what was even better was the writing of the characters. I loved Jet so much and was hoping that perhaps the ending would play out differently than I assumed it would based on the setup of the story. If this is what Holly Jackson will do with adult thrillers, I hope she writes more!

Oh this book was so much fun! I always adore Holly Jackson’s books and was very excited for a non-YA option.

As always, exceptionally fast paced, great twists, an excellent cast of characters- I couldn’t put it down!

ARC Review of Not Quite Dead yet. What a damn honor. Thank you NG & Thank you SO MUCH Holly Jackson!

Truly. An honor.

“She blinks and the light doesn’t come back”

This book was intense. First book to ever make me cry. It was so. So. Intense. No words in the language I speak can describe the masterpiece this book is. Read it. This is a contender for my top 2025 book.

Wow. This book was emotional, gripping, endearing, anxiety inducing and compelling.

How she handled this with satire wit and a need for justice while knowing this was happening was heartbreaking to read. The character development was incredible. She’s funny and witty as all hell even as the days go by.

A must read for thrill seekers, plot twist lovers & the ones who love to stay up all night flipping through pages. I couldn’t put this book down. Hold on to your seats because the rides and twists this takes you on, even the best thriller readers can’t imagine.

When I had to take a pause to be a human, I couldn’t stop thinking of the book. I couldn’t stop thinking about Jet.
And I don’t think I will for a long long time.

Holly, pat yourself on the back. This was truly a masterpiece.

Holly Jackson does it AGAIN!! Making me irrationally (I like to this rationally) attached to fictional characters.

Jet was laugh out loud funny at some many points in this story. She really showed that dying does not need to be devastating at every stuff, but she also kept it real and showed that it is really tough when you are facing your own mortality.

Not Quite Dead Yet had me really thinking through all the suspects and not figuring it out until just before the end.

10/10 would recommend.
10/10 to Holly Jackson.

I would say this is my favorite Holly Jackson but that's equivalent to a parent to being asked to pick a favorite child. Impossible and unfair.

Thank you to Netgalley and Random House for an e-ARC copy!

jesus christ, this book raised my blood pressure

this book was incredible. i didn't think holly jackson could wow me again after how much i loved AGGTM but she really did. this might be my favorite book of the year (def my favorite thriller).
i just love holly's writing so much. she just makes the most interesting and real characters. i really felt for jet and rooted for her. billy absolutely stole my heart. i'm just so impressed with how she writes her characters. not many authors can actually make their characters feel so alive and have so much chemistry.
ugh i just loved this and can't wait for holly to pop out with another book (hopefully another adult thriller because she really seemed to shine this way).

thank you netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for the review!

🔨.˚○ • ° WORDS WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE AMOUNT OF TRAUMA THIS BOOK PUT ME THROUGH. Listen when I looked and saw a new holly jackson book coming I was like YASSSSSS (Even though I only read the first good girls guide to murder) So I applied for the ARC in hopes of receiving it. And GUESS WHAAATTTT, lil lucky ole me did. I started reading this and it took me awhile I will admit. The start was SLOWWWWWW and I mean slower than my grandmas old Toyota from god knows when. So yes, I put it aside let it rot for a couple days. Until today. when I sat my butt down on my sofa. Opened my digital copy of this (already preordered the physical book btw-) AND READ. JUST READ. And holy smokes what a amazing decision that was because I binged this in 5 hours and finished the entire book. And I have far too much to say.

🔨.˚○ • ° Was this a adult thriller? Yes. Did I still read it as a teen and enjoyed it? ALSO YES. Now I want to say the plot of this book was beyond captivating I will admit we had some romance here, a little mystery here (nah wdym we had alot of that) BUT YOU GET THE POINT!!! From the start to the end I feel like everything was so planned out to have me gawking in the middle of the book, TO FULL ON SOBBING AT THE END BECAUSE GOD. When I say I barely ever cry in books. I swear this book made me cry even though it is not supposed to be emotional. I SWEAR I THINK I WAS JUST CLINGING TO THE LAST BIT OF HOPE I HAD. But yes, I ate the plot up. I loved the slow chemistry between the two main characters even though it got to nothing. AND EVEN THO THE MAIN CHARACTER GIRL ANNOYED ME AT TIMES. I still felt like this plot was cleverrrr oh my wordddd. So if you are reading this review to see if the plot is worth it.. YES MY DEAR BEAUTIFUL VIEWER. IT SO IS.

Billy.
MY POOR BABY. OH MY GODDDDD.
No one will understand the absolute bundle amount of love I have for this man. The amount of times I FELT PAIN FOR HIM, should be enough to send me straight to therapy for wanting to help fictional characters who are words on paper ;)
Did I also think he was acting way too young for his age at times? pssst- yes.

And I know the name choice isn't the best. I don't think none of the name choices in this book were good actually. It's giving white country bumpkin names. BUT ITS OK. ITS OK GUYS. I think that's the point. 🤓☝️(The story does take place in Vermont after all.)

🔨.˚○ • ° Now while talking on things that bothered me, I WILL ADMIT. I FOUND THE MAIN GIRL A BIT ANNOYING. A BIT RECKLESS. Reminded me of her far far distant cousin *cough cough* Pip. BUT DID I HATE HER? Not really. She did have a great sense of humor I'll give her that. Lowkey was LOLing at how dark some of her jokes were LMAOOOO- I also didn't like the fact that the ending reveal was kind of like a whiplash with all the answers. (Well not like all but like most of them) BECAUSE IT JUST HAD ME GAWKING WHEN I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF CRYING AT THE PREVIOUS PAGES. Like I get that was the point but SHEEEEESSHHH you couldn't have been anymore blunt Mrs. Holly Jackson??!??!!

🔨.˚○ • ° ANOTHER POINT I DO WANT TO MENTION IN THIS LOVELY RANT OF A REVIEW IS THAT- If you are a younger reader looking to read this do take note that there are some subjects like Tax and business related things THAT COULD BE VERY CONFUSING!!! (Unless you are just a smarty pants like me and could understand it) AND WHILE IT WASNT THAT MUCH OF IT! I do think that it is worth noting if you want to read it since some things in this book are for a mature based audience. ‼️

"Not Quite Dead Yet" by Holly Jackson is an absolutely mesmerizing rollercoaster of suspense, emotion, and razor-sharp storytelling. From the chilling first line to the final, gasp-worthy twist, this novel delivers a reading experience unlike anything I’ve read this year.

Jet Mason is a heroine like no other—flawed, funny, heartbreakingly real, and utterly unforgettable. When she's given a death sentence after a brutal Halloween night attack, the clock starts ticking. But instead of succumbing to despair, Jet decides to do the unthinkable: solve her own murder before it happens.

What unfolds is a breathtaking countdown filled with secrets, betrayal, and razor-edged suspense. Every character is layered and suspicious in the best way—Jet’s privileged but fractured family, her enigmatic ex, and even her sister-in-law who used to be her best friend. No one is safe from suspicion, and no detail is too small to matter.

But what elevates this thriller beyond others is its emotional core. Jet's reflections on her wasted time, her regrets, her longing to matter—they’re raw and relatable. Her bond with Billy, the childhood friend who never left her side, gives the story a quiet, aching heart that makes the stakes feel even higher.

This is a mystery with soul, a ticking-clock thriller that asks not just whodunit, but what have I done with my life? It’s as thought-provoking as it is propulsive.

Ten out of ten. I didn’t just read it—I devoured it.

Jet’s life is falling apart. At 27, she’s dropped out of law school and moved back in with her family, unable to follow through on anything she starts. It’s Halloween, and while her family is busy running their annual fair, Jet ditches cleanup duty and heads home—only to be violently attacked while eating a festive cookie. When she wakes up 36 hours later, she’s stunned to learn she has just one week to live.

Faced with the choice between a dangerous, last-ditch surgery or accepting her fate, Jet finally decides to see something through. She refuses the surgery—but she’s not going down without answers. Determined to use her final days to uncover who tried to kill her, Jet dives headfirst into a pulse-pounding mystery filled with buried family secrets, old wounds, and unexpected revelations.

This fast-paced thriller is more than just a race against time—it’s a story about grit, redemption, and the strength it takes to face the truth. Jet’s journey is both heartbreaking and empowering, and readers will be hooked until the final, shocking twist.

UGH this book wrecked me. (SPOILER AHEAD) I kept hoping and hoping that somehow she wasn't going to die and then when it happened I was so, so very sad. I kept making different guesses about who the murderer was, and suspected it wasn't who we were all supposed to think it was. Well done book, the ending made me super sad though.

my favorite thriller of the year so far,all holly Jackson’s books have been 4 or 5 stars for me,she never disappoints! I haven’t read a book about someone trying to solve their own murder, the last few chapters had so much going on I literally couldn’t book this book down!

3.95!

Holly Jackson, the way your mind works amazes me.

I am so conflicted on what to rate it because this could have been a four-star with the way it was set and how it was written, but also it just was not as good as her other books. And keep in mind I rated this not on my Holly Jackson scale where I compared the enjoyment I derived from this book as compared to the others and how impactful it was. Thus, coming to this rating, it would be higher if it's compared to other thrillers, but I feel like Holly Jackson can do better. There were some areas where it fell short, but it wasn't a bad read at all. In fact, it was very enjoyable. But the thing is, it just didn't captivate me like all her other books do. Like, I consume her books, and the pacing was very weird with this one. Like, when I would read it, I wouldn't be able to stop, but when I did stop and put it away, I would have no motivation to pick it back up again. It just wasn't as captivating as it needed to be, and it did affect my reading experience. Because usually, a Holly Jackson book is so alluring that I read it within two or three days, but I think this one took around two weeks?? The writing style, however, was something that I liked. Holly Jackson just has a way with words, she makes reading every one of her books enjoyable. Like, you cannot be bored with her writing style. She makes everything so interesting, and it's always so refreshing reading her works, so that was a plus side of this book because it was definitely something I needed.

The concept of the plot was also very interesting. Like, that is the thing that made me want to read this book besides the name of the author. It basically is the story of Margaret, or as everyone refers to her as 'Jet', who gets hit on the head by someone very brutally and miraculously survives, but only for the next seven days due to some complications with her skull. So she is determined to find out who 'murdered' her in these seven days. And I mean, come on, who wouldn't be itching to read this book? The way it set everything up was really well done. I liked that it also focused on the characters and their development and yet still managed to weave a clear path for the plot. It was drawn out, but maybe a little too much? Where things started to go in circles, and I just wanted them to wrap it up. Because there came a point where nothing was happening, and I already had no motivation to pick the book up, and I knew if I kept it down, I wouldn't pick it up. So I had to power through it. It may also be because I had figured out who did it. So, very, very surprisingly, for the first time ever, I predicted both of her plot twists. But I don't believe that it invalidated how well they were set up and how nicely it wrapped the story up. It was a very interesting take.

Our main character Jet is witty, sarcastic, rude (like that girl from Rachel Price), but those are the effects of her growing up in a very dysfunctional family and losing her sister, which caused her to be carefree, a commitment-phobe, never doing things on time, and always relying on "I have my whole life left." So Jet then gets a reality check by being attacked and being stripped away of that opportunity. And honestly, that hit hard because almost everyone procrastinates, but this just showed how literally the thing that you expect the least can happen, and you can be stripped away of the choice to do it tomorrow. Anyways, I liked her determination to solve the murder. Her sarcasm really saved this book for me because it made some of the scenes in this book better, and the lengths that she was willing to go through, because she had nothing to lose, added a nice touch to this story. Billy, in a world full of boys, everyone needs Billy. He was amazing, so supportive and always there for Jet when no one else was. I really liked his character, and I also liked how Holly created their dynamic to be so powerful that every interaction between them felt so natural!! I enjoyed that.

SPOILERS!!!
SPOILERS!!!
SPOILERS!!!
SPOILERS!!!

Okayy the side characters?? I didn’t like Jet’s mother, she drove her other kids away because she obsessed over one, and when that kid died, she moved on to the other one, driving the third away even more. The dad was nice but felt irrelevant at times, even though he brought a main thing to the plot. Luke, he was my very first suspect. Things just felt too weird around him. Him killing Emily (his sister) was surprising, but I figured out that he wasn’t the killer as we moved forward with the story, because I found a new suspect, a better one and also an unlikely one, YAYY!! I followed my own rule (never stick to your first suspect and point towards the most unlikely but also slightly likely one). In this case, that was Billy’s dad. He was too nice for his own good, and he was always conveniently there, so I knew that he murdered Jet. But it was just a theory, and I didn’t really have any evidence. So I started to think, why would he do that? Anddd we move on to Sophie (Luke’s wife??) who, in Jet’s words, is a massive cunt.

She was poisoning her father in law because he wasn’t giving Luke the company. And I thought, why would he not give him the company? Because I think Jet’s conclusion was that he was greedy? But that didn’t feel right. So, I connected this dot with Billy’s dad being the murderer, and the common denominator was that he was Luke’s actual father and he was doing it for him. Honestly, when I thought of it and the way I thought this through, it felt easy, so I thought that this can't be the twist. And I honestly wasn’t fully sold on it because there were still things missing from this. But when it did happen, I was shocked that I was right, lmaoo. But I liked that she was able to fill the gaps that I had in my theories, which made the overall reveal better.

So out of the three twists, I predicted the two main ones but didn’t predict the minor one (Luke killing Emily).

Also, the letters in the book were really well done. They somehow made me feel emotional—especially the one for Billy and the one for the dog.

Overall, this was a very well-thought out book that fell a little short for me, but I enjoyed it!!

It’s been a long time since a thriller truly thrilled me, but this one absolutely delivered. With a compelling and layered lead in Jet Mason, a premise that feels refreshingly original, and a mystery that pulls you in deeper with every chapter, this book kept me hooked from start to finish. I found myself constantly turning the pages, eager to uncover the truth alongside the characters. Smartly written and emotionally resonant, with an ending that will absolutely get to you, this is the kind of story that reminded me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place.

Holly Jackson's first adult novel is simply very well written. It has the hallmarks which made the Good Girls trilogy so popular with a deeply moving and compassionate heart. You cannot help but feel for our main character on her search to find her killer. It was certainly a lot more darker than I expected it to be but extremely enjoyable. A must read for all mystery lovers.

Omg this was quite the ride! Imagine someone attempts to take your life, you survive but are told you will be dead within a week due to the head injuries you sustained. You are now on a mission to solve your own murder. The FMC uncovers many secrets throughout her journey and it had me HOOKED.

It took me a little bit to get into the book at the beginning, but oh man, once it hit about 30% I was IN IT and could NOT put it down. This is actually my first book by Holly Jackson and I am now a fan. I will be reading any other adult thrillers she comes out with in the future.

I enjoyed the FMC's personality, the way she handled the situation and tried to lighten the mood with her humor. I loved that the entire story came together very well at the end. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend.
