"Not Quite Dead Yet" took my breath away... Literally, when I sobbed through the ending I knew was coming, and the ending I didn't. My partner woke up to me losing it first thing in the morning on my birthday in a panic.
Him: "What's wrong?!"
Me: "My book... it's (snot) soOo (hiccup) good."
Him: *Laughs in relief*
I've been insufferable since this book was announced, and even more so when I found out I was lucky enough to get to read it early. And let me tell you... it did NOT disappoint.
Jet has seven days to live, and she chooses to spend them solving her own murder. Once she starts digging up decaying secrets and razing her relationships, everything she thought she knew about her life is flipped on its head. There are twists that will keep you guessing at every turn and the pacing is (MUAH 🤌🏻) perfect.
Despite what might seem like heavy subject matter— what with the imminent death of a loved one and Jet's loss of ability to control her deteriorating body— this book was quick-witted and hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing at the dark humor Jet used to make light of her horrifying situtation, and that made the book all the more poignant and emotional. On top of that, it was tragically romantic. The dynamic between the main two characters is to die for (...no pun intended). The headstrong, ambitious, and brave girl who would do anything it takes to solve her case paired with the doe-eyed guy who's been in love with her since they were kids and who'd follow her to the ends of the earth... yeah. I can't say any more or I'll start crying again.
"Not Quite Dead Yet" is Holly Jackson at her best. It's a phenomenal thriller I'll be thinking about fondly for a long time.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.

OMG. I’m still trying to process everything! I’ve never read a book like this before but the premise immediately grabbed my attention and wow, I was not let down. What a rollercoaster this book was from beginning to end. There’s not much I can say without spoiling anything, but I will say I LOVED Jet. What a funny, resilient, and brave character. You couldn’t help but root for her and cheer her on as she worked to solve her own murder and she was such a trooper given the circumstances. She will definitely go down as one of my favorite main characters, and she brought me an insane amount of laughter and tears through her journey. I appreciated everything happening with the side characters in addition to the main plot as it supported the story well and enhanced it perfectly. I love a book that can keep me guessing and this one did that and more. My mind is still reeling but i loved this one and can’t wait to read more by Holly Jackson. Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC of this book, this is my first Holly Jackson novel, I have not read any of her YA work.
I think anyone reading this book should go in blind it makes the beginning that much more exciting. The premise behind the story was really interesting and will stick with me for a while. The pacing was a little off for me of when we received relevant clues vs red herrings.
I also wanted to be more invested in the characters - I think their struggles hit less hard through the YA-like prose. But even if emotion wasn’t fully there in the moment for me, the lasting impact is.

Not Quiet Dead Yet by Holly Jackson was just that - another iconic Holly Jackson book. This being marketed as a little bit different from her other books, and having such an intriguing concept, I really did not know what to expect coming into it, and overall it definitely did not disappoint!
Firstly, I was a little confused by the targeted age classification. This being Holly’s first adult thriller, after having written 5 Young Adult books and a novella, I expected it to be a little… different? When in fact the tone and voice felt pretty similar to her other books. Jet’s voice (and Billy’s) felt pretty young to me, and I struggled to imagine them as 27-year-olds. As a young 19-year-old myself, I actually didn’t mind this and found it easier to connect to the characters this way. The majority of Holly’s audience is young and wil probably feel this way too. But overall I found it a bit anticlimactic and unnecessary that it was marketed so heavily as an adult thriller when the only real difference is the age of the characters and amount of language (which only seemed to be a tad bit more than her A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series). I realize the age of the characters makes it unfeasible to call it YA, but I just expected something different from the description.
The pacing was fairly well done. I found myself less excited to read it closer to the beginning than the end, and I wish the last 100-so pages reflected the rest of the book, because the heartbreak and tension of the end was what made it so wonderful. The depth of character and emotional themes in the book built up as it went on, and I loved that. My love for the book, for Jet, was a slow burn in itself, and it was truly beautiful.
The concept (of a woman solving her own murder in 7 days before she dies) is incredibly unique! Albeit unrealistic, it gave the story the little something special it needed to stand out. Holly may not be an expert on brain aneurysms, but the whole thing felt slightly medically inaccurate. But then again, most of the audience (including me) is not medical experts and will not care, because it provided the stakes and tension necessary,
The first chapter was a little too short and too fast. While I was still trying to figure out who was who, the murder occurred. I would have appreciated some more time to discover who Jet and Billy are, before the situation and countdown dials everything up to 10. That being said, I loved the romance, Jet and Billy really are the dream team. This being Holly’s first childhood-best-friends-to-lovers-slow-burn-he-fell-first-and-harder (which is my absolute favorite romance trope by the way!) It was just so cute and meaningful. I perhaps needed more reason to believe they were in love (or at least that Jet was getting there) because I never got to see how close they were as kids. That didn’t stop my heart from breaking when Billy lost her.
I was annoyed by the constant remarks (often wittily, which fit Jet’s humor but not the tone of the situation) reminding Jet of her death. In a realistic situation I can see how a wave of sadness might overcome her every time she’s reminded it’s not a normal week but in fact her last week ever, but each and every time it tended to bring me out of the story.
Without the “little something special” of this book (aka the 7 day countdown, the message of the story, Jet’s death, the romance, etc) the mystery and plot itself feels a little lackluster, messy and unrealistic. If I had just read a mystery involving Luke’s parentage, Emily and Nina’s deaths, Henry’s accident, etc, I would not have enjoyed it as much. But that’s the great part about this book, that that part is not the only part that makes it worthwhile.
It had a wonderful ending, filled with the perfect amount of action, suspense, plot twists, and poetic heartbreak. I sobbed more than one time over Jet’s letters, the way Billy talked about her after her death, and how he let her die believing it was him just to ease her. Jet’s death was so inventive and so needed to make the story come full circle and have the perfect amount of gasps and heartbreak customary of Holly Jackson’s books (but seriously Holly, why must the book couples always end in heartbreak, and this was by far the worst one!). I appreciate she didn’t buy into the overdone sappy cop-out idea of somehow undoing the consequences for Jet’s death, that was classy and also very very important to the impact of the message.
Let me say, I did throw out the idea to myself that Billy was the killer early on, I thought it was the best twist that was shocking and fairly believable, but I held out hope because of how wonderful he was and how important he was to the message of the story. Now I’m beginning to think it was intentional on Holly’s part to make me think this way. Let me say I’m glad I was wrong. In fact, I think I got the best of both worlds, the shock of thinking he was the killer and the relief that he wasn’t.
Now onto the message of the story. The “life’s too short, appreciate it before it’s gone” thing tends to be cheesy, but I actually think it was done in a tasteful, not cliched way to actually felt meaningful! The idea that Jet was waiting for her life to begin hit a little too close to home, and will probably be relatable for majority of readers. It’s incredibly hard to make someone cry reading a 400 page thriller, but Holly managed it this time, and I can guarantee I won’t be the last one who feels this way.
The author’s acknowledgments were really what solidified my feelings on the writing of Jet’s character. Holly showed how much she loved Jet so deeply, how she felt for her, how important she found her strength and determination to be impactful to the readers. And after that sad and traumatic ending, where all I did was feel utterly sad for Jet and Billy, I knew where I ended up. Jet had come so far from the girl I felt so indifferent about in the beginning. I thought she needed someone to fight for, that she needed to show more emotion about her death and desire to love her family. And she got there, eventually. Jet is a stubborn girl, fierce, a little out of touch with her emotions regarding her death, using humor to cope, and it makes sense that she would react in this way, stubbornly solving her murder and reverting to anger to make it all feel better. I appreciate how Jet acknowledged her growth throughout the story, because that’s how we all felt too, like watching a child grow up. That’s what character development is. But not only that, she stayed who she was - the funny, stubborn, fierce girl who Billy was so fond of. Really, I got to see her the way Billy did (literally), in the end.
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group, and of course Holly freaking Jackson for this great ARC. I’m sure the world will love it.

Hmm this book was interesting! I didn’t necessarily love it but it was different! I do like Holly Jackson’s books. But this one felt more juvenile than her young adult books.

The concept/premise is primed for a story you wanna binge, so it makes for a quick and propulsive read: woman with only days to live after a violent attack that should've immediately killed her but didn't (yet) tries to wrap up life by solving her own murder.
Manages to be darkly funny along the way, and adds a pretty good justification for questionable sleuthing techniques. Also, given that it's Jackson's first book for adults it works well for the story that several of the characters do have more of a questionable/unpleasant side than one would see in the Good Girl's Guide series.
I liked that the crumbs for the whodunnit are well laid out in advance so the resolution doesn't come out of left field, although the denouement did feel, to me, rushed and a bit lacking in a character's motivation for some earlier actions.
That said, the formatting for part of the end, with handwritten letters, was cool and a good nod to Jackson's past novels' inclusion of different forms of writing/voice.
For these reasons it's a 3.8/5 for me; great quick summer read!!

Holly Jackson knocked it out of the park with her adult debut.
Jet lives in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Her parents aren't the most popular people due to the construction business they run. When she's attacked inside her home on Halloween night, she decides to figure out who tried to kill her with the help of her childhood best friend turned stranger.
WOWWW. When I first started this book, I wasn't the biggest fan of Jet. She really turned me off but as I kept reading I understood her more and more. She is packed with layers and each chapter pulls one back piece by piece. I loved the rekindling of Billy and Jet. Their relationship was UGHHH. Holly really knows how to make you fall in love with her characters.
This story is riddled with secrets and backstabbing. I loveee small town drama, and this book was filled with it. I was constantly suspicious of everyone because you truly don't know anyone's intentions. Everyone is keeping secrets, everyone has something to hide. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's fast paced and gripping. Starting on Halloween set the scene so well.
Overall, this book is excellent. If you liked her other releases then you will love this one!

"Oh, come on," Jet said. "You can tell me. I've known you forever. Who could be a better wingwoman? Let me help─it's my dying wish. Does she work at the bar?"
Billy fiddled his fingers, stared down at them too hard, acting strange and un-Billy-like. Which was all the yes Jet needed.
"She does, doesn't she?" she hissed. "ls it Allison? It's Allison, isn't it? You wrote the song about her?"
"No," he coughed. "It's not. The song isn't about anybody. It's just a song."'

" You sure you're OK to do this? You don't look─"
"─I'm not dead yet," she sniffed, wiping her nose on her sleeve.
"No," Billy whispered.
"Not quite." Jet forced out her old man laugh, gruff and breathy, stopped because it hurt her head. "You ready?""
"Have you done this before?" Billy whispered.
"What?"
"Crimes?"
"No," Jet snorted. "But I've watched TV, so..."
LITERALLY ME BECAUSE I'VE READ HOLLY JACKSON BOOKS, I know how to get away with murder because of her
Jet walked over to the gate, stepped in front of the taped-up camera, and flipped it off. She’d only said it as a joke, but maybe she really was having fun. Billy too, joining her in front of the blind camera, raising his shirt up, flashing the pale flesh of his tight belly, even giving it a nipple.
˗ˏˋI LOVE HOW SHE STARTED CALLING BILLY'S APARTMENT HOME☹️
She moved the cursor to the URL box, started typing, one finger to one key at a time. 𝘍 𝘢 𝘤
"You're typing like someone called Margaret." Billy smirked.
"Funny." She smirked back, stuck out her elbow.
But there was something worse than all of that put together.
That she was going to die while Billy hated her.
That was worse.
"and I can't die knowing that you hate me, because I─"
˗ˏˋSTOPPP WAS SHE GONNA SAY SHE LOVES HIM?? I'M ACTUALLY CRYING WHAT
˗ˏˋTHE LETTERS TO HER LOVED ONES ACTUALLY MADE ME CRY, except for Sophia's, that made me laugh in between sobs
Don't be scared to love someone else, Billy.
And ─ most important ─ don't be scared to be loved back.
Because someone will love you back, Billy, I promise. And they'll figure it out much faster than I did.
Love you
(and I do, I really think I do.)
Jet xx
Tears stung at the corner of Billy's eyes. He'd had to do that twice. Hold the woman he loved n his arms as she lay dying.
˗ˏˋDid NOT expect is to be Jack that did that to her, wild.

"Why?" Billy still dlidn't shake. "Why are you sorry?"
Dad lowered his hands, pressed them against his chest, crinkling his dark suit.
"It was when we arrived at the construction site, after you'd found the phone, the hammer. was watching you, Billy. Saw the way you looked at Jet. It's the same way I used to look at Dianne. I didn't know."
"That I loved her? That I'd loved her every single day since I was a litle boy? That she was everything to me?"
˗ˏˋTHE LAST PART OF THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT😭
'And, as ever, the most important thank you belongs to one person. Ben. Unlike most of my book couples so far (oops sorry), we actualy are endgame.'

Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an ARC for this book!
As with all of Holly Jackson’s books, this story kept me interested and I loved it. The ending was not predictable to me and there were several plot twists throughout. The author did a good job transitioning to Adult Fiction without losing her writing style. I am curious to see if she will continue writing for older audiences or if she will return to YA.
The reason I went with 4 stars instead of 5 is because Jet and Billy felt very Pip and Ravi in my opinion. It would have been nice to see a different dynamic, or to not necessarily have any romantic subplots.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this book.
This was such a fun read and I was feeling all the emotions as I read this. Definitely kept me guessing and I was locked in on this book. I haven't had a chance to knock out and of the YA Holly Jackson books on my TBR yet, so this was a nice introduction to her writing style. I loved the characters and haven't read anything else quite like solving your own murder, so it was so interesting to see it play out.
Definitely going to prioritize checking out some of her other books now!

Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson.
As a fan of Holly Jackson's YA novels, I was looking forward to an adult fiction title. However, this book read like a young adult book. I had to doublecheck the character's age and was frustrated that as a 27-year old she acted like a bratty teen. The wording and sentence structure was choppy. It felt like Jackson was trying to write in the style that a teen would talk and it didn't translate into prose. The premise was what intrigued me most about this book, but again it wasn't executed well. So many things seemed impossible- who has a traumatic brain image and wakes up jumping out of bed hungry and eager to chase a killer? The ending was rushed, wrapped up in one chapter as a dissertation of one character to another. Overall, this book just didn't work.

I received this ARC from NetGalley. Thank you, NetGalley!
With how much I loved the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, I was expecting this book to be amazing. The 3rd book in that series is one of my favorite young adult book of all time. And when I heard that this was Holly Jackson's adult debut, I was very excited. However, this book disappointed me in many ways. Let's use the CAWPILE rating system to talk about the book.
Characters - I did like the main character's personality and humor. I know many readers will find her abrasive and even annoying, but I quite liked her. Everyone else seems to like Billy, but I thought he was bland and boring. The side characters were fine. The main characters had some depth but not a ton. It's strange - I think I would have enjoyed them more if they had more depth, but then the mystery wouldn't have been the heart of the novel and it would have been more like realistic fiction. I also would have enjoyed it more if the characters had less depth because then the focus would be more on the mystery. So basically, they had an awkward amount of depth.
Atmosphere - Not much to say here. I think reading this book in the fall might make the most sense since the "murder" happens on Halloween night.
Writing - This was probably my favorite part of the book. I LOVE Holly Jackson's writing style. She can make literally anything sound good. I also chuckled out loud a few times.
Plot - The plot was just okay. I was hoping the ending would go off the rails like some of her other books, but that didn't happen. It was very mundane (and even sad!). I suppose she didn't think she could have a crazy plot twist like her YA books since this was supposed to be an adult novel, but because of that, nothing really stands out.
Intrigue - I suppose I was intrigued enough to keep reading it, but with the book clocking in at 400 pages, it was hard to keep the suspense going. Once it was pretty obvious what the mystery was going to turn out to be, I didn't care as much about it. Although I will say that I didn't predict the killer.
Logic - Some things felt forced and like amazing coincidences. Sometimes it became hard to suspend my disbelief, but there was nothing too egregious that took me out of the book.
Entertainment - Overall, this book was just fine. If I were using Jeremy Jahns's movie rating system, I would say this book is forgettable in T-minus 1 day. Yep, already forgot.

**Features:**
- A murder mystery with a ticking clock
- The main character trying to solve their own murder
- Complicated family dynamics
- Small town setting
**Synopsis:**
Jet can never finish what she starts. At least, that’s what everyone seems to think. But Jet has time and she just knows one day she’ll prove everyone wrong and accomplish something big. That is, until a brutal attack leaves Jet with a catastrophic injury that gives her only a week to live. Jet now only has 7 days to finally finish her greatest challenge: solving her own murder.
**Thoughts:**
As soon as I saw the premise of this book, I just had to pick it up! While I didn’t feel like it ultimately reached the same level as A Good Girl’s Guide to murder, it was still an intriguing story that Holly Jackson was really able to bring home at the end. The first thing you should know before picking this book up is that it has a pretty slow start aside from the attack on main character Jet. Pretty much every character (aside from Billy) is pretty unlikeable, including Jet, and it takes a while for the mystery to start unfolding. However, it is well worth pushing through this first part as the rest of the book is hard to put down!
In addition to having a mystery with a ticking clock, this story is also set in a small, tight knit town where almost all of the characters are closely connected. Things promised to get messy from the start and I was not disappointed! Though I never grew to ‘like’ Jet and wish she had shown a little more growth, I came to understand and respect her over the course of the story. Everyone else around her except for her friend Billy are pretty awful in different ways and readers who are triggered by toxic family dynamics might want to avoid this read. I risk spoiling the book if I say more, but this book is well worth a try!

As someone who has read most of Holly Jackson's backlist, this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, so I was incredibly excited to receive the ARC. With this being her adult debut, I had pretty high expectations. And it almost certainly delivered. Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson follows Jet, a woman in her late 20s who feels like she's wandering around life a little bit aimlessly, who nearly gets killed on Halloween night and now only has 7 days to solve her own murder. And that's all I want to say about the premise of this book because it's so much more exciting to go in blind beyond the basic premise.
Although this is Holly Jackson's debut adult novel, it felt just as fast-paced and thrilling as her YA novels. In a way, it reminded me of "The Reappearance of Rachel Price" with the number of twists and turns and family secrets that kept getting thrown my way as I was reading. I had no idea which way the final twist was going to go in the end (although I never guess them so take that with a grain of salt) so my jaw DROPPED when I realized who the killer was.
My one "complaint" I would say with this book is that it's supposed to be an adult mystery, but in a lot of ways it still reads YA. The only things that distinguish it from her YA writing in my opinion are the older main character the using the F word much more frequently than necessary. However, that wasn't enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story and I definitely recommend this book to anybody that loves Holly Jackson as well as mystery/thrillers that have a lot of family drama.
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and NetGalley for the advanced reader's copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book had some heavy topics for a young adult novel. The plot was suspenseful with the weeklong time line and what Jet was up against. The family dynamics were intense and clearly shaped Jet and her life in a lot of ways. I loved how Billy became such an important part of the story and how the relationship between him and Jet changed from childhood to adulthood. I really thought things were going to turn out differently at the end of the week but the ending of this story was … shocking. The plot twists were not something I figured out or saw coming. I’ve been a fan of Holly Jackson’s previous books and this one delivered as well.

Thank you NetGalley and Random House for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

From the Moment I heard about this book I knew I was going to love it, and it was absolutely brilliant!
At the beginning I was unsure, I found the writing style and the main character a little more childish than I had expected, but the plot was good. I could tell from the first page that this would be a very quick paced read, which definitely fits the theme.
The middle is were I got hooked. The characters really started to develop and the twists came out to play. While it may seem easy at first, trust me you'll want to continue because nothing is as it seems. The twists in this book are well done and thought out, it was hard to put down.
The ending blew me away! The characters were so well done, I really loved how much growth they had and the emotion put into this. Not only were the characters fantastic, the writing really turned into something beautiful. I feel this is some of the Authors best writing and the story felt so original for the mystery genre.
A 5⭐for sure

I am literally in awe of how incredible this book was. I absolutely devoured it in 2 days because I had to keep reading every chance I had to learn more.
Jet, our FMC gets attacked on Halloween and survives long enough to get to solve her own “murder.” I absolutely loved this twist and found it really engaging for the story line. There are so many twists and turns in this book that it’s so hard to predict what will come next. I pride myself on being excellent at solving thriller and crime novels but I didn’t see this ending coming at all!
Thank you Net Galley, Random House, and Holly Jackson for this ARC.

This was quite a ride! Dark, thrilling and twisty. What would it be like to solve your own murder? Jet Mason is about to find out. The blows to the head didn’t kill her but the blood clot forming in her brain certainly will. She has seven days to work out who hit her. Along the way she uncovers so many secrets, is no-one innocent?
I enjoyed the dark humor of Jet, I probably would make as many jokes if I knew I was about to die. She went through the five stages of grief throughout the book and I was so happy she found peace and happiness right at the end. The murderer really could have been any of the characters. The only issue I had was how quickly Holly Jackson tied it all up. We didn’t get to see how everyone fared once the truth came out. I suppose that’s life though, never really tied up with a bow.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I am now off to watch “A Good Girls Guide to Murder” on Netflix. The book will definitely be better. 😁

Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson is slated to be released on July 22nd. This was a great psychological thriller that I highly recommend everyone to add ro their TBR. This read includes tropes such as Family secrets, Lead character trying to solver her own murder, Small town, Twisty , and Who done it

Jet is the daughter of one of the wealthiest families in Woodstock, Vermont. Twenty-seven years old, and she’s definitely made some mistakes, but at her age, who can't afford a little extra time to figure life out. That is, until Jet is attacked by an unseen intruder on Halloween. In the process, Jet suffers a catastrophic head injury, one that her doctor is sure will trigger a fatal aneurysm in a week. As her condition deteriorates, she finds she is determine to finish one thing - solve her own murder.
I am not a quick reader, by any means, but I found myself with an uncharacteristically quiet weekend, and I finished this book between the two days. It was such an engaging read, that I found myself quickly turning pages until there was nothing left. There was a bit about Jet's head injury that were somewhat far fetched, but talk about an incredible premise for a book. Jet made for such a determined character, supported by her best friend Billy. The chemistry between the two, as well as the interplay of Jet's condition, made for an incredibly wild read. I predicted part of the twist with the ending but didn't expect the rest. It definitely made for an interesting final twist.
