An excellent novel The writer eloquently describes not only the difficulties of bringing to justice the perpetrators of sexual assault and rape but the pain of watching someone you love suffering with dementia. All this against the bleak backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. Adolescent Penny finds the world around her a scary place. She feels that men are behaving inappropriately towards her but her mother who is having her own struggles with life thinks she is misreading the situation. interspersed we meet adult Penny who is on a jury deciding the fate of a man accused of rape.

This started off quite shocking, I would definitely recommend you check your trigger warnings before reading this. I found it to be quite sad really with elements of a real understanding of human behaviour. A good read, thank you for early access.

(ARC review) — Thank you to author J.A. Baker and publisher Boldwood Books. I received an Advanced Reader Copy for the April 2025 release of 𝑇𝘩𝑒 𝐺𝘰𝑜𝘥 𝘋𝑎𝘶𝑔𝘩𝑡𝘦𝑟 in exchange for my honest review. This is a psychological thriller told in multi POVs and dual timelines. It’s a very emotional book and you can feel the lingering impacts of trauma and see it from the victims lens. Will Penny get justice? Slow burn but I was vested immediately and read it very quickly, you’ll keep turning the pages because you want to see it unfold and whether justice is served. You’ll loathe some of the characters though. Check Trigger ⚠️ before reading there are some heavy topics in this book. Rounding up to 4!

After the slightly graphic first chapter I felt uncomfortable with the further reading. No shade on the author. The subject matter wasn't for me. She's a good writer, though.

First time read by this author and enjoyed the style of writing very precise and fast moving - kept me engaged and a few twists and turns with a decent ending

I recently finished reading “The Good Daughter” by J.A.Baker and I have to say it was a really enjoyable experience. The story revolves around Penny, who is dealing with a traumatic event from her teenage years. Things get even more intense when she comes face to face with her attacker where she is part of a jury.
I was pulled right into Pennys world and the descriptions were so vivid. The plot was full of unexpected twists and kept me guessing right until the last page.
The heavy themes like trauma, drama and justice all added to the feel of the book but the topics were handled really well.
Overall I found the book a fantastic read and definitely worth picking up.

Really enjoyed this one! Fast paced and detailed, the story kept me hooked. Not sure if the assault in the first chapter needed to be so detailed, but that’s my only issue.

Having a daughter now of my own, this book hit a bit different. I was shocked by the twist in this book and the ending! The way it all came together was marvelous. Fabulous book!

This was such an interesting read. The book flips back and forth between mother and daughter as well as past and present. The story was very interesting and with the different aspects it makes you question things. I enjoyed it but make sure to check triggers as this does have hard topics.

Teenager, Penny was being stalked by an unknown man. Her family didn't believe her, and she was assaulted in her bedroom. Terrible things happened in a short space of time, her father died suddenly, and their house was set on fire, severely injuring her brother.
As an adult, she is called to serve on a jury, and the man on trial is her attacker. She vows to get revenge and make sure justice is served.
This book was a little slow for me, but was twisty and picked up eventually.
I totally understood Penny's determination to get justice for what happened to her and her family, and eventually it was served, but not in the way intended.
There are some really horrible characters in this book, extremely unlikeable!!
3/5 stars from me.

JA Baker is a must read author for me. I just finished The Good Daughter. As I expected, it was an entertaining thriller.

Thankyou to NetGalley, the publishers and J A Baker for the opportunity to read an advanced readers copy of The Good Daughter in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I thought the author has delivered another good read. The storyline flowed well and keeps the reader turning the pages to the ultimate conclusion.
Worth a read for fans of the genre.

Wow what an amazing book. It's starts straight away. Even after reading the prologue I could tell this was going to be great. The story focuses on Penny and how an attack as a teenager causes her to one day aspire to get justice. Her chance comes when she is elected for jury duty. When the man on trial is no other than the man who attacked her years before. You cannot help but really connect with Penny. The author really makes you empathise with her. I myself wanted justice for Penny. There are plenty of other atrocious things faced by Penny and her family. The chapters look at Penny's teenage years and what came about. It also looks at modern day Penny. I liked how the author alternates between the two timelines. This is a very emotional book and looks at how trauma can sit deep. It also looks at courage and how getting justice is so important. I would realy recommend this book. I enjoyed it so much it didn't take me long to finish. I was dying to know how it would end. The ending was amazing. I can't wait to read further works from this talented author.

She will have her day of reckoning... As a teenager, Penny Collins always tried to be a good daughter. Until the night she was brutally attacked as she lay in her bed. The assault, from a man she knew all too well, traumatised Penny. Worse still, after her family refused to believe her initial fears about being watched, Penny told nobody, afraid her family would be convinced she was making the whole thing up... Great read! Wow!! How the rich get away with everything!! So true! This book had suspense, murder, mystery, abuse, child molestation, gaslighting, and some shocking twists and turns!! The story was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book! It was well worth reading! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

Penny has a terrible secret.
I took a real dislike to her mother who Penny ends up caring for.
Some parts of the storyline seemed a little far fetched but overall a decent read.
Tragic and emotional.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
