This one was a cozy, warm, witchy hug just like her previous book, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. The side characters (the residents of the inn) brought just as much fun and heart to this story as our main characters, Sera and Luke. Poor Sera lost most of her magic trying to save her guardian, Jasmine, years back and is desperate to be restored to her full power. Luke shows up, and very begrdugingly gets pulled in to helping her try to accomplish this task. They have some banter throughout, but the truly funny and heartwarming interactions happen most between them and the other residents of the inn. They are such a band of quirky characters, and are all monumentally different from each other, but they make for the most amazing found family. There's also a previously dead rooster who just won't go away and a witch trapped as a fox after a curse backfires, and they were probably my favorites lol. Sangu truly knows how to wrap you up in a warm hug via her characters and the whimsy you get to experience throughout her magical stories. I absolutely adored this story.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was the book that got me back into reading fiction as an adult years ago and for that I’ll be forever grateful! Sangu Mandanna’s style is so cozy and warm yet humorous and empowering and I can’t get enough! Her middle grade novels are also lovely.
A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping has been one of my most anticipated reads and when I received the eARC I was almost too overwhelmed to start it because of how much I loved the first book! This book definitely explored much darker themes and has heavier plot points that push the boundaries of “cozy.”
I enjoyed Sera’s character quite a lot, I think her journey with growth and loss were extremely raw and realistic despite this being a fantasy world. Something I think Mandanna does masterfully is writing resurrection and rebirth as an inevitable outcome to death and destruction; there is always hope whether the characters acknowledge it or not.
I don’t think I agreed with the ending of this book, because it wasn’t really a happy ending per se. I do understand why it ended the way it did but my heart hurt for Sera. The romance in this book definitely takes a back seat and the plot focuses mainly on the political intrigue of the coven and the found family aspects which I am not complaining about in the slightest!
I’d recommend A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping to folks who enjoy cozy fantasy with substance, fans of a diverse cast of characters, and benevolent zombified animal sidekick enthusiasts!

This is one of those books that left me a little sad when I finished, simply because I'll never get to read it for the first time again. It's warm, whimsical, and the best kind of magical. The enchanted inn reminded me of Howl's Moving Castle, charming and full of personality. The characters are just as delightful.
Each of them is so important to the story (and to me). They all bring so much heart, humor, and depth. I adore them all.
From the very beginning, I was absorbed into the world and wanted to read straight through. I had to pace myself so l wouldn't finish it too fast! It's a cozy, heartfelt story with amazing magic, the perfect amount of romance, and the kind of found family that makes everything feel a little brighter. Highly recommended.

Sera Swan was the most powerful witch in Britain when she resurrected her great-aunt Jasmine from the dead, lost most of her magic, befriended a semi-villainous talking fox, and was exiled from her Guild. Sera is left helping Jasmine run an enchanted inn in Lancashire, living a cozy but hectic life with limited magic. When she finds out about an old spell that could hold the key to restoring her power, she wants to seize it without the Guild knowing. Luke Larden is a handsome, magical historian who may be able to unlock the spell's secrets. He has no interest in the zany shenanigans of the inn or in Sera, but agrees to help with her spell. He might be getting attached, and Sera might be learning that she doesn't have to do everything alone.
We open with the events leading to her expulsion from the Guild, a group of old-fashioned wizards protecting magic from "normal" people as well as those deemed unworthy. Those are largely immigrants, and Sera's parents emigrated to England from Iceland for her mother and India for her father. Neither parent was excited to actually be a parent, so great-aunt Jasmine came to England from India to raise Sera. Therefore, as difficult as it later was to burn out most of her magic, she couldn't regret resurrecting her as a teen. Fast forward fifteen years, and Sera is keeping up the inn and the motley crew that calls it home.
We have Jasmine, who is disabled and worries about Sera, Clemmie, whose curse rebounded on her and left her a talking fox, Nicholas the Ren Faire knight who always wore armor and spoke like a knight, Sera's nephew Theo from Iceland, and Matilda, who grows vegetables and lovingly bickers with the local farmer who deliver what she can't grow. And Roo-Roo, the rooster skeleton that got animated along with Jasmine. Add to this chaos is Luke, a stiff researcher, and his younger autistic sister Posy, who doesn't know she must hide her magic, and we have lots of silly shenanigans at the inn. In addition to fun games between the children, garden disasters, and the search for components to a spell that would help Sera regain her magic, there are loving moments of connection between them all. Each carries wounds and prickly emotions, but in time, it's obvious that they all bring out the best in each other. We don't see all of the others' stories, just the pieces that touch on Sera's life and how she sees herself; while she sees the best in others, it's harder for her to do the same for herself. This book has its romance and its charm, with a fitting ending that puts the characters right where they need to be.

"Families share a name, apparently, yet here we are."
This book is, in short, worth the wait.
Of the two books I’ve now read from this author, I’ve come to know that I can count on her stories to feel like a warm hug. From the found family to the romance and whimsical magic, her books feel healing to read.
Sera and Luke are SO cute together. Sera, a bit jaded from losing her magic, matches his grumpiness for a lot of the book, yet at the same time she never loses hope. The proximity brought from Luke staying at the inn allowed their connection blossom in a way that felt natural, and I loved watching Luke learn to let his walls down around Sera and the other residents.
The true star of this story is the found family. Each wacky character was lovable in their own right, from Nicholas the modern knight, to Roo Roo the zombie rooster. Theo and Posy were both so precious, and I loved how he immediately became another brother figure for her. Everyone at the inn unfailingly accepts Posy (and Luke) into their lives, and it was so heartwarming to watch unfold. And I utterly adored the side romance between Jasmine and Matilda. Matilda alone is an absolute ICON, but I loved how she pined for Jasmine and it was so cute watching that love confession happen.
I was so invested in Sera’s quest to reclaim her magic, and while I have mixed feelings about how the ending played out, I can appreciate why she chose to do what she did. Albert was such a maddening villain, and I enjoyed getting to see Sera have the opportunity to stand up to him for the first time in 15 years (BIG SPOILER HERE: I would have liked if she could keep her magic somehow, especially after the work it took to get it back, but thematically I get why that couldn't happen)
Overall, this book is absolutely one that you NEED to add to your list!

Just finished A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna and my cozy little heart is full. This witchy fantasy was so worth the wait.
Found family? Check.
Self-acceptance? Check.
Slow-burn romance that made me smile like a fool? Big check.
I loved how these characters made space for each other in all their messy, magical, realness. There’s beautiful mental health rep, diverse representation, and enough warmth to melt your insides.
Also…a talking fox. And other delightfully quirky surprises.
Would I recommend? Obviously.
If you’re craving something that feels like a hug in book form, this one’s it.

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping was one of my most anticipated reads for 2025 and I’m so happy to say that this book lived up to my admittedly high expectations. If you loved A Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, you will love this book!
A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping is a cozy, witchy fantasy novel with a strong romance subplot. This whimsical story follows Sera Swan, a 30-something once-powerful witch who runs a magically enchanted inn with her great-aunt, and Luke Larsen, an aloof magical historian who inadvertently finds himself and his sister long-term guests at the inn.
A Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is one of my favorite books of the last few years. A Witch’s Guide captures the essence of what I loved about Very Secret Society and explores similar themes of belonging and found family, while still managing to tell a distinct, cozy fantasy story. And I loved every second of it!
At its core, A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping is a story about a delightfully quirky cast of oddball characters (including a zombie rooster!) who find each other when they are most in need and the beautiful, caring community they create together. Mandanna brings each of these characters to life and writes about the quiet, ordinary ways they care for each other with beautiful tenderness.
I also loved the slow-burn romance plot, even if it felt a little thin at times (I’d say it’s more of a romance subplot, than plot). I loved the slow way Luke and Sera open up to each other and how they both learn to practice more self-compassion by seeing themselves through the other’s eyes.
The depictions of Sera's struggles with depression and burnout were wrenching. I also appreciated the author’s attention to diversity and the care with which she handled sensitive topics— including representations of depression, burnout, autism, and limb differences. Mandanna’s writing is such a strong example of inclusion done well.
Overall, I loved this book and I’m sure it’s one I will return to again! I can't wait to see what Mandanna writes next.

The dedication to A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping reads: “This one is for Past Me, for all those times she kept going. Future me finally gets it.” I think this is the perfect introduction to the book, which ended up being the cozy and heartwarming story I didn’t know I needed. I identified with Sera Swan so much. Her story of being one of the most powerful witches in the country and then losing most of her power will speak to all the “gifted” kids who were told they could do anything when they grew up but ended up anxious and depressed because they feel like they’d squandered their potential. It’s described as “whimsical,” and it is, but it’s more than that. It also speaks to the importance of found family and having a place to belong, and that society and institutions have a responsibility to individuals. I love this book so much.

I’m going to say it. This may be my favorite read of 2025. If not in the number one spot, then definitely in the top three. It was deeply magical, cozy, heartwarming, adventurous, and ALL THE THINGS! I am having trouble putting into words how much this book meant to me. I had a smile on my face and tears in my eyes the majority of the time listening to this book.
This book has a deeply rooted message of being accepted for who you are, exactly as you are. I am the mom of a nine-year-old who is autistic and to see Posy be so beautifully portrayed and accepted for who she is touched me so deeply that I was misty eyed. I am forever changed by the beauty in this story.
It wasn’t just Posy. It was everyone. I would go to war for these characters. I would stand in front of charging enemies. I love them all on a very deep level. I would read a million books with them as the stars. I never want to leave this world.
A really refreshing aspect is the reverse grumpy/sunshine trope! It’s always the MMC who is the stick in the mud, but in these pages, we find Sera Swan, who would literally give up every last thing she has to her name for the people she loves but is going to have RBF while doing it.
The takeaway from my love letter to this book is to please pick it up. Jump into this world and these loveable characters with everything you got. There is even a loveable zombie chicken. Need I say anymore.
P.S. If you are an audiobook lover, go ahead and grab this one on audio too! The narrator is pure perfection and swept me away with the way she brought these characters to life.

🎧 Narrator: Samara Maclaren 🎧
This was my most anticipated release this year. I preordered this book back in 2023, almost two full years ago!
I really love Sangu Mandanna’s writing. I was so ready to dive back into this cozy magical world. The tone of this one was different than I expected. It was darker, more serious, and had higher stakes than what I went in expecting.
That being said, the quirky cast of magical characters was still there and I loved them all. The inn being a character itself was really endearing. A place that calls out to the people who need somewhere to land. Don’t we all wish we had that at some point in our lives?
The pacing of this one was a little off for me. I found it dragging a bit in the middle. Sera and Luke’s slow burn, opposites attract romance was equal parts heartwarming and awkward 🤣. And the ending left me unsure about how to feel.
My favorite parts of this novel are by far the found family, enchanted atmosphere, and magical mayhem. These things are what I was so looking forward to as I waited for this novel to release!
🎧 Samara Maclaren is an absolute gem in her narration here. I loved her in the last one and that feeling carries on here.

I received an ARC copy of this book through NetGalley. This was my first Mandanna book, overall I throughly enjoyed the cozy atmosphere, the funny and diverse cast of characters, the heartwarming plot and character development. I consider myself a fan of the cozy fantasy genre and this book certainly fits that bill. If you enjoy books that feel like a warm hug, make you believe in everyday magic, and that you find yourself chuckling to in bed at 12am - I would recommend this book!
My main drawback from giving this a five-star rating is the relationship between Sera and Luke. Don’t get me wrong - I love their dynamic, but I personally wish I had more connection between them, and I felt some aspects of the romance were a bit flat.

4.5⭐
Sangu has crafted something truly special with this enchanting story. There's an undeniable magic woven into every page that makes you want to curl up with a cup of tea and never leave this cozy world she created. Honestly, I could have happily read an entire book just about the daily rhythms of their inn life. Sangu's writing makes the mundane feel absolutely captivating.
This book is found family TO ITS CORE. If you're someone who devours stories about chosen families and the bonds we forge beyond blood, consider this essential reading. Every single character wormed their way into my heart, and I found myself laughing out loud more times than I could count.
Sera Swan is wonderfully complex—a former magical prodigy now running an inn after losing most of her powers. Her grumpiness is endearing rather than off-putting, and watching her navigate this new chapter while surrounded by the most delightfully eccentric cast of characters is pure joy.
The romance takes a backseat here, which worked perfectly for me since the heart of this story is truly about family. What I loved most was watching everyone at Batty Hole Inn slowly but surely chip away at Luke's carefully constructed walls.
The side characters deserve special mention because they truly elevate this story. From Jasmine's steady warmth to Nicholas's knightly dedication (complete with daily armor wearing), from young Theo's sweetness to Posy's leaf-collecting wisdom, and Clemmie's sassy fox commentary—each brings their own magic to the inn's atmosphere. These aren't just background players; they're fully realized individuals whose relationships with each other feel genuine and lived-in.
If you fell in love with Sangu's previous work, this will absolutely capture your heart again. It's comfort reading at its finest—warm, funny, and ultimately hopeful about the families we choose and the magic we make together 🥹
Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group & NetGalley for this e-ARC.

If you are ready for another magical cozy romance - look not further, Sangu Mandanna has done it again!
Short blurb: Sera, once a powerful witch who now feels lost without it, is on a search for a spell that will bring her magic back. Exiled from the Guild for a spell cast in the past, she's left running a magical inn that seems to keep unwanted guests out and lures those lost and kind, in. In comes past acquaintance and icy historian Luke - who inwardly is unwillingly to help, assists in the decoding of said spell. Pair this storyline up with quirky Inn residents, a mischievous fox and too many magical elements that will warm your heart? You need to read!!
This story is not so much about romance, but learning to love yourself and see yourself in a different light, overcoming emotional barriers, fighting for the greater good (yourself and others), and finding a family even though none of them have the same last name.
THOUGHTS:
The premise and setting of the story screams cozy UK vibes at an old inn with too many fun side characters that add so much warmth to the book.
Nicholas walking around in knights armor all the time was amazing and roo-roo is too special
there was such a diverse range of topics covered in this story, ranging from jasmine's club foot, to posy being autistic, characters not having relationships with their parents, depression, to founding families doing things for themselves instead of caring for the needs of everyone - none of it felt forced, all of it was handled and described and done so so well
the romance of the story is quite minimal and I really enjoyed this - specifically because Sera finding love was not what solved her problems, it was an additive that brought happiness to many
Sera's magic journey - her thoughts on who she is without her magic and how everything comes to conclude at the end was very well done - there was a bit of foreshadowing for parts of the spell that i felt were incredibly rewarding in watching her grow and how her vision of herself changed
Some good quotes:
“It seemed at first glance like ridiculous theater, unnecessary, and a bit silly, but at the heart of it, weren’t they just a handful of people trying to be good to one another ?”
" I cant believe I'm about to say this, but, er, have you considered that magic isn't everything?"

SHE IS OUT TODAY - JULY 15 2025!!

Such a sweet cozy fantasy!! I loved Sera Swan, and saw a lot of myself in her. I do wish we got some further conclusion of her relationship with her parents. I know they weren't a large part of her life, but imo if they're going to be brought up at all, and still be alive, some kind of resolution to that would have been nice. Otherwise, I loved the ending! I also love how its vaguely connected to tvssoiw, I'd love to read more set in this universe!

Thank you so much to Berkley Books and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC!
I read “The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches” last year and was so enchanted by that book that as soon as I realized Sangu Mandanna had another cozy fantasy romance coming out, I immediately listed it as a must read for 2025. And I am so happy to say that not only did this book not disappoint, it’s my new favorite book from the author!
Sera Swan is a formerly powerful witch that lost most of her magic due to using a resurrection spell to revive her great-aunt. Years later, now exiled from the British Guild of Sorcery, Sera is resigned to upkeep of her family’s inn with the help of her great-aunt, zombie chicken, a talking fox, and an array of other hilarious side characters. However her desire to regain her full powers persists, and an old spell she has stumbled upon might just be the key to do it. Luke Larsen, a witch who also is a magical historian with the Guild, arrives at the inn with zero intention of making the odd place a permanent stay for him and his younger sister. But he can’t seem to stay away from helping Sera with this old spell… and perhaps he can’t even stay away from Sera herself.
The highlight of this book is its plot and its writing, which are the embodiment of sipping the warmest drink, and snuggling up in a blanket, and holding magic in your hands. The descriptions throughout this story about the inn, made it feel so alive to me as the reader, and the feelings of the characters who were truly struggling and battling their own demons hit me right in the heart. The pacing of the story, as well as how it all culminates was perfect to me, and I can’t think of anything I would have done differently.
The humor was also so on point!! The best way I can describe it is that it’s dry, deadpan, sarcastic, witty, VERY British and honestly? It had me cackling multiple times throughout the book. There are multiple sections of dialogue that I’ll have to highlight when I get a physical copy, just because it had me giggling so hard.
And the ROMANCE. I love Luke and Sera together!! The development of their feelings was slow and I was being fed, crumb by crumb, but my god were those crumbs delicious. I truly felt that they became who they needed to be on their own, but also supported each other so well.
And lastly, the found family in this story. I truly wish I was a resident at this inn so I could experience the daily life there with this cast of characters. The familial dynamics between all of the characters added an extra layer of coziness to the story, and the willingness to show up for each other in ways that counted, made my heart hurt (in a good way)!
All in all, it truly was such a pleasure to be able to read this book early, and I can’t wait for more people to check it out. It absolutely has become my favorite book of the year thus far, and I can almost guarantee that it will be in my top 5 by the end of it.

Sangu Mandanna is now officially my goto for amazing witchy books! I absolutely loved The Very Secret Society of Irregual Witches and I am ecstatic that it was not a one hit wonder.
This book is full of fantastic fun creative characters. The story is magical, obviously, as well as heartwarming and so entertaining.
I loved it!

I adored The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches so when I saw Sangu Mandanna was coming out with another book, I was so excited. This book was so such a cozy fantasy romance and just so heartwarming! I love how this book had so much to offer. For someone who doesn’t usually enjoy fantasy books, this book offered just enough to keep me engaged and interested and I just loved the characters. Sera and the rest of the whimsical characters made this one so enjoyable, and I loved Luke and the dynamic between him and Sera. There was a lot of great representation in this book, which I really appreciated and I love the found family in this book so much!

Short Synopsis:
Sera Swan used to be one of the most powerful witches in Great Britain. But after doing a forbidden spell that drains the majority of her magic she's left with nothing but a magical inn and a group of found family that want to help her reclaim her magic. When given a second chance to reclaim her magic, she takes the help of a childhood friend and sparks begin to fly.
General Thoughts:
This book was super cozy and so strongly built around the found family theme. I could not help but feel like this book was a warm hug from a really good friend.
The characters were super well developed, and just felt like people that I knew. I really enjoyed the vast representation throughout all of the characters. I felt like all of the representation was written with care and represented things like autism, physical disability and queerness extremely accurately.
The romance in this book was very sub plot for me, but I was totally OK with that because I felt like the main theme of this book was family and letting go of things that you've lost and trusting others. I feel like the romance was just enough sprinkled in to make it Romantic, but not overpower the overall message.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and it's really very close to which I preferred over the other. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

The coziest little fantasy that made me wish I could jump into the pages.
Sera, a prodigal witch, loses almost all of her powers when she works bring her beloved Aunt Jasmine back from the dead.
15 years later, casted from the Guild she was training under, she's working at her aunt's inn - a place where only people who are in need are able to locate it. The inn is filled with the quirkiest characters, but doesn't draw too much from the story. When Sera learns there is an ancient spell book that could have the answers to returning her powers, she meets Luke Larsen and his sister Posey
This book was so so charming. While Luke and Sera are the main couple of this book, all of the characters really steal the show. Watching the two work together to break the curse upon Sera, you see Luke lose his gruff edge and transform into something softer. The world building was fun without being overwhelming. The setting is so tangible that it makes the reading experience so much better.

This book was sooo beautiful. I already knew it would be good by the very first line: “It was hardly ideal weather for a resurrection of one’s great aunt, but Sera Swan’s magical power, while impressive, hadn’t the slightest influence over the obnoxiously blue skies.”
This story is about Sera Swan, a witch who lost a huge portion of her magic at a young age after completing an extremely depleting spell, and her journey as she attempts to regain her magic and that piece of herself that she lost.
This is a gorgeous story about found family, personal growth and evolution, self-forgiveness, and meeting people where they’re at without trying to change who they are. The male main character, Luke, and the rest of the inhabitants of Batty Hole Inn, all show Sera so much support, respect, kindness, and grace while she gives them that in return as well.
My favorite aspect was the gentle and understanding way Sera and the gang treats Posy, Luke’s little sister. She’s neurodivergent (and not the only character in this book who is) and it’s clear that the world has been careless towards her and Luke, but the second they arrived at that inn, they were received with open arms and deep acceptance of who they were.
This book had me giggling one minute, and in tears the next because it was both hilarious and heartfelt.
Favorite quotes:
“It seemed at first glance like ridiculous theatre, unnecessary and a bit silly, but at the heart of it, weren’t they just a handful of people trying to be good to one another? It was the first thing about the inn that made sense to him.”
“Theirs was a friendship built on the unspoken, shared understanding that you can love the home you’ve made with the whole of your heart and still know the land it’s built on will never claim you.”
