What is it that inspired the digital release of this title, originally published in 1929? I see this book as kitsch perhaps, but not desirable reading material for most. I did have a laugh near the beginning when we learn that the characters are going to play a game in the dark involving the family dagger; of course it couldn't go well, and it didn't. But throughout the story we see trite gender roles, predictable plot turns, and some twenties slang that seriously doesn't work anymore.

I read this book free, courtesy of Net Galley and Bloomsbury Reader. If you decide to give it a whirl, perhaps as a bit of cultural research, get it cheap or free.
