Georgina Harrington got a love of archeology from her father. But after his passing, she struggled to be taken seriously. A single woman in the eighteenth century didn’t have a voice. But she loved to read and write up her research, and she even had some land that her father had left her where she digs. But because she isn’t taken seriously, she used her cousin Percy’s name. The two of them acted like he was the historian and archeologist. He was the writer and researcher. And when Georgina uncovered a crown in her dig, it was Percy who took it to London and showed it as if he’d been the one to discover it.

But then, Percy didn’t come back.

A couple of days could be fine. He was known to disappear for a day or two. But as the days pass, Georgina grows increasingly worried about his safety. She has to go to London to look for him, but she can’t just go by herself. Her brother and his wife decide to go to the city, so Georgina has a reason to travel to London, but she needs to figure out how to investigate once she gets there. Percy’s best friend, and generally irritating person, Alexander Lovett, is also concerned about his friend and the one person willing to take Georgina seriously. He is in on the fact that she is the one doing all the work Percy is taking credit for, so he’s listening to her worries with the seriousness it deserves.

But Alexander knows things. For one thing, he knows about a coffeshop that not only allows women into their secret room, he knows that they could help Georgina find a disguise that would help her move through the streets of London safely. And once she is in disguise, as a man, of course, then Alexander can take her to the bars Percy has known to frequent in London. He introduces her to the female boxer who taught him some helpful moves, and when she sees a cockfight about to take place, he helps with the distraction that allows her to set the chickens free, particularly the fluffy white one that surely wouldn’t have survived its fight.

Eventually Georgina and Alexander find enough clues to figure out who was behind Percy’s kidnapping, but trying to rescue him is a whole new level of danger. And when they find out just how powerful the men are who have stolen her crown, and they realize what their next steps are, it will be up to Georgina, Alexander, and their friends from the London coffeeshop who have to work fast to stop a truly diabolical plan that will level many important English families.

Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case is a smart historical rom com that allows the women of the times to be as adventurous and swashbuckling as the men. The writing is sparkling with witty banter as the two main characters find their way from enemies to friends to almost-lovers. There is even a heroic dog wiling to break into estates for turnips, a trash-talking parrot, and a fluffy chicken who starts a whole new fad among the rich and influential in historic London.

I listened to Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case on audio, narrated by Marisa Calin, who does an amazing job with this story. She brought these characters to life and drew me into the adventure and the romance of this novel. This book is just fun.

Egalleys for Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case were provided by Forever, and a copy of the audio book was provided by Hachette Audio, both through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.

After Georgina’s cousin Percy disappears with her most recent and very precious archeological find, she finds herself in London, relying on Percy’s feckless best friend Alexander to help her retrieve her cousin and her fossil!

This is your classic historical romance, where two people who are against marriage in general or the mechanisms of their parents matchmaking Val to not be interested in each other … but find themselves together and very interested!

I personally really enjoyed Georgina and Alexander and thought they made a great pairing. Alexander was very underappreciated and Georgina eventually sees his value and seriousness. And on the flipside Alex recognizes Georgina scientific work and strives to help her take ownership of her discoveries and ability.

This is the second book in the series, but you can easily jump in right here and move forward.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Marisa Calin and I enjoyed her voice work. She had a good voice for his romance, and she intoned a lot of fun and mischief into her reading. She made the book very lively and a lot of fun.

Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case offers a delightful mix of romance, mystery, and humor, brought to life by engaging narration. It's well-suited for fans of lighthearted historical fiction with a touch of intrigue. The narrator used a variety of voices which was a nice touch

Violet Marsh is quickly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors! Growing up, I loved hist roms that delivered an air of mystery within the story, and Violet does that incredibly well. I loved the delivery in Lady Charlotte and I loved it here

A mystery that keeps you guessing and a romance of misfits. Alexander and Georgina are both outcasts of their own right. Alexander has suffered isolation in his own family for physical ailments outside his control and Georgina faced the stigma of being an educated miss, isolated because of her gender and refusal to conform. These both prove such monumental messages, that one is defined by the actions of their life not their status or appearance. Their romance was a gently growing flame and those sweet tender connections made for a compelling story that I truly enjoyed.
Marisa Calin was a great narrator choice. Her tone is perfectly tuned to historical romance. She has a wide array of emotion that she taps into through the different characters and was fabulous to listen to.

First off, the narrator greatly added to my appreciation of the story and the historical setting. I liked having little bits of real history spun into the fiction tale. The reimagined triumph of women over the limits of society is a popular premise, and well used here. The mystery was just enough to make the romance interesting and plausible. The emphasis on the physical limitation of the male lead was a bit forced, but worth it as this character's arc of healing came to fruition. I enjoyed the personality of the female lead.

"Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case" is a fun historic rom-com that involves main characters who defy convention.

Georgina Harrington is a historian and archeologist, a pursuit considered improper for a lady. And Alexander Lovett is a sportsman and adventurer, as well as the disappointing son of a duke (disappointing only because of the club foot he was born with). And while meddling relatives seek to join them in marriage for their own personal gains, Georgina and Alexander want nothing to do with any plans being made for them.

When Georgina's cousin, Percy, the face of her antiquarian discoveries, fails to show up for a scholarly presentation of her latest findings, she becomes concerned that something must have happened to him. Given that Alexander is Percy's best friend and can easily help an unaccompanied lady navigate the seedier parts of town that Percy was known to frequent, they reluctantly join forces in the hunt for Percy's whereabouts.

What they uncover is much more than either of them ever bargained for. And the deeper they go in digging up the dirt on a conspiracy, the more they come to appreciate what the other brings out in each of them.

While there was a bit more steam than I'd anticipated in a historic rom-com, I enjoyed the story and characters a lot.

Thank you to Violet Marsh, Hachette Audio, and NetGalley for an advance review copy.

Such a fun read! I’m still new to the world of historical romance, but this story was very interesting. There was a great combination of mystery, romance, and humor. The humor! It was a hoot. It was balanced well with quiet, tender moments between the two leads, who each had emotional baggage to carry. The supporting characters were also fantastic. Highly recommend for a fun read if you’re looking to get out of a slump!

The narrator did a really good job of bringing the different characters to life and keeping things lively throughout the story. She set the perfect tone to keep the mystery going and had a great range of accents and voices for the characters.

While this book was not noted to be part of a series, there is a book prior to this one that does provide some history. However, it is not enough that it overwhelms the plot of this current book. This book is a high-stakes very fun, historical romance romp. I very much enjoyed listening to this book and I do hope there are more to come in this 'non' series. The narration was not my favourite and I think it would have been better done as a duet with a male and female narrator instead of just female. At times it was a little hard to distinguish between the characters. I still thoroughly enjoyed this audio book and if you like a fun read with a diverse range of side characters while speeding through mystery and intrigue, then this book is for you.

Big thanks to netgalley and Violet Marsh @violetmarshauthor for a copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.

*3.5 star rating

Our Dear Miss H. Is On The Case is the second in an interconnected standalone historical mystery series with interesting characters, an intriguing mystery and pockets of humour. I was drawn to this title based our FMC's archeological and scholarly interests, and wasn't disappointed. There were elements of close friendship/found family, schemes in the name of amateur sleuthing, history (which I always find interesting in historical fiction), quirky animal companions (and the start of a new high society trend lol), and romance; which was a bit more on page than I expected from a book in the 'cosy mystery' genre but nbd.

I didn't realise this was a companion sequel until after I had started, and while I don't feel like my reading experience was hindered, I could have had a better connection with the characters from the first book who appeared quite a bit throughout Miss H.

I want to recommend this book, but not necessarily the audiobook. I struggled with this narrator's style and delivery choices which unfortunately negatively impacted my overall enjoyment for the story; and I will avoid audiobooks with this narrator in the future. I'm intrigued by the epilogue, which hinted at the direction the next book will take, and wouldn't mind picking it up in the future, but not on audio.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for providing me access to an arc copy in exchange for an honest review. All feelings and statements are my own.

I’m giving this one a 3, primarily due to personal preference and convictions, but I’ll explain my reasoning.
The story pulled me in relatively quickly. There were parts that I felt like I was speeding through or stopped paying attention, but in general I was tracking along with the romance—to be honest the mystery storyline didn’t feel especially strong. I stopped listening at the 70% mark though when I hit the second open door sex scene. The first one was brief, and probably wouldn’t be considered a sex scene by most, but it was definitely spicy. By the second one, I attempted to skim past and realized it was going to be far longer and far more explicit than I was comfortable with. The pacing problems may have been redeemable if I had finished…the writing style was pretty engaging and the narration was well done.

Historical romances with mysteries are quickly becoming a favorite of mine and no one does them quite like Violet Marsh. I loved Georgina and Alexander so much. Alexander was definitely one of my favorite characters in the previous book so I was excited to see him get his HEA. I also felt like this book just brought so much more depth to him and he was just truly the best historical romance book boyfriend. I also love a good female MC that knows she's smarter than everyone else and is just trying to prove it. This had so many twists and turns while remaining lighthearted and fun. I'm excited to see what Marsh does next.

Marisa Calin did an amazing job narrating this audiobook! I loved all her different voices and how she really brought these characters to life. It can be difficult in books like this with all the different accents, but Calin did a fantastic job. I can't wait to listen to more books she narrates.

Throughly enjoyed this novel! Such a fun, cozy, romantic and fun story to read. The story takes us through many silly moments for the main female character, Georgina, whose frustrating cousin ends up flaunting a geological dig item that Georgina discovered, which ends up getting him abducted. Hilarity and hijinks ensue along with the dashing best friend of her hapless cousin, whom she finds herself falling in love with. Super cute, light read. Can’t wait for the next in the series!

ARC/ALC BOOK REVIEW

Our Dear Miss H. Is On the Case by Violet Marsh

Thank you Forever for the free eARC of this book! And to Hachette Audio for the ALC!

SYNOPSIS: “Georgina Harrington should never have trusted her feckless cousin Percy with her most precious archaeological discovery. But no one would take her academic work seriously if they knew it was hers and not her male cousin’s. When Percy goes missing, only Georgina realizes that he is truly in danger. And to find him, she must rely on the help of his infuriating but incredibly attractive best friend.

Although Alexander Lovett is always up for an adventure, he vows to keep his distance from Georgina, who is on his insufferable parents’ list of suitable brides for a future duke. He’s a grown man who can pick his own wife, thank you very much. But he’s surprised to find himself falling for Georgina’s surprisingly bold initiative and independent thinking that save them from more than one deadly scrape. Yet as a simple kidnapping grows into a threat to the monarchy, their smoldering attraction might be snuffed out before it ever has a chance to ignite.”

REVIEW: This book was an enjoyable read, with all kinds of whimsy! I love when a story makes you smile, while also having emotional depth. It blends historical romance with a touch of mystery.

The characters are adorable, and there's just enough drama to keep things interesting without getting too heavy. I liked Alexander as a leading man. He’s not your typical perfect romance hero, and that made him feel real, and relatable in many ways.

I love an audiobook with a brilliant narrator, and Marisa Calin was no exception. Her performance was so enjoyable, and it really brought the story to life.

I haven’t read the first one yet, but I plan to return to it!

A fun read!

Marisa Calin deserves her own tiny tiara for this performance. She gives Georgina that perfect balance of sharp wit and suppressed romantic longing. It’s all very “I wear tweed and solve mysteries, but I’m also accidentally irresistible.” Calin makes every character feel distinct and deliciously dramatic, especially when switching between flustered dukes-to-be, shady society figures, and Georgina’s no-nonsense intellect.
This is the kind of narration that makes you want to sit in a wingback chair with a scone and just vibe.

Georgina’s archaeological brilliance is being passed off as her cousin Percy’s—because patriarchy, sigh—but when dear Percy vanishes, Georgina is the only one who knows he’s in real danger. Enter: Alexander Lovett, the roguishly dashing best friend with a tragic case of emotional avoidance and parents who are very into matchmaking.

Together, they embark on a rescue mission that spirals from “oops, a minor kidnapping” to “oh no, the monarchy might be in danger.” Along the way there are secret societies, ancient artifacts, over-the-top disguises, and just enough accidental hand-holding to make your heart flutter.

The chemistry is all about that opposites-attract tension: she’s cerebral, stubborn, and trying very hard not to be charmed; he’s daring, deeply annoyed by his feelings, and definitely into her brain. The romance simmers under the surface, often eclipsed by plot-heavy mystery antics, but when it finally clicks? You’ll be grinning like a duchess with a scandalous secret.

It's slow burn. It's slightly chaotic. It’s “he touched her gloved hand and now we need a moment to breathe.”

🕵️‍♀️ What Works:
* A heroine who is smart, capable, and actually solves things
* Banter that feels like verbal fencing with a side of longing
* A mystery that goes full telenovela by the third act (in the best way)
* The "don't kiss her / definitely kiss her" energy from our reluctant hero

🤷‍♀️ What Could Be Better:
* The plot does occasionally overcomplicate itself (who isn’t double-crossing whom?)
* The romance takes a bit of a backseat to the mystery until later on
* A few scenes feel like they were plucked from another (slightly more melodramatic) book

If you're here for high society sleuthing, stolen identities, and watching a very independent woman make a future duke deeply uncomfortable with how much he wants her brain (and, okay, the rest of her), Our Dear Miss H. Is on the Case delivers a delightfully eccentric romp.

Our Dear Miss H. is on the Case was such a fun book and I really enjoyed the audiobook narrator. The book was lighthearted and funny with just enough romance and adventure.

Georgina was so quirky and relatable which made the book really fun. I also loved all of the animal characters and the banter between Georgina and Alexander.

Thanks, Netgalley for the eARC.

I want to start off by saying that I'm normally not a fan of historical Victorian era movies like this. I tend to avoid the books too. But I got the ARC for this and listened to the audiobook of it. I really enjoyed it.

The premise of this book is that Georgina's cousin Percy goes missing. Georgina is on the hunt to find him but needs the help of his friend Alexander. Alexander is a future duke and is looking for a wife. Well you see where this is going...

It's funny, cute, and enjoyable!

I’m afraid this was a dnf for me. The description sounded great however I really struggled with the narrator. Her voice I found quire grating and I really disliked the way she overemphasised the last part of words in a sentence and her breathy tone. I found myself focussing more in the way she was speaking than the actual story so I am afraid I had to stop. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.

This witty romcom mystery is a rollicing adventure. Set in the eighteenth century, Violet Marsh has created a comedy of manners that combines romance and wit with comment on societal expectations of the time. While most of the characters in this novel are one dimensional, the main characters are delightful and complex. Georgina Harrington is an archivist at heart. Nothing interests her more than continuing her father's work, unearthing treasures on her inherited land. But as a woman, she has gone from the "care" of her father to that of her half brother, who has a tight control on her estate. She is frustrated by her inability to live on her own lands, let alone control her own funds. Women scholars are not taken seriously, and so she must rely on her male cousin to present her work as his own. When Percy goes missing, she must search for him but needs to rely on the help of his exasperating but attractive best friend. Alexander is the more complex character. Marsh weaves in the society's expectation of the perfect male heir with Alexander's physical deformity. Alexander deals with his physical disability with style, becoming a sportsman despite his reliance on a cane. He must overcome not just physical pain, but hide the rejection and abuse from his father that ensued. Over the course of their search, the two become more and more attracted to each other. But this is a sweet love story with just a little spice. There are a few compromising situations and racy ideas, but nothing explicit. The mystery to find Percy becomes an adventure fraught with peril. The story is complete with disguises, carriage chases, gun play and dungeons. What starts as a mystery, soon becomes melodrama. But it is told with such wit and whimsey that readers will giggle through the whole story.

I alternated between text and audiobook advanced copies that I received from the publisher through NetGalley. The audiobook, narrated by Marisa Calin, is charming. She is a delightful actress, whether she is voicing, women, men or even roosters. This is one novel that is even "better as an audiobook."

readers will want to know that although the book wasn't labeled as part of a series, it is actually a sequel to last year's Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man. There are references to a few past events that made it obvious that this was a continuation. But as is the case in many series of this nature, this is a seperate love story which happens to have some of the same characters. The book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, but I loved this one so much that I plan to read the first book some time too.
