Okay, Katie Mettner, I see you! Dark Web Investigation sucked me in from page one and did not let go. Fast-paced? Absolutely. High stakes? You bet. Romance with sizzling chemistry? Oh yes, and then some.
Kenley Bates is exactly the kind of heroine I root for: smart, fierce, flawed, and so determined. After losing her best friend and part of her leg in a tragic ATV accident, she’s turned her grief into purpose, hacking her way through the dark web to expose wrongdoers and fight for victims who can’t fight for themselves. That alone would’ve had me hooked, but then enter Jude Mason, ex-military cybersecurity badass, and boom: we’re off to the races.
Their chemistry is instant but not forced, and I loved how their partnership felt like two puzzle pieces clicking into place, each bringing strengths, each carrying scars. Also, I have to give major props to Katie Mettner for how she writes disability: respectfully, naturally, and in a way that never feels like a "lesson" but instead like life. Kenley is capable and resilient, and her limb difference is just one part of who she is, not her whole story.
Plot-wise? This thing moves fast. Between Kenley and Jude trying to outmaneuver a creepy mastermind called “The Servant,” the constant threat of danger, and a cyber-threat that could literally go global, there’s no time to breathe (in the best way). I was flipping pages like a maniac and loving every second of it.
The balance of action, techy intrigue (that even non-hackers like me can follow), and romance was spot-on. And I love that this book kicks off a new series but still includes cameos and connections from Katie’s Secure One crew, so you get fresh faces and fan favorites.
Bottom line: If you like a story with brains, heart, danger, and a couple worth rooting for, Dark Web Investigation is your next read. A thrilling start to a series I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on!
Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Katie does another great job with this one. I was so excited to keep the Secure One story going with this Secure Watch series. The best part is if you have not read her Secure One series, you can dive in with this spinoff series. It does have more impact if you have read the other series so if you have the chance to do so, you can get more of what you love there!
I loved the characters of Kenley and Jude. This gives you a wonderful connection between these two characters wrapped up in fast paced thrill ride of a story. I love the way they are fighting for the greater good in these stories. These characters have purpose and heart and that is what is going to pull you in as a reader.
I cannot wait to read the rest of this series! I'm so fascinated by the new Secure Watch world and the things that I learned about the dark web from reading this book. Keep them coming Katie!

An intriguing romantic suspense. It keeps one turning the pages. I did skip over the intimate scenes. Always a delight to read about a capable woman. I look forward to reading more in this new series. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

Kenley Bates is a cybersecurity expert by day, crafting code to shield corporations from digital theft and ransomware. By night, she transforms into 51ckl3 (Sickle), a digital vigilante navigating the dark web. Her mission? Toppling Staun Bril, the company behind the Neo Chase ATV—the machine that caused the tragic accident claiming her best friend Gabriella's life and leaving Kenley as a right leg amputee. With countless others harmed by Staun Bril's negligence, Kenley is driven by a relentless need for justice, aiming to make the company answer for its deadly products.
While scouring the dark web, Kenley stumbles upon a terrifying discovery—a site that not only sends chills down her spine but also paints a target on her back. Despite her meticulous efforts to erase her digital footprints, she realizes she has been tagged and is now hunted. Desperate, Kenley reaches out to her friend Delilah, who just happens to be on her honeymoon. In Delilah's absence, Jude Mason, an ex-military ally, steps in. Although Jude is a stranger, Kenley trusts Delilah’s judgment. Jude races to Kenley's side, and together they uncover a chilling revelation—Kenley has stumbled upon a program that poses a global security threat. The adversary behind it is cunning and relentless, dragging Kenley and Jude into a perilous game of cat and mouse.
As they delve deeper into the mystery, a powerful attraction ignites between them. Yet, with both facing their own inner demons, they must question if their burgeoning relationship can survive amidst the chaos of their dangerous mission. Can they break the code, outwit their adversary, and navigate the treacherous waters of both their professional and personal lives? The clock is ticking, and failure is not an option.
From the moment I started reading "Dark Web Investigation: Secure Watch, Book 1" by Katie Mettner, I was completely captivated by the intricately crafted characters and the suspenseful narrative that unfolded. Katie Mettner's ability to develop well-rounded, compelling characters is truly impressive. Each one is imbued with relatable flaws, making them not only believable but also deeply engaging. As I followed their journey, I found myself rooting for them to conquer the perilous mission they faced while also cheering for their personal growth and evolving relationships.
The dialogue throughout the story is another standout element for me. Whether it’s the main characters or supporting figures like the junkyard owner, Archie, each voice is distinct and authentic. Katie Mettner masterfully captures the nuances of conversation, adding depth and realism to the story. This attention to dialogue immerses me in their world, making each interaction feel genuine. The characters’ exchanges often reveal subtle aspects of their personalities, adding layers to the narrative.
What particularly struck me was how Katie Mettner handled Kenley’s disability. It’s portrayed with sensitivity and realism, woven seamlessly into the narrative. Kenley’s experiences, from tending to her limb to the vulnerability she feels when Jude assists her, are depicted with such care and detail that she becomes profoundly real. This aspect of her character is not overwhelming but rather an integral part of who she is, enhancing my connection to her.
The dynamic between Jude and Kenley is beautifully executed. Despite knowing each other for only a brief time, their chemistry is undeniable. Even though I don't frequently read romance, the way Katie Mettner writes their relationship is captivating. She manages to convey deep emotions through simple gestures—a glance, a touch—highlighting the profound connection between them. The internal struggles both characters face regarding their age difference and personal issues (no spoilers here) are thoughtfully explored, adding layers to their relationship and making it feel genuine. But let me clarify, it’s not merely a spark that ignites between them; it blazes!
Despite its focus on a high-tech crime, the story remains accessible. Katie Mettner skillfully clarifies technical jargon, allowing readers with limited knowledge of the technological themes to engage with the content easily. Terms are thoughtfully and strategically explained within the narrative and at times through dialogue, making it easy to understand. The pacing of the narrative is brisk and filled with intrigue, captivating me from the beginning and maintaining my interest right up to the conclusion.
I was so engrossed in the story that I didn’t want the book to end. Fortunately, I can eagerly anticipate the next installment in the Secure Watch series, "Tracing Her Stolen Identity." Katie Mettner has truly crafted a thrilling and emotionally resonant novel that I wholeheartedly recommend.

It was recommended to me to read this Katie Mettner book, so I downloaded it and began my journey into Secure One. OH MY I WAS HOOKED! This review is actually seriously late because I got drawn into the Secure One family so deeply that I purchased and read every other one of the series before I could write it!
I usually read fbi/ police thrillers and Dark Web Investigation seemed to possibly run parallel to this. I grabbed my coffee and settled down to try to start this book. Hours later, I had to unwillingly drag myself out of Kenley and Jude's chase for survival and justice. Well at least long enough to order dinner since there was no way I was going to leave myself hanging long enough to actually make it. So pizza ordered, I rejoined the team in their deadly quest.
This book taught me a lot about the internet and dark web; causing a shiver to run down my spine knowing that things like this can really happen. If you plan on reading this book, please take my advice and start at the beginning of the Secure One series, plan on getting nothing done around the house, and dive in with both feet to join the family of ex-military brothers and sisters working to keep the world and safer place!
Katie, I can't wait for the next deadly adventure I can join your team in!

Katie does it again. This is book one for her new series Secure One Investigations. I was hooked right from. the book and the main characters just hook you in.Mystery, intrigue, romance, and so much more. I highly recommend it. Can't wait for book two in series...

I am really enjoying the diversity of the characters in the line! Recently I read another title where the character was on the spectrum and this book does not shy away from the fact that Kenley has a disability.
Kenley is trying to help others when she stumbles upon a situation with national security risks. In comes Jude, someone who seems to understand her and her motivations, and is there to make sure everyone stays safe.
The author did a great job of outlining how two people forced into close quarters could learn so much about each other in such a short time. Additionally Kenley was no damsel in distress, and Jude was more than willing to accept her as she was.
The moments of intimacy where he cares for her, all of her, were really beautifully written! The threat and urgency was ever present as they faced an unknown enemy who was out to prove a point. There was a good mix of romance and suspense.
As a long time Harlequin reader this is my first book by this author but I will happily seek out others.
I am grateful to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to provide feedback!

Dark Web Investigation drops you headfirst into the murky and dangerous world of online crime, delivering a fast-paced and engaging thriller that keeps you hooked from the opening page. The narrative centers on Kenley Bates, a compelling protagonist shaped by personal tragedy and driven by an unwavering desire for justice. Her journey from victim to vigilante is both inspiring and heartbreaking, and the amputation she suffered adds a layer of vulnerability that makes her all the more relatable and admirable.
Mettner masterfully weaves together the personal stakes with a global threat, creating a high-stakes scenario that feels both relevant and terrifying. The dark web, often shrouded in mystery and fear, is vividly brought to life, highlighting the potential dangers lurking beneath the surface of our digital lives. The technical aspects of hacking and cybersecurity are handled with a level of detail that adds authenticity without bogging down the story. Even for readers unfamiliar with these concepts, Mettner manages to keep the explanations clear and engaging.
The introduction of Jude Mason, the ex-military cybersecurity expert, provides a necessary counterbalance to Kenley's more impulsive and emotionally driven approach. Jude's calm and calculated demeanor complements Kenley's passion, and their dynamic creates a compelling partnership. While the romantic undertones are subtle, they add an extra layer of intrigue and potential for future development.
Mettner has crafted a captivating story that will appeal to fans of suspense, action, and anyone who enjoys a good dose of intrigue, making this book a must read.

Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect, this book exceeded my expectations. It would make an awesome movie.

This book was really good. I loved Kenley and Jude.
The plot was well written. I enjoyed watching Kenley and Jude work together to try and figure out who is after Kenley. The mystery and suspense was tense. I can’t wait til the next book is out.
Katie never disappoints.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review this one.

What a fascinating book! Lots of intrigue and suspense. The whole AI thing is very interesting and troubling. I loved the instant attraction between Jude and Kenley. The writing sweeps you in and keeps you glued to the pages. It’s fast paced and engaging. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Dark Web Investigation is a super fast-paced romantic suspense set in the world of computer espionage and investigation. I really enjoyed Kenley and Jude and the way that they both thought themselves too broken, too scarred for a real life and real happiness.
I also loved that it’s set in the Secure One world so we got to see those characters again. Mettent keeps me coming back for more.

Kenley Bates still feels guilt over the ATV accident that caused her to lose her best friend and her own foot at the age of 17. Kenley believes the ATV manufacturer knew about a fault with the machine and kept it covered up while continuing to sell the ATVs. This led Kenley to start searching for evidence of negligence and to locate others who have suffered death or severe injury from similar accidents, and which leads her to start her own business helping people. She has become very skilled at her job and her methods take her beyond the Internet and deep into the dark web, but only to help others, and not to cause harm.
During one of her searches, she stumbles upon something she fears could cause harm worldwide. It scares her enough to have her calling for help from Delilah, who works for a company called Secure One, and is one of the few friends she has. But instead of Delilah, her call is answered by Jude Mason. The fear in her voice has Jude immediately wanting to help her and Kenley decides to trust him because she knows Delilah wouldn’t just leave her phone with anyone she didn’t trust.
This leads Kenley and Jude on a search to discover the source of the dangerous site that put fear into her and to take it down as quickly as possible. But someone doesn’t want that to happen and will do anything to stop her.
I loved the chemistry between Kenley and Jude, his acceptance of her disability and his care and concern in making sure she was as comfortable as could be during their ordeal.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love how Jude and Kenley met and how fast paced the action is. Keeps you on your toes from start to finish. Has action and romance.

This book will keep you on the edge of your seat! It’s not only a page turner, but a must read. Right from the beginning, I was hooked!
Kenley has one job by day and another at night. When she lost her best friend, when they were younger, in an ATV accident; it’s a race against time to get justice. She also is an amputee from the accident. Now she’s entangled with Savant, and she’s trying to take him down. When one incident has her calling Delilah for help, and Jude picks up, that’s where their friendship begins. He works at Secure Watch and is a Cybersecurity Expert. Kenley along with Jude are on a mission to break a code and hopefully take care of Savant for good. Along the way, danger ensues at every turn, never knowing if they are safe or are about to be taken out. Jude and Kenley also form a connection and bond over their short time together. In the end, what will happen? Will Jude and Kenley have a happy ending? Will Savant and his web be taken out? Wait til you find out!

Welp, she’s done it again. I was hooked and read it in break neck speed. This was fast paced, fun and did I mention fast? I loved that from page one you were off and running. Katie has such a way of writing that draws you in fast.
Kenley & Jude were a perfect match. And the way Katie shows us that having a disability makes no difference. And I mean that it the best way. As a person with no knowledge of what it could possibly be like we see how life goes on and how you must adapt. I often don’t read romance anymore. This reminded me how fun it is and finding your person in a crazy circumstance and loving them for who and what they are is what it’s all about. This book also reminded me that living your best life with joy where you can find it is the best way to combat the evil in our world.

Kenley uses her computer skills to help others so when she stumbled upon something she doesn't feel good about she calls one of the few people who she trust to help her however Jude is who answers her call. Jude has been covering for a friend while she is on her honeymoon so he doesn't hesitate to help only neither know what is coming. Completely devoured this book. Very intriguing

4.5 STARS!!
I have been a big fan to Ms. Mettner and her books -- especially her Harlequin Secure One series. I was so excited to have learned about her spinoff series Secure Watch, building from the Secure One series. I was NOT disappointed in the start of her new series. I am so excited for the books that will follow this one!! If you like the world of technology; age-gap trope with romance, and suspense, this story is for you!
Kenley Bates loses her foot in a ATV accident at the age of 17 that had left more than physical scars. The emotional toll that accident had left in her, especially in the loss of her friend, that lead her to become a very skilled hacker to not only collect evidence and data of negligence of the ATV company, but built a business of her own to bring justice to those around her that were knowingly wronged by the major corporations that had done nothing to prevent injuries and deaths with their products. How and where she gathers that evidence, well that is what leads her into her pickle. Talk about fate....realizing she stumbled across something dangerous on the dark web, led her to call Delilah (Secure One Book 6 character) but she was on a honeymoon and Jude Mason was on duty with her company phone and responded. From that point on, you are taken on the run with Jude and Kenley as they work together to solve who is following Kenley and who is responsible for a dangerous cyber program. The plot keeps you on your toes and anxious for both Kenley and Jude to solve the mystery and find out who the code name SAVANT is.
Well written. Clean language -- no profanity or crude words. Likable characters. Great chemistry between Jude and Kenley. There are a couple open door scenes, but not overly graphic with much left implied but you still get the passion and chemistry that you would want with your main characters. And although one could say this was a rather quick developed romance, I did not seem as quick as they had to learn to be vulnerable and trusting of each other's character traits and persona. There was development and some depth you get in their journey of their relationship. It wasn't insta-lust which I appreciated. Always with Ms. Mettner, she creates worlds for readers learn about different disabilities that people live with every day and how they are overcome mental battles with it, and they get their happily ever afters too! Truly awe inspiring and they deserve love and romance too! The book not only engages you, the reader, with all the action but also emotionally for Kenley and Jude, who learn to be vulnerable and trust with one another and overcome past guilts, traumas and mindsets. I love the integration of both Secure One and the Secure Watch team members woven into the story too because in a way you indirectly get updates from past favorite characters and how they are doing and what they have been up to.
My only complaint ...... 1. I would've liked a better resolution with the company that Kenley was originally investigating on for justice for her friend Gabby....
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Intrigue for the advanced copy!! Can't wait for book 2 of this series!!

This is a fun, entertaining book! There is enough suspense and action to keep you engaged and into the story line. The characters are well-developed and easy to follow.
