This book shares the history of Afghanistan and its people, including three individuals. Jamila was born in 1976 and became an activist. Bashir was born in 1987 and became a jihadist leader. Ariana was born in 2000 and became a voice against an arranged marriage.
The writing style is mostly easy to read. I found myself enthralled while reading about the country's history. At times, the three storylines were confusing, though. I wasn't always sure which character or time period I was reading about.
I like that the author focuses on women and shares stories about people I would otherwise not meet. Those insights humanize Afghans for me.

This well researched book is about three different peoples’ lives in Afghanistan from the time the Russians left through the return of the Taliban. Bashir is a fighter. His story is the life of a man with wealth and prestige in Afganistan. Jamila is plagued by polio but is constantly fighting for women’s rights. Ariana is a bright student who fights for the right to go to school.
