The writing style and narration for this book did not quite work for me for whatever reason. I found it hard to keep track of whether things were happening in the past or in the present, and because I was a bit confused, I was unable to fully connect with the story. I think this is just a "me" issue though so I'm not going to leave a negative review because I'm sure there are plenty of people who will connect and relate to the author's story.

A chilling look at domestic violence the strength of family the love of a mother to escape protect her children. This was a heart wrenching read that I could not put down.# NetGalley #algonquin

Just wasn't that interesting a read, despite the potential for a engaging story.
Pacing is everything for me and this was too slow.

What a story... what is it like to live in fear that someone who loved you and your children seeks to harm you or them because of their own tortured life? Because of their own demons they want others to suffer fear, hurt, anguish, even the possibility of death?
The author packs up her two daughters and her boyfriend and escapes to a city they aren't familiar with, attempting to put together a new life with new identities. Sort of a Do It Yourself Witness Protection Program...
The story moved along quickly for me and I finished the book in 2-3 days. I always looked forward to picking up the book again.
The sad thing is the author had little option, no answers other than assuming new identities and hiding for years from her children's father.

A great book. An eye opening story about family and domestic violence. The strength of a mother and resilience of kids. I really enjoyed this book.

I received a copy for review. All opinions are my own. Wow what a book. An inside look at domestic violence and the toll it can take that lasts decades, as it did in this case. Karen did an amazing job of telling her story from the heart even though it’s obvious she still wonders why she didn’t just leave sooner. This book is a reminder that domestic violence is all around us and it’s not so easy to leave. I felt angry and fearful at times while other chapters had me relieved and proud. Truly a well written story of one woman’s struggles and accomplishments as a human being.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
What an incredible story! This book is unlike any I've read before.
It's suspenseful and scary but also shows the power of true love and the lengths people will go to protect their family.
