Thank you to NetGalley, author Steve Cavanagh and Atria Publishing for the ARC and opportunity to review this book.
While I am a huge Eddie Flynn fan and love the way the author works him through the judicial system and all the twists that get thrown into all of his books I just didn’t like the theme of this one.
It was still exceptionally well written, had many twists that you won’t see coming but had a little too much politics for my liking. I get that was a huge part to the whole storyline I just didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others he had written.
The characters still rock, Eddie does what he does best, Bloch is kickass as always and Harry I just love!

Small southern Alabama county. White people stoked fear of those not like themselves. Towns whose residents can be manipulated into following the will of the prosecution, or suffer terrible consequences. One of the least populated counties in the country with the highest rate of death-penalty cases resulting in legalized killing. This was the environment that Eddie Flynn, ex-con artist and dedicated defense attorney, was dropped into and he was in the fight of his career. At the request of a well-placed but secretive homeland security honch, Eddie and his team were tasked with defending the life of Andy Dubois, college scholarship winner, and part-time bar dishwasher. The case was solid-two confessions, DNA evidence, testimony of the County Coroner, and town racism. Did he kill the beautiful white college girl who worked with him at the bar? Was the confession forced and the jury manipulated? Prosecutor Korn's only goal in life was to see justice done and his victims tortured in the electric chair-he's after a quick conviction with only hotshot New York lawyer Eddie standing in his way, and a young black man's life on the line. But some residents in the town now have bigger fish to fry, "The Pastor" has been planning for this day for months where many things will end, but will also usher in a new shiny beginning for his deserving followers. And the two incidents might be related.
At first, this book was almost too painful to read. With the deck so stacked against Eddie and with Korn tasting victory and another legal murder, the tension was overwhelming. If you also feel this way, stick it out because the payoff is absolutely worth it. To watch Eddie and his team of experts battle the odds of the case is riveting. The only problem with this book was that it ended and I wanted to follow Eddie as he defends more deserving people. The good news is that there are eight others in the British series by author Cavanagh (and Devil's Advocate is being newly
re-published in the United States.) Another fascinating series to become immersed in!

I will never rate a Steve C. BOOK LESS THAN 5 STARTS . HIS BOOKS ARE NOT ONLY PAGE TURNERS BUT THE TYPE OF BOOKS THAT WIL LLEAVE YOU CRAVING MORE.

Can I just say how much I love Eddie and his team. This was a good book with suspense and surprises. This is my second book with Eddie Flynn and I just loved the character and his wit and how he fights the law even when things are stacked against him. He always does the right thing, ok maybe not always but I like he style. Thank you Atria publishing for the NetGalley ARC.

The Devil’s Advocate is the 6th in the Eddie Flynn series. The plot always involves some twisty aspect on top of the actual legal maneuvering. This time, it’s a southern DA who gets a thrill out of getting people convicted and then executed. So much so that he manipulates the cases to win a conviction.
The book is told from multiple POVs, including the bad guys.
While I’ve enjoyed the other books in the series, the bad guys in this one felt like caricatures. We know from the beginning that the DA is evil. And as the Author’s Note makes clear, there are Southern DAs that are responsible for way more than their fair share of death penalties. But Cavanagh painted pretty much the whole Alabama town as nasty white crackers. Yes, I know that white supremacy is alive and well in the south, but I would have liked a little more nuance.
It is always interesting to see the challenges Flynn will face and how Cavanagh will get him out of them. The story moves at a brisk pace and is action packed. The legal wrangling is well thought out. I struggle with a lot of thrillers because of OTT endings and this one suffers from the same problem. In this day and age, the ability of the murderer just felt implausible.
But for those that are willing to suspend belief, this is fun entertainment.
My thanks to Netgalley and Atria Books for an advance copy of this book.

Lawyer Eddie Flynn is back and this time in the Deep South. The crooked, racist sheriffs department is trying to pin a murder on an innocent black boy and Eddie Flynn is not standing for it. This was another great Eddie Flynn series book that did not disappoint. It keeps you in suspense and the twists are great, especially finding out who it was at the end. I applaud Steve Cavanagh for bringing light to these tough issues which are still prevalent in some areas. It’s sad to know that the justice system can be so tainted and racism still runs rampant but it’s unfortunately true. I love how the theme throughout the book is always doing the right thing no matter what because this is a quote everyone should live by. I can’t wait to read the next one.

I really enjoy Steve Cavanagh’s writing and these recurring characters are ones that you can really get to know and root for. His pace is fast and the story moves. However some of the plot points are just very hard for me to believe, and I can’t suspend reality that far , I end up enjoying the book less, I get fixated on the few things that just don’t make sense to me.
Maybe it’s just me!

What a wonderful book! I'm obsessed with Steve Cavanagh and his smart lawyer character Eddie Flynn. The plot of this one was so interesting and full of surprises. I would recommend this legal thriller to anyone who likes a great mystery and smart writing. Pick this one up as soon as you can!

The author always does a great job with the suspense and his writing. Feeling like you are right there in the story. I really enjoyed this book and overall this author when it comes to any of his writings. Will definitely be in the look out for books to come.

This book was superb!!!
I need to go read the other books now but oh boys was there a lot with this one.

Intense chills and thrills! This novel is a gripping legal mystery about a young man, Andy Dubois, accused of killing a friend and coworker in a small southern town. The crime scene where Skylar Edwards' body was found reeks of an anger that does not seem to exist in Andy. There are aspects involved with the case that don't line up or sit right with his current defense team . . . and now his lawyer has suddenly gone off grid. Presented with this tricky situation, Eddie has decided to take on the case and renew the investigation efforts. The rural township is not at all welcoming to the outsiders coming to aid with Andy’s defense, as the locals have already made up their minds. The obvious bias, corruption, and fervent hate just feed Eddie’s desire to help Andy. Someone in this town is a killer, and Eddie must find irrefutable evidence that proves that person wasn’t Andy, or he will surely be executed for Skylar's death. Get ready for a clever plot and some heart-pounding suspense!
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy thrilling crime investigations, witty dialogue, and anything Eddie Flynn.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of The Devil’s Advocate for my unbiased evaluation. 5 stars

You'll have a wicked good time reading this book.
Eddie Flynn is back at it, only this time, he's in the South.
He's taken out of the hustle and bustle of New York to smalltown Alabama, where old ways of thinking prevail to some.
He takes the case of a young black man accused of murdering his white female co-worker.
However, everything is not as it seems.
I love that Harry plays such a big role in this story.

This is my second Eddie Flynn book and I am going to continue reading the rest of the books with him! I love his character. I love that he is willing to do questionable things to help his clients. I also enjoyed Bloch, Kate, and Harry! The whole team.
This book kept me engaged, but also made me mad! All the injustices & corruption that happened to a lot of innocent people. Overall, happy with how it all wrapped up. Would 100% recommend.

This intense legal thriller follows Eddie Flynn, a clever and street-smart lawyer who used to be a con artist. He has just seven days to prove the innocence of Andy Dubois, a man wrongly accused of murdering a young girl and facing the death penalty. Meanwhile, the ruthless District Attorney Randal Korn is determined to win the case at any cost—even if it means condemning an innocent man. Korn has a dark secret: he’s responsible for many murders but has never lost a trial. As the clock ticks down to the verdict, Eddie must navigate a corrupt legal system to save Andy—and himself. The story is fast-paced, full of suspense, and keeps you on edge until the very end.
Steve Cavanagh’s The Devil’s Advocate delivers another gripping legal thriller with Eddie Flynn at the center, a character who is as cunning and no-nonsense as ever. The story is intense and fast-paced, with plenty of twists that kept me hooked until the very end. Eddie’s dynamic with his team adds depth and warmth to the tense courtroom drama, making the stakes feel even higher.
The novel tackles heavy and relevant themes like capital punishment, systemic corruption, and racism, especially in a small Southern town setting. This made the story feel realistic and thought-provoking, though some readers might find the depiction of the villains a bit over-the-top or lacking subtlety. Still, it serves to highlight the injustice within the system Eddie fights against.
What stands out most is how well-crafted the plot is, balancing suspense with sharp courtroom battles and emotional moments. While the first half moves at a slower pace, the tension builds steadily, leading to a powerful and satisfying conclusion. Even if you haven’t read the previous Eddie Flynn books, this one can be enjoyed as a standalone, but longtime fans will appreciate the returning characters and their relationships.
Overall, it’s a strong addition to the series—smart, thrilling, and socially relevant—and definitely recommended for anyone who loves a high-stakes legal thriller with a fierce protagonist.
Favorite Quote:
"the devil is in the details, but so is the truth."

It's hard to keep reviewing books in this series, because I basically have the same things to say each time: powerful storylines, incredible characters, fabulous pacing, and insane twists make each book a delight to read. Without giving spoilers away, it's tough to say too much about the individual books - but trust me when I say that this short review is in no way an indication that I don't have things to say. Rather, it's that there are so many things I want to talk about, but to do so would serve up spoilers left, right, and center - and I wouldn't spoil these books for the world.
I don't know how he manages to come up with wholly original, devastatingly intricate plots for each book without ever doubling back on himself - unless it's intentional - and without ever devolving into a "haven't I read this before?" sensation. Evil lawyers are certainly nothing new, and as a trope it has been played out A LOT - but you've never seen a truly evil lawyer in the hands of Cavanagh before and you will find yourself gaping at the audacity even while your mind whirls through a million thoughts about plausibility until your head hurts...
Start with the first in the series - once you do, you won't stop reading. Cavanagh's Eddie Flynn is a piece of work in the best possible way and you will be drawn into his world and his morality so quickly your head will spin. Then you, like me, will eagerly await each new book!

The Devil's Advocate is another book in the Eddie Flynn series by Steve Cavanagh. I can't get enough of this series, with the con man turned lawyer. Full of suspense and twists, the author always leaves us guessing up to the very end. The way Eddie Flynn and his team manage to get out of tight situations is nothing short of miraculous. So engrossing and well-resolved in the end. A great read.
I got a complimentary copy from Atria Books via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are mine

A great set of main characters fighting the good fight in a corrupt town. Eddie, Harry, Bloch and Kate—all so different yet essential to the cause; saving someone from injustice. The court antics Were top notch. The villains in this story were complex— some evil to the core, but others with some final acts of redemption. Overall a fantastic book

Steve Cavanagh does it again—with The Devil’s Advocate, he hands Eddie Flynn his darkest, grittiest case yet and then cranks the tension up to eleven. This isn’t just a courtroom thriller—it’s a moral landmine, a southern gothic nightmare, and a straight-up adrenaline ride in a three-piece suit.
This was so fun! Like the rest of his books!

LOVED IT! This is definitely one of Steve Cavanagh’s bests. I felt so many emotions while reading this book, it was so much more than just a thriller and at points I forgot I was reading and not actually experiencing the words. Amazing!

Stave Cavanagh does not miss. He captivates you from beginning to end. Devils Advocate was no exception. It got deeper than I expected and I couldn’t get enough. Eddie and his team are such likable characters. I just can’t get enough of them. Fantastic book that you should definitely add to your list!
Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
