I’m going to start off by saying that I don’t think this book was for me. I love a mystery/ thriller but I do get a little spooked when it gets too creepy. Unfortunately, most of this book is from the POV of a District Attorney who loves sending people to death row. The writing was very vivid and I felt as if I was right next to the poor man who was wrongfully convicted frying in the chair. I, personally, couldn’t stomach being in the mind of the twisted DA but I think there is an audience that would very much enjoy it! I also found the lawyer’s perspective super interesting.

The Devil's Advocate is the 6th-installment to Steve Cavanagh's Eddie Flynn series, and it's the 3rd-book that I've read in the series thus far. I'm having a lot of fun. They keep me so engaged and guessing like nothing else. This series does indeed follow Eddie Flynn, a criminal defense attorney, as well as his team, as they investigate, work and defend various cases in and around New York City. Or at least, that's what I thought, until this case...
In this book, Eddie actually gets called away from the city in order to work a death penalty case in a small town in rural Alabama. As you can imagine, this is quite a culture shift for our city boy, Eddie. Andy Dubois is facing death, accused of killing a young lady that he worked with at a diner. Eddie believes Andy is innocent and that he's being railroaded by the local DA, Randal Korn, a man known for counting his death penalty convictions like notches in his belt.
From the moment they arrive in town, Eddie and his teammate, Harry, are met with cold shoulders, and various obstacles making them aware that their presence in town is not welcomed. Nevertheless, they push on. A man's life is on the line and it's gonna take a lot more than what these locals are dishing out to scare Eddie away. In just a week, Eddie and his team need to overcome this corrupt system and find the real killer before time runs out for Andy.
The Devil's Advocate is another really fun case with Eddie and his dynamic team. I enjoyed how this one gets Eddie out of his comfort zone in NYC and into the deep South. This one didn't feel as psychological as the other 2-books I've read in the series. It focuses more on small town corruption and flaws within the criminal justice system in general, but I thought it was a nice change of pace.
There was also a lot more involvement with officials from the Federal system, which was interesting. I feel like I've seen a whole new side of Bloch, one of Eddie's valuable teammates. She's one of my favorites, so it was nice to see her built out a little more. This is the kind of case that will absolutely get your blood boiling. It actually had me on the edge of my seat too, because it felt very dangerous for Eddie and his team. You never want to be an outsider in a situation like this. I feel like Cavanagh did a great job of building that intensity and making it feel believable. Sadly, corruption isn't just in fiction, and numerous lives have been affected by it in cases much like this.
I particularly enjoy the courtroom elements, but honestly, they're all just so compelling. They're fast-paced, easy to read and wicked entertaining. As you can tell, I'm really looking forward to picking up the rest of the books. Thank you so much to the publisher, Atria, for introducing me to the Eddie Flynn series and providing me with copies to read and review. I highly recommend these books for people who love intense Legal Thrillers!

Eddie Flynn is back again! I read this not realizing it was part of the series, and I have already read ones that were written to be next in the series, but it didn’t really make a difference. This can absolutely be read as a standalone book or in order. In this one, Eddie is asked to help with a case in which Andy is being accused of murdering a girl, and the prosecutor is requesting the death penalty. Eddie has a good feeling Andy didn’t commit this crime, but the prosecutor is known for getting the accused on death row..this wasn’t my favorite in the series. It seemed to move a little slower than his other books, but overall it was still decent. If you like courtroom thrillers, check this one out!

The Devil's Advocate by Steve Cavanagh is an exciting installment in the Eddie Flynn series. About 25% into the novel, the storyline began to feel very familiar. After a quick google search, I learned this is a re-release of a previously published novel. It's been a while since I originally read The Devil's Advocate, so it was still as entertaining as the first read. I don't typically revisit novels, but Eddie Flynn is so entertaining I made an exception this time. Looking forward to the 9th installment due to release later this year.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Atria Books, and Steve Cavanagh for an advance copy (of the re-release) in exchange for my honest review.

Just as expected, I loved this one. I love the world of Eddie Flynn and as a girl that loves Law and Order and shows like it, I eat this kind of book up. I love that each scenario Eddie ends up in is different but has the same found family aspect. Can’t wait to read even more of the series!

Steve Cavanagh does it again! Just when you think the twists and turns of a Cavanagh novel have reached their pinnacle, he raises the bar and sets a higher standard.
Cavanagh’s sixth book in the Eddie Flynn series is that new standard. Devil’s Advocate follows Andy Dubois, an innocent man on trial for the murder of a young girl. As the evidence seems to pile up against Andy, Eddie Flynn steps in to shed some light on the case.
Courtroom drama at its best. Cavanagh is a master at building suspense and keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Devil’s Advocate is no exception.
Thank you to Atria books for providing this book for review. All opinions here are my own.

I feel like I have a book hangover after reading The Devils Advocate. I was biting my nails in anticipation to find out what happened.

There are many things to like about this book. I really like Eddie as a protagonist and his band of misfits that work with him. I love the courtroom action. The beginning was rough for me because of the gratuitous violence, and had it been the first book I've read by cavanaugh I read, I might have stopped but I'm glad I didn't. In the end, it was a satisfying, gripping read.

This was my second Eddie Flynn book and I can safely say I am now hooked! I am new to legal thrillers but this series made a fan out of me. I love the main characters (Eddie, Kate, Harry, and Bloch) even more as I learn more about them. I look forward to continuing their story in future books!
I did find the beginning of this story a bit slower and it took me a few days to get into it but after about 30% I read the rest of the book in one afternoon! I literally could not put it down and I loved all the twists and turns. This story was very dark💀but extremely well done in my opinion. 4⭐️
Thank you so much NetGalley and Atria books for this copy!

Loving this series and it just keeps getting better! Mr. Cavanagh keeps me on my toes with each and every addition. Keep em coming!!!!!

If you keep knockin' on the devil's door, sooner or later he'll invite you in.
And Eddie Flynn and his team will sip from tea cups embellished with skulls and crossbones. Just don't swallow, Eddie.
The Devil's Advocate takes us to new stompin' grounds way outside NYC. Eddie has been encouraged to represent a young man accused of murder in Sunville County, Alabama. Eddie and his law partner, Kate, will be certified to do just that through the back door of the FBI. He'll bring along Harry, a retired judge, and Bloch, his investigator. This mix will be challenged to the hilt where law and order has completely different goals in this neck of the woods.
Skylar Edwards is a chemistry major at the University of Alabama. She's working at Hogg's Bar as a waitress to earn extra money. But Skylar won't make it home that night after her shift. She's found murdered not too far away. Andy Dubois, a fellow worker at the bar, is accused of her murder. The facts don't matter to Buckstown. Sheriff Colt Lomax has already locked Andy up under some dire circumstances. Randal Korn, the DA, has notches on his belt for the death penalty. And will Andy survive the lockup let alone the court trial?
The Devil's Advocate is #6 in the Eddie Flynn Series by Steve Cavanagh. It can certainly be read as a standalone. It was originally published in 2021 and is being re-released 8/5/25. This is a wickedly good series with non-stop action and well thought out storylines where Cavanagh reigns with his deeply analytical mind.
The Devil's Advocate is an emotional read. Cavanagh goes way over the fence with situations of Man's inhumanity to Man. There's one character who almost bears the mark of the beast on his forehead.......Evil personified. Prepare for that. It's not for the squeamish. But in the scheme of things, we live in a world where justice is doled out differently and Lady Justice often turns her back completely. But now Eddie is on the case of his lifetime and, believe me, he and his whole team are at the business end of a long gun aimed at them. Stay tuned.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Orion Publishing and to the talented Steve Cavanagh for the opportunity.

Absolutely obsessed with Eddie Flynn’s series. I read so fast that I couldn’t stop. It was so many emotions that it had you crying, angry, even laughing. Truly recommend this read for sure! Thank you NetGalley for this great opportunity!

4.5 stars rounded up to 5
I liked that this was not a whodunnit in a typical sense and i liked the twist at the end.
It was a little over complicated (which I tend to think is the case for most of this series) but otherwise a 5 star read!

Steve!!!! You are killing me with these thrillers! They keep me on edge and guessing the entire time! My heart was pounding.

Steve Cavanagh is one of my favorite authors.
Randal Korn is the DA in a little Podunk town in Alabama, and yet he has one of the highest numbers of death penalty cases in the whole United States.
Eddie Flynn, our favorite con artist become attorney gets a phone call from Berlin, who works in the federal government. Andy Dubois is charged with murder and facing the death penalty from Korn. Eddie and his group go to Alabama to see how they can help him.
Body after body begin turning up that are associated with the case, Eddie and the team begin to wonder, who all are involved in a cover up.
Tandem to the case, a story is told about The White Cameilla, a white supremacy group with a plan. As the story unfolds, it is revealed just what the group had to do with the murder, and the results are shocking.
Another very interesting and entertaining book by Steve Cavanagh. Eddie and team are always entertaining. I agree with the reviews that this book got me angry. I loved the twists and turns however and never wouldn't guessed the ending.

The Devils Advocate by Steve Cavanagh is just another example of how addictive the Eddie Flynn series is.
I only recently read my first Eddie Flynn book, and I feel like I’ve been sleeping on something so great until this point. Though not quite the same, I’ve been a long-time fan of the video game franchise Phoenix Wright, and for me, Eddie Flynn feels reminiscent of that but in book form. Not only is Eddie a lawyer, but alongside his team, he also investigates the crime to find the real culprit and this questioning of witnesses, checking out the crime scene, etc. makes these books all the better and harder to stop reading. I am absolutely hooked and The Devils Advocate was just one more shining example of this series.
It's honestly so hard not to get attached to Eddie, and frankly his fellow band of misfits. They all have this unreasonable charm about them that has me anxious as hell whenever someone is in danger, and emotional when they’re forced to deal with their emotions. I was super happy to see Kate return as part of Eddie’s team as she really grew on me in the last book, and she is smart as a whip. Honestly, all the members of team Eddie are so great in their own unique ways and made me enjoy the read even more. Perhaps my only potential hang back as far as characters is the extra points of view beyond Eddie and the defense team, as I was less interested in having to read the more villainous viewpoints. I get their inclusion from the perspective of giving greater detail into events taking place outside of what the defense team are capable of having any insight into, but it just didn’t hook me in as much as the characters I know and love.
The plot still moved at a fast pace and was intriguing, meaning I wanted to fly through it because I didn’t want to stop. And of course, there is the tension of whether the defence will be able to win the day, especially with all the blockades constantly getting in their way just when it seems like they might have caught a break. It was anxiety inducing and kept things interesting from start to finish without getting tiresome. The Devils Advocate only further convinced me that the Eddie Flynn series is a true gem, and I desperately want to keep reading more of these books because I’m entirely hooked into the characters and the premise. This one was another winner, and I can’t wait until the next.

Wow! Any emotion I could feel was felt reading this book. From laughter to tears to white knuckling the edge of my seat. Easily a 5 star read! The evil, corruption and racism left me feeling sad and angry. It was as disturbing as the crime itself. I absolutely love Eddie Flynn, Kate, Bloch and Harry. Their characters never disappoint. Thank you Atria Books for this ARC I could not put it down... absolutely phenomenal writing Mr Cavanagh.

I will read anything this man writes, omg. I loved this book. it was so interesting and the twist totally got me!

Eddie Flynn is back and this time he may have bitten off more than he can chew in The Devil's Advocate! This time Eddie will need to travel to Buckstown, Alabama, to represent Andy Dubois who has been accused of viciously killing Skylar Edwards. The prosecutor on the case, Randal Korn, is known as the "King of Death Row." Korn loves sending people to their deaths. Everyone in town believes that Andy brutally murdered Skylar and they are out for his blood. Andy is fighting an uphill battle and Eddie Flynn is all he has left in hopes of making it out alive.
Eddie Flynn and his team arrive in town and are not given the southern charm welcome that they were hoping for. The good old boys have a club, and they are out to see Andy fry no matter what. Eddie must pull out all the stops to save his client and perhaps even himself.
This book was a little different from his other books. While I enjoyed this one, I wasn't as instantly gripped and engrossed in the plot as I usually am. Having said that, I still enjoyed this book and found myself experiencing several emotions while reading this book ranging from outrage, to hope, to sadness, to relief, etc. I did my fair share of booing and hissing at certain diabolical and evil characters while feeling for the poor treatment of another. This book does deal with racism, abuse of power, corruption, and capital punishment to name a few.
This book has its fair share of tension, drama, suspense, twists, reveals, and witty comments. I love how Eddie uses his street smarts to his advantage and how his team has become more like family. I look forward to the next book in the series!!!!

This is book six in the Eddie Flynn series, but don’t worry—you don’t have to read them in order. I jumped around and had no trouble keeping up. That said, I highly recommend reading Fifty Fifty first to fully appreciate the emotional stakes and the tight-knit bonds between Eddie and his team in this one.
Fresh Fire in the Courtroom
Courtroom drama usually isn’t my go-to genre, but Steve Cavanagh has me completely hooked on this series. He breathes fresh air into legal thrillers with his sharp writing and his standout character, Eddie Flynn, along with a crew that definitely doesn’t always color inside the lines. And thank goodness for that—because watching Eddie and his team go the devil’s way and play a little dirty when needed is half the fun.
Cavanagh’s pacing is spot-on. He builds fiery tension that had my fingers flying across the pages. Just when you think things might cool down, he drops a twist like a fireball—raising the stakes and lighting everything up again.
Characters with Backbone (and Bite)
Cavanagh never sacrifices character for plot, and that’s one of the things I love most. The loyalty, smart banter, and camaraderie between Eddie and his team add so much heart to the story. If you’ve read Fifty Fifty, you’ll recognize how those bonds have deepened—and that emotional through-line gives this installment extra impact.
A Villain Straight Out of a Nightmare
Cavanagh delivers one of the creepiest villains in the series—a prosecutor who takes “corrupt” to a whole new level. He’s cold, calculating, and terrifyingly powerful. It gave me chills watching how far he’d go—and how many people were willing to go along with the devil himself.
Welcome to Buckstown—Where Justice is a Joke
The small-town setting of Buckstown, Alabama, adds another layer of intensity. Eddie walks into a place where the law has long been twisted to serve power and prejudice. Corruption runs deep, racism festers beneath the surface, and Eddie—as the outsider—is exactly the kind of threat the town fears most.
There’s a sense of Southern Gothic meets legal thriller here, and it works beautifully. The tension isn’t just in the courtroom—it’s in the air, the streets, the sideways glances, and the whispered secrets. The whole town feels complicit, and the stakes feel dangerously real.
Devilishly Good
Step into this courtroom—you won’t regret facing The Devil’s Advocate.
