What a strange, funny, and informative graphic novel! If you have a kid who enjoys interesting characters while learning something new (in this case, Ancient Egypt), then this is a great book for you! Overall a fun, quick, and enjoyable read!

Olivia Wolf is not JUST a wolf — she’s a werewolf. Readers will realize that as soon as they open this graphic novel, as Olivia’s schoolmates include some vampires, a bat, a petit mummy, a ghost, a mold person (hey! I’m just reporting here!), a skeleton and whatever Fred is. Parents of scaredy-cats like I was need not worry though: As with Monster High and Casper, the spookies in MonstroCity are anthropomorphized and quite friendly.
Today’s the science fair at their school, and Oliva and her schoolmates have brought a collection of offbeat projects. Mad scientist Vane, cute as can be in her pink hair and glasses, decides to bring a time machine as her contribution to the science fair. And good thing, too! Because the friends go back to Ancient Egypt to help poor Mario the Mummy.
Author/illustrator José Fragoso has woven a fun story with the additions of puzzles and fun facts about Ancient Egypt. Youngsters will really enjoy this book as a four-star read, although their grownups would probably rate it lower.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and First Second Books in exchange for an honest review.
