I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.
This has been on my TBR pile for so long, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. I really enjoyed the storyline and seeing the characters change throughout the story was a great character development. The plot was great and kept my attention. I'm glad I got the chance to read this and will be on the lookout for more in the future!
I really enjoyed this book! I feel kind of bad that this book sat on my virtual shelves for years before I finally got around to picking it up. I am so glad that I finally bumped it up to the top of my tbr pile. I found the concept to be really interesting and the story was rather exciting. This book is a stand-alone but I really feel like it would be been a great series starter.
I liked the whole idea of the castle of Shadow Wood which is a sanctuary for those from the Netherworld. Declan is Lord of the Netherworld and created the gargoyles and is now looking for a new sentinel to take control of them. He has two candidates in mind. Kate is an actress at the top of her career but when she goes to sleep she is transported to Shadow Wood. Ian is a popular author who is about to learn that all of the stories Declan has told him are more real than he ever imagined.
I did have fun reading this book and was always eager to pick it back up after a day at work but I do think that the story tried to do too much and lacked focus. Not only is there a whole castle full of supernatural beings and the gargoyles to learn about, but Kate also has a crazy ex-boyfriend and a stalker that must be dealt with. On top of all that, there is a bit of a budding romance to keep things extra interesting. I really liked the characters and wanted to see things work out for them. Even though the story was very exciting there were times that I just wanted to get back to the things going on with the gargoyles and the castle.
I do think that a lot of other readers will enjoy this one. There was quite a bit of action that kept the story moving and a few surprises along the way. I would definitely read more of this author’s work in the future.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Skyscape via NetGalley.
To be honest, I read this a couple years ago but I don’t believe I finished it as I found it very hard to get into and dropped it early on. However, this could become the fan favorite of someone else.
This held so much promise but it ultimately fell very flat. The Gargoyles sentinel is dead leaving a vacancy. Only the Gargoyles can pick their next watcher as it were and they have chosen a movie actress?? Kate must decide if she is going to join this mystical world and control the gargoyles or stay in her actress life leaving herself mostly isolated by her fame. To complicate matters, the creator of the gargoyles has brought in another contender for her position, Ian, a writer in need of a muse. The world building and background is highly descriptive. This is a dark paranormal world. We have vampires, gods, demons, werewolves and gargoyles and a great premise for a wonderful potential story but this wasn’t it.
I enjoyed this book. Of Shadow and Stone is a paranormal thriller that mixes together all kinds of paranormal creatures. .
There is a lot of detail packed into this book but none of it seemed out of place to me. It didn’t interfere with any of the action.
There’s a little romance (not trashy romance novel romance), a little paranormal, and a thrilling ending.

This book did not hold my attention easily. It often was a little too descriptive. I wish that it was a little more heavy on conversation and action and less so on describing things in great detail such as exactly what a character was wearing or looking at.
The book had an interesting hook with the idea that all the stone gargoyles that one encounters were actually living gargoyles. Add in a sanctuary for all kinds of mythical characters and color me intrigued!
In this book, we find the Lord of the Netherworld who lives in a castle called Shadow Wood . His sentinel manages the gargoyles to keep them from creating trouble in our world. He is looking for a new sentinel that can only be chosen by the gargoyles.
A famous young author and a famous young actor are in the running for the sentinel. They are put together at the Shadow Wood with a warlock and other Netherworlders to see what they are made of.
I enjoyed the world that was created, I would have liked less description though.
I didn't get a chance to read this before it expired. I'm sorry!
