Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen is set in 1819 England, and is the revised tenth anniversary edition of the story. Sir John Mayfield, Lady Marianna Mayfield, and her lady’s companion get into a carriage accident off a narrow cliff that changed their lives forever.
I always enjoy the author’s Regency stories. The story drew me in with the dialogue, setting, and redemptive ending. This story has many twists and turns due to the characters’ complicated and messy lives. I appreciated the depth of the characters and watching many of them grow, mature, and change. I found this grittier than the author’s other books, beautifully written and I valued the depth of the story.
It was a pleasure to reread Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen. I enjoyed this interesting Regency romance and recommend. The author shared how she has learned a great deal about writing in the last 10 years and appreciated being able to update the story.
I was given a copy and not required to write a positive review.

I fell in love with this wonderfully compelling and fast-moving tale from Julie Klassen, the gifted master of Regency romantic suspense. The beautifully drawn characters, surprising twists and turns of the plot, heartfelt romantic tension, and vividly described settings evoked every emotion and kept me turning pages long into the night. You’ll be swept away!

Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen was full of beautiful descriptions.
If you like stories with second-chances, forgiveness, and true, sacrificial love, then this is the story for you.
None of the characters in this book are perfect. Their flaws are obvious and what has stayed with me is the process of each character realizing their weaknesses and how they chose to deal with them. Watching the forgiveness and second chance unfold was beautifully written and I still think about it after reading this story.
There are so many lessons within this beautiful story and this 10th Anniversary edition with its updates is my favorite version of this story.
Thank you to Bethany House and Austen Prose for the copy of this book. All views are my own.

Absolutely loved reading the 10th Anniversary edition of Lady Maybe! Julie Klassen breathes new life into this gorgeous 10th anniversary edition & I loved revisiting this achingly beautiful story. With nods to beloved favorite Jane Eyre, it’s a story of lies, betrayal, a terrible accident, amnesia, secrets, a heart-achingly forbidden romance, forgiveness, & second chances.
Hannah Rogers’ life is turned upside down when the carriage carrying her & her employers Sir John & Lady Marianna Mayfield overturns. Lady Marianna is thrown into the sea & Hannah is presumed to be Lady Marianna. When Hannah awakens, she has amnesia & can’t remember who she is. The longer it takes for her memory to return, the more she slips into the role of Lady Mayfield.
Once her memory returns, she keeps up the charade while Sir John lies unconscious until she’s able to retrieve her infant son & his young nurse. But what happens when Sir John awakes & recognizes she’s not his wife? There’s also a young solicitor who arrives to see Sir John. He’s never met Lady Marianna, but has heard rumors & is suspicious of Hannah. The romantic tension is deliciously palpable throughout as Hannah is caught between the secrets of her hidden past & two men vying for her affections.
Full of twists & turns, this gothic romance kept me quickly turning the pages. Hannah is such a sympathetic character & the longer the charade goes on the harder things become. As her memory slowly returns, we learn what happened to her & how she became pregnant with her son. There’s also more about Lady Marianna’s character & the awful position Hannah’s put in. Themes of adultery, repentance, forgiveness, & second chances are woven beautifully throughout. The romance is bitter sweet & I honestly wasn’t sure who Hannah would choose until the end. It’s a powerful story that has stayed with me.
Highest of recommendations for this amazing book. If you’ve read the previous edition, you’ll notice some revisions, expanded scenes & content, as well as toning down of some of the more sensual scenes. This is a clean, closed door Regency with inspirational themes. I received an advanced copy from the author & publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & voluntarily provided.

It’s been 10 years since Lady Maybe first hit shelves—and whether you’re discovering it for the first time or revisiting it like I did, this gripping Regency read is full of secrets, twists, and emotional depth.
The story opens with a tragic carriage accident and a woman waking with no memory of who she is, haunted by fractured dreams and mysterious clues. As her past slowly unravels, so does a tale of hidden identity, love, betrayal, and redemption.
If you enjoy historical fiction, the amnesia trope, slow-burning romance, and mysteries where every chapter brings you closer to the truth—you’ll love this one.
This newly revised 10th anniversary edition is the perfect excuse to dive in… or reread with fresh eyes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Triggers: Includes mention of infidelity involving two couples, mild innuendo, intimacy between an unmarried couple, love triangle, amnesia, and themes of forgiveness and redemption.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I loved the suspenseful plot and all the twists and turns, It’s well-written with beautiful prose and has a vivid sense of time and place. setting. The characters were well drawn and three-dimensional, and the storyline kept me turning pages until the end.

I finally got to finish up this book, and my goodness, what a way to wrap it up! Betrayal, scheming, bigamy, and finally, a HEA. I knew there would be a plot twist, but this one threw me for a loop.

Lady Maybe was recently updated by Julie Klassen to celebrate the book's 10th anniversary. I've read many of her other books but this was the first time I've read this one. Once I started it I found I couldn't put it down! It completely drew me in. There was a lot of character growth which especially made the book interesting.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy of this book. A review was not required.
Content Considerations: This is a closed foor romance with a fade to black scene, and infidelity as well. That being said, some good does eventually prevail at the end of the book.

This is a hard review to write if I am honest. Julie Klassen is one of my favorite authors. I went into Lady Maybe hoping for a historical romance filled with mystery and strong emotional depth....something Julie Klassen has always delivered. The atmospheric setting, intriguing premise, and beautiful writing drew me in. Love a good mistaken identity storyline too. A woman surviving a carriage accident with no memory, a mysterious ring on her finger, and the danger that surrounds her.....it all had the makings of a gripping story. I really liked it too for a while....
But unfortunately, I had to put this one down due to my personal convictions.
What ultimately made me DNF the book was the direction the plot took with double infidelity shown and a love triangle that just didn’t sit right with me. I don’t mind flawed characters, but the gray areas here.....especially involving marital betrayal and shifting affections felt too heavy-handed and uncomfortable for my personal taste. I found it difficult to connect with or root for the characters, and the emotional entanglements became more frustrating than compelling. I love a redemption story just as much as the next person, but this one just wasn't it.
If you're a reader who doesn’t mind messy relationships or complex romantic dynamics, this might still work for you. But if infidelity and romantic confusion are deal-breakers...consider this a heads-up.
From what I understood, this is a book that was re-released and the sensual content was toned down, but I still didn't care for the plot of where things went. I have seen other reviews say a similar reason for why they DNF this one.
Final Thoughts:
While I appreciate Julie's talent and the premise had promise, the themes and relational dynamics in Lady Maybe weren’t a good fit for me. DNF around the halfway mark. I will continue to read her other books as they usually don't have these themes in them. Thank you to the publisher for giving me this copy to honestly read and review.

This story certainly sucks you in right from the start. I loved how we quickly changed POVs and the twists and turns throughout. I don’t usually like a “love triangle” but I confess, I was totally invested! And I was surprised by who I wanted our main character to get with, and VERY happy with the ending! Very excited to finally read this one by Julie Klassen.

What book would you like to reread? I remember loving Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen ten years ago and I loved it just as much reading it again. I read the new 10th anniversary edition in one day!
Hannah Rogers was formerly the companion of Lady Mayfield. She has returned to ask for her job back after mysteriously disappearing months before. Lady Marianna Mayfield rehires her to go on a trip with her and her husband Sir John Mayfield. Sir John is trying to remove Marianna from being near her lover. Along the way, the carriage is involved in a terrible accident. Hannah wakes up confused and is being called Lady Mayfield. She realizes being Lady Mayfield could solve many of her problems. How will Hannah get out of this predicament?
My thoughts on this novel:
• There were great characters, twists, and turns in this story. I loved the twists and turns, and I don’t want to ruin it for other readers.
• I also enjoyed the faith element and how Hannah tried to do the right thing by everyone and God.
• This novel was set in Regency England and has shades of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte mixed with Jane Austen’s Lady Susan. I love author Julie Klassen and how her novels are a perfect blend of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen.
• This is clean read, but there are some more sensual scenes that involve feelings of longing and kissing. Adultery is on the main stage in this novel.
• I liked how the characters, especially Hannah are conflicted and have a lot to work through.
• There were also great well rounded side characters such as Dr. Parrish, Becky, and Mrs. Turrell. I enjoyed them and their relationships with Hannah.
• There is a love triangle as part of this story, and I always love a good love triangle.
What has changed in this edition? From Julie Klassen, “I toned down the sensuality in a few scenes, expanded Mrs. Turrill’s wise mentor role a bit, improved and streamlined the writing in several places, and corrected many small historical inaccuracies throughout. The characters and story itself are the same, but I am very grateful for this opportunity to improve the first edition—I’ve learned a lot in the last ten years!”
Overall, Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen is romantic historical suspense at its best. I highly recommend it.
Thank-you to @julie.k.klassen @bethanyhousefiction @austenprose for the review copy of this novel as part of the Austenprose PR Tour.

Julie Klassen books are like a warm cup of tea on a cold, rainy day. Lady Maybe is a beautifully written novel that will have you up at night turning pages. I love how fast paced the book was at the beginning, It really drew me into the story right from the very start. The story centers around a lady's companion, forced to assume another's identity after a tragic accident. The book is full of mystery, intrigue, and this world that Julie paints so beautifully with her words. The Regency era is where Julie Klassen shines, and I know I'm always in for a treat when I have one of her books in hand.
I loved all the characters even the not so lovable ones, because of how well they were written. If you enjoy Jane Austen, you'll love Julie Klassen books! The new cover design is absolutely stunning and it looks beautiful on my shelf. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction, Regency romance, or anyone who loves a story that keeps you guessing until the very end. Julie Klassen never disappoints, and Lady Maybe is one of her finest.

Lady Maybe is not your typical Regency romance. There are no ballroom dances, no chaperones, and scandal is a large part of the story. There was mystery and plot twists which made me want to keep on reading. Marianna was quite an awful woman and was so vindictive that I really was wondering how things were going to work out for James.
The message of forgiveness from God and also forgiving yourself was one that is good to be reminded of. It was a great to see that no matter what Hannah or we have done, we can still change.
I thought the ending was quickly wrapped up and a bit rushed. I also would like to have had an epilogue to see what happened in the future.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own with no obligation to write a positive review.

Lady Maybe held a different flavor than Julie Klassen’s other Christian Fiction novels. First of all, the book was hard-to-put-down. For me, Klassen’s novels are generally calm and sweet historical romances that I find enjoyable and relaxing. However, Lady Maybe kept me on my toes with its mystery and made me want to stay up all night with its romance. Intrigue hovered for most of the book while other plot points (injury recovery, searching for a child, secrets, etc.) constantly moved the story forward. I read the novel in two long sittings because I wanted to know how things would turn out for Sir John, Lady Marianna, and Hannah.
Lady Maybe also carried a more sensual romance than normally found in Klassen’s novels. Including a fade-to-black bedroom scene was an edgy choice for a novel that held clearly Christian elements as it openly addressed repentance, forgiveness, and the need for Christ. I did enjoy the romantic tension between Hannah and Sir John, though I think the story could have stood quite well, perhaps even better, without the love triangle that grew throughout the novel.
Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen was highly enjoyable to read, so much so that it has a permanent home on my bookshelf. Four stars!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

In Lady Maybe, Julie Klassen has written an intriguing story of a lovely young woman who is ushered by fate into a world of lust, secrets, deceit, and forbidden love. A victim of a carriage accident, Lady finds herself in a beautiful, mysterious mansion in Devonshire—caught between a web of lies and two handsome suitors vying for her affections. What secrets does a beautiful ring and a baby boy hold for Lady? . . . and what dangers await her in this wicked, but splendid manor?
Multiple award-winner, Julie Klassen has written a Gothic Regency era novel that will keep the reader turning those pages frantically in spite of themselves! Ms. Klassen has proven herself to be a masterful storyteller—with multi-faceted characters, twists and turns, and a totally unpredictable outcome. Some lessons must be learned the hard way and there are consequences to pay for sinful behavior, but hope and redemption may be found in God. Another well-written novel by Julie Klassen in a new, revised edition! Happy 10th Anniversary, Lady Maybe!
*I was given a complimentary ARC of this book by Bethany House via Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

I just finished this historical romance and it did not disappoint! The amount of surprises in this book was amazing! Hello plot twists! Julie Klassen got me every time.
This is a historical romance that has a Jane Eyre feel to it. Sir John, Lady Mayfield and her companion are involved in a carriage accident. One must find her way when awakened in a new place, with new servants, and a confused memory.
Full of twists and turns, a love triangle, swoony moments...very well written and kept me on my toes. I was constantly...."what is she going to do?!" 🫣
This is the 10th anniversary rerelease of this story. If you like Jane Eyre and Christian romance, I recommend this one!

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for the ARC of Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen. All opinions are my own.
I had been wanting to read a book by this author for some time now, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this tenth anniversary edition early. I definitely plan to read more books by this author in the future because I really liked this writing style.
Lady Maybe was different than I expected it to be, but I really liked it. I was expecting romance and danger, and while there was some danger, there’s a bigger focus on romance and on drama (which was a lot of fun to read).
One thing that stood out to me about this book was how unpredictable it was. I even found this to be true with the romance, and that is rare for me to see in the books I usually read. I enjoyed how the story kept me guessing, and I could never figure out what would happen next or even how it would end.
I also enjoyed that the characters were lovable while also being very much flawed. I could understand the choices they made even if they weren’t exactly good choices in the end.
The different points of view were helpful for moving the story along, and I enjoyed reading from each perspective.
Overall, I would recommend this book and actually encourage people to go into this book without knowing much about it because I think it will be even more enjoyable.

This story begins with an accident, injuries, death and amnesia. The mysteries were great with lots of twists and turns as things are revealed slowly. You are left guessing right up to the end what the female main character will do.
I am a big fan of Julie Klassen. This book while “clean” was a little different for me. There was talk of premarital intimacy, adultery, baby out of wedlock, betrayals and deception. There is nothing graphic on the page. It is closed door. There are also descriptions of the consequences of sin. Redemption and forgiveness.
