Give me alllll the witchy books please! I devoured this book! It was so much fun. I loved the urban setting with a magical twist. As I said earlier, I’m a witchy gal, but throw in some vamps and other magical creatures and I’m literally sold! This was a really good story; the themes of found family and autonomy were done so well and I just loved the characters.

An Unlikely Coven is a fun urban fantasy tale of found family fighting against all odds to survive in a magical version of New York. This version of the city is filled with witches, vampires, and fae, and it features a magical transit system known as HERMES.

The main character, Joan, a witch, is the younger daughter of Merlin Greenwood. The Greenwoods are the most powerful magical family in New York, with Merlin’s sister Valeria being the head witch. Joan, an out-of-work architect, is unable to cast spells, but she does have other significant abilities that she discovers during the novel. She has never felt herself to be a valued, loved member of the Greenwood family, and their lack of warmth towards her is, at times, heartbreaking.

The deep friendship she shares with CZ, a vampire, and her close bond with her older sister, Molly, are what keep her going in the face of her family’s cruelty and indifference towards her. Full of determination and bravery, Joan is a character it is hard not to root for, and it is easy to see why her friends all adore her.

Joan and CZ find themselves embroiled in a complicated whodunnit mystery with a confused human, Mik, at the centre of a magical power grab. Their kind hearts and high moral standards are all that Mik can pin their hopes on, having found themselves thrown into the middle of the perilous magical world against their will.

An Unlikely Coven is a funny, warm-hearted story of love, both platonic and unrequited, and high stakes, heart-stopping adventure as the unlikely coven of friends Joan gathers around herself races to find out who is behind Mik’s plight before the Greenwoods can get their hands on them. The story continues in a sequel, and I look forward to reading it when it becomes available.

Thank you to Orbit Books, the author and NetGalley for the arc of this book. My review is honest, and my opinions are my own.

An Unlikely Coven is a fun, "magical" paranormal story, that brings together a mix of quirky, lovable characters, that have all of the found family vibes I love. I wasn't sure how I felt starting out on this one, but by the time I reached Act II, I was definitely invested in the FMC and her friend group. There's a great struggle and tension in the story, that comes from going against your family, but choosing to do what you know is right.

Kvita does a great job with the magic system and world building, and there's a great balance of humor and gravity to the story. I really loved the urban setting of New York, and felt that Kvita did an amazing job of making it, its own character in the story. The book ends with a great twist, that definitely has me interested in where the story will go in the second book.

I’m honestly shocked this book isn’t being talked about more — it was incredible. If a book could be a green flag, this is it. The inclusion, accountability, and emotionally intelligent characters made this feel like a breath of fresh magical air.

The cast is diverse and relatable, and the writing avoids all the common fantasy microtropes I’ve grown tired of. Every character listens, grows, and actually takes responsibility — it was so refreshing.

The friendship between CZ and Joan? Absolute goals. I would read an entire novella just about their dynamic. And the slow burn between Joan and Astoria? Brutal in the best way — the 6am sword scene had me silently screaming.

The world building unfolds at a steady, engaging pace — then suddenly ¾ of the way through, the story explodes with twists I never saw coming. I could not put it down.

And the banter and inner monologues were the best. I am a sucker for good banter and this book delivered. I cackled, I snorted, and I smiled because this book had it all.

I’m thrilled this is a series, because I’m fully invested. Counting down the days until book 2.

Urban fantasy with a diverse chosen family theme? Yes please!

Joan is a witch who can't cast spells in her respectable, venerated, and politically powerful family. A rumor starts that a human was magically altered to be able to cast spells. Soon vampires, witch assassins, and spell makers are working together to find out to truth and who may have cast the alteration spell. The characters are memorable and lovable. Joan is a wonderful main character that you will be cheering on page by page.

Thanks to Orbit and Net Galley for the eARC. I'm already looking forward to the next Green Witch book.

✨ Huge thanks to AM Kvita and Orbit Books for the opportunity to read An Unlikely Coven early! ✨

This story truly resonated with me in ways I didn’t expect. At its heart, An Unlikely Coven explores what it means to be the black sheep of your family — that feeling of being misunderstood or not quite fitting in. Joan’s journey was powerful and validating, especially as she found a chosen family who loved her for who she is, not who they expected her to be.

Can we also talk about how iconic the friendship between Cz and Joan is? Their ride-or-die dynamic gave me life. Fierce, loyal, and full of heart — it’s the kind of friendship we all hope to have. And as a sister myself, I absolutely adored the relationship between Joan and Molly. Sure, they bicker like real siblings do, but when it counted, they showed up for each other without question.

Another standout element was how well AM Kvita wrote the villains. The portrayal of those clinging to power and status — even at the cost of morality — felt sharp and realistic. It’s a reminder of how the desire to maintain social standing can blind people to right and wrong. The antagonists were not just evil for the sake of it; their motives were chillingly believable.

An Unlikely Coven is about magic, yes — but more than that, it’s about identity, connection, and the messy, beautiful journey of finding your people. I absolutely adored it❤️

I really liked this! The found family, Joan’s characterization, although I wish she was a bit harder on her family at times. The pacing is up and down but a cozy read nonetheless.

A very subjective DNF at about 20 percent. This one had a premise that totally hooked me: NYC, feuding families, secret spells, witchy rivalry. But these elements came together in a way that didn’t hold me; I paused reading due to work and never felt compelled to return. Rating based on what I did read.

Joan seems to come from a very privileged and independent background – having spent years away studying what they wanted at school – but also feels deeply neglected by their family. Relatable! However, I personally needed a stronger reason for Joan to stick around and put up with her family besides the plot needing them to. The pacing was a bit slow, and tone was also bit more casual than I prefer. While I like humor, I tend to prefer a more satirical tone, and this was more “cozy,” verging on “whimsical.”

I say this to better help this book find its audience. I am certain many will love it!

I love a witch book and this is the first of a series. Joan is the black sheep of her powerful witch legacy family. She gathers a group of characters that were so fun to watch come together. It did drag some in the middle but overall I had a great time. Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was AWESOME. I started on my day off in the morning, and I'm not embarrassed to say that I essentially meshed with my couch and became one. I forgot to eat and drink; it was just so unserious when it mattered, real when it needed to be, funny, and different. I seriously welcomed the fact that not everything was perfect; things went awry, and that was okay! The found family trope was well done, and it was sweet. Thank you NetGalley and Orbit for approving me <3

Holy poopballs, you guys, this was fantastic. I wasn't initially feeling it and the first couple of chapters had me thinking that this might not be my kind of book, but it didn't take long for the endearing characters and the exquisite world-building to pull me in. I'm in awe that this is Kvita's debut novel.

An Unlikely Coven is an urban fantasy set in a New York where witches, vampires, fae, ghosts, and other magical creatures abound. The Greenwood witches are in charge of NYC's supernatural denizens, and, well … they can be a little overbearing at times. Enter Joan, recently returned home niece of head witch Valeria Greenwood and black sheep of the Greenwood family.

Joan isn't able to cast spells like other witches, but it turns out that she might just have a pretty important role in the magical world nevertheless. Her character is fantastic, and I loved her wit and sense of humor and her devotion to her friends. And I loved each and every one of her friends, too. There's CZ (Joan's best friend and vampire “royalty”), Mik (human accidentally turned semi-witch), Grace (spellmaker extraordinaire), Astoria (daughter of the head witch of California and beguiling love interest), and Wren (half witch, half fae). Together they make up the title's “unlikely coven” and they're all so ridiculously cute that I can't even stand it.

The whole “witch without powers who returns home to save the day” trope isn't exactly a new one, but it's really well done here. Joan might not be a traditional witch, but who really wants to be a traditional witch when it involves oppressing other magical creatures and having to constantly bow to the demands of your obnoxious family?

And the world-building? Swoon. It's beautiful. You feel like you're right there in New York City where magic flows through the air and supernatural beings walk amongst the humans. There's a mysterious (and dangerous!) night market selling all kinds of magical goods, a sort of witch-only subway system that zips around the city, and a NYC that might just be … sentient? And of course there's mystery and suspense and betrayal and all sorts of magic, and it all amounts to a book that's nearly impossible to put down.

Honestly, though, my review can't do this book justice. If you like witches and magic and feel-good found family stories and books with humor and heart, definitely consider giving this one a read. I'm so excited that this is going to be a new series, and I'm already looking forward to book two.

4.6 stars, rounded up.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Orbit Books for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review. Its expected publication date is October 28, 2025.

Kvita introduces a ragtag group of witches who are more likely to hex their own shoes than save the world—but that’s part of the fun. The story leans into its whimsical tone, with spells gone sideways, awkward alliances, and a setting that feels like your favorite cottagecore playlist got tangled in a thunderstorm. It’s lighthearted and endearing, even when the plot meanders like a broomstick with a broken GPS.

That said, the pacing can be uneven, and some character arcs feel like they’re still steeping. But Kvita’s voice is playful and full of promise, and the world she’s building has the kind of cozy magic that makes you want to curl up with a mug of something herbal and keep reading. It’s not perfect, but it’s a fun ride—and I’m curious to see where this coven flies next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for this ARC!

I was hooked from the very first chapter of this book—the unique worldbuilding, the strong and spunky voices of characters, and the high stakes tension were all so fresh and compelling. I only loved it more as I learned more about these characters, their pasts, and their world. I can't wait for the next installment!
