This is a very cute and inclusive cozy urban fantasy about growing up and finding yourself. It is chocked full of crazy magic, very sweet found family and a little bit of sapphic love. It was so much fun to read.
The first 40% of the book was a little slow, but then became very interesting. There is nothing really new or unique magic wise, but the story focuses a lot on the relationships Joan built once she truly became an adult and started to break away from her stifling family.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for the Advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I binge read this in under a day! 😍
An Unlikely Coven by A.M. Kvita
This book is chaotic magic, accidental bonding, and “what do you mean we’re responsible for saving the world?” energy — and I ate it up like a cursed pastry. Funny, heartfelt, messy in all the right ways. Four shining, witchy stars.
A Hot Mess, But Make It Magical, what more do you want?
I didn’t know what I was signing up for when I opened this, but by page ten I was side-eyeing magical objects and cackling at snarky spell mishaps. The tone is playful but never shallow — like the author handed you a glitter-covered chaos gremlin and whispered, “Trust me.” And somehow? You do.
This isn’t dark fantasy. It’s emotionally intelligent fantasy that doesn’t take itself too seriously — but still manages to punch you in the feelings when you least expect it.
Then we have the Cast of (Lovable) Wrecks
Let’s talk about this ridiculously charming crew.
Every single character is a mess, and I mean that as the highest compliment. They bicker, they botch spells, they say the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time — and I loved them for it.
The main character? Equal parts reluctant leader and inner monologue goldmine. She’s got that “accidentally responsible adult in a room full of gremlins” vibe. I related too hard.
The rest of the coven? Utter chaos gremlins. Endearing, ridiculous, and somehow essential. You’ll want to hug them and hex them in equal measure. They argue like siblings, plot like schemers, and show up for each other when it actually counts.
They feel like the kind of group you accidentally fall into — and then can’t live without. Classic found family, but with more glitter, fire hazards, and passive-aggressive spellwork.
There's a romantic thread buried in here — and I mean buried. It’s slow, awkward, a little spicy, and completely tangled up in unresolved feelings and magical mishaps. Don’t expect insta-love; expect drawn-out tension, emotional confusion, and one or two “oh no… I actually care about you” moments that hit harder than expected.
This story doesn’t stay in one emotional lane. You’ll laugh, wince, maybe tear up once or twice — and that balance keeps everything grounded. It’s magic with heart.
The world isn’t just a backdrop — it’s got real depth. The magic system is a little chaotic (on purpose), the setting is richly atmospheric, and there’s a clear tension between old traditions and rebellious spell-slingers trying to rewrite the rules.
Everything feels slightly off-kilter — like the magical version of a small town where everyone knows your business and your magical affinity. It’s weird. It’s cozy. It works. It gave me Gilmore Girls vibes!
4 stars — for the humor, the sass, the heart, and the witchy mayhem.
An Unlikely Coven is for readers who want:
A found family that banters, bickers, and backs each other up
A magic system that feels instinctive and alive
A slow-burn romance full of “oh no, it’s feelings” energy
And characters who are deeply flawed, emotionally real, and endlessly lovable
It’s not about being the most powerful witch in the room — it’s about finding the ones who’ll help you clean up the mess afterward… or make an even bigger one with you. And honestly? That’s kind of beautiful.
Thank you Netgalley, Orbit Books and AM Kvita for the eARC. I was under no obligation to review, all opinions are my own.

Love love love this debut novel! The character writing was fantastic, I loved all of them and the banter. The world building was thought out as well. The it is cozy in a way but with somewhat high stakes. I cannot wait for the next one.

Okay!! Seriously, this one was so much fun! What a binge read of a book! We’ve got witches, vampires, fae — a world full of magic realism. We have family drama (imagine being forgotten by your entire family the day you come into town and they’re all like … whoops) We have found family style friendships that make me smile and so much humour and hijinks!
An Unlikely Coven was such a fun read! Definitely one to pick up! Thank you Orbit books for the e-arc and the chance to read early!
