I love sci-fi, with a passion, so ought to have loved this book. Why didn't I?
The basic premise was quite simple, reminding me of pulp fiction of the 50s/60s. In itself, that didn't need to be too bad, but also carried forward was the treatment of women. I'm far from insisting that all books feature modern, feminist-type women, but as a female reader I found the treatment of women by the 'hero' to be far too annoying. For a book written in the 50s, even 60s i wouldn't have commented on it. But this is 70 years later, so it was a bit offensive.
I also found the writing style a bit annoying, but that is just my preference.
Other readers may enjoy this book - probably male readers, though.

Ross is a quiet professor in Indiana. He has planned a three-week trek through the woods in Vermont. He meets Jay, a woman who is so rude. She treats everyone as if they are beneath her. Ross cannot stop helping her. They begin travelling together while trying to avoid a military event in the woods.
The book has fast pace, the characters are developed, and it is written in the third person point of view. There is love and comedy in the story. It was a quick quirky read.

I thought I would like this one. It made me think of Patchett's Year of Wonder, but unfortunately it fell flat for me.
