🌲 ┊ “ when we're alone together, we always end up dying. ”

Thank you for this ARC!

After surviving a tragedy during a ski trip, the remaining six (of eight) members of a friend group come back together for a weekend trip to a private island – courtesy of one of the friend’s rich parents.

Firstly, it feels so unbelievably unlikely that any of these kids’ parents would ever let them out of their sights, let alone let them take a helicopter to a private island with a few hours notice. Hell, one of the parents handed her daughter a box of condoms and drove off before even seeing if she made it into the house.

Once they made it to the island, they find a painting of the Donner party with eight figures painted: two of them have bright red X’s crossed over them. This is the main source of mystery throughout the novel, and I was anxiously awaiting the reveal of who was slowly picking off the group one by one. However, when it was finally revealed, it sort of felt like it came out of nowhere? My smile literally fell when I realized where the story was going.

Lastly, while I appreciate the trigger warning at the beginning of the book, it COMPLETELY spoils what happens during the first trip (and even some of the second). Rather than it being the first page and completely unavoidable, I think it would have been better if it vaguely stated that there were some intense themes in the novel and then linked a webpage you could go to for further information; then, whoever needed the spoilers could get them while the people who could go without could continue on.

This was a fun young adult thriller, centered on 6 friends who spend a weekend after high school graduation at a secluded mansion for a last hurrah before they all move on to the next phase of their lives. These people were survivors of a horrific ski trip a couple years back, which makes them somewhat isolated from their peers and also leaves them with unresolved trust issues with each other. When it becomes clear that someone has an ulterior motive for bringing them to the mansion, they must fight for their lives. The story is told alternating through their POVs.

The story was cleverly done and I went back and forth trying to determine who the villain was. When it all came out, it made total sense and was scary and tragic all at the same time. The book was atmospheric and you could really feel the characters' fear as they realize that there is something sinister happening. They acted like teenagers, which I appreciated, making a mix of mature and less mature decisions. I did find their voices to be somewhat interchangeable, and wished they were a little more distinctive; there were times where I had to go back and remind myself whose chapter I was reading. I had to suspend my disbelief a bit about the fact that these people seemed to have the freedom and money to take so many vacations while they were in high school, but then again I never had an uber rich friend who could fund things like that, so maybe it's a thing.

Overall, I enjoyed this and thought it hit the right creepiness and tone of a YA novel, with good suspense and a well-thought-out storyline. I'd recommend to those who like mysteries and locked-room type thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is exactly what a young adult thriller should be! Gripping, twisty, emotional, and very clever—the stakes are high from the first moment and never drop. The characters are all both extremely flawed and sympathetic in their own ways, and they make plenty of logical decisions and come up with compelling theories while facing the threat of an unknown killer with them on a remote island. I felt compelled to keep reading all the way through to find out the truth, as each of my own theories was proven wrong.

This one was a fun thriller, and I enjoyed reading it! I will say that there might have been too many POVs for me to follow coherently at times, but I still liked it! The pace was fast and I remained engaged the entire time 3.70 stars

A group of eight friends go on a ski trip and only six survive the trip. No one really knows what happens. After graduation, Sadie rents a mansion on a remote island for the class. Only these six surviving kids show up. No one else can get there. Clearly someone is out to get these six kids. But who? And why? It was just ok to me.

This is a young adult And Then There Were None. I wish I could read it for the first time again. After the first couple of pages I wasn't sure I would like it, then I TORE through 200 pages like it was nothing. There were good twists and everyone was a suspect. There Were a couple of ways I thought it could resolve, and the end was satisfying. The story is told from multiple points of view which allows for more depth of character development than what we would have gotten otherwise. This is great for readers of Karen McManus or Holly Jackson.

Sadie, Will, Isla, Anthony, Emily, and Charlie are survivors of a horrific ski tragedy that resulted in the deaths of their guide and two friends. The details of the deaths are hazy and hushed up by Sadie's wealthy family. The six teens all deal with the outcome of their tragedies in different ways -- some relentlessly moving on with their future ambitions, while others cope with intense therapy or even alcohol.

When a viral TikTok famous mansion becomes available for rent, Sadie's friends pressure her to rent it. The six survivors then arrive at the remote island getaway and strange things start to happen. There's a haunting picture out of place of the pristine paradise; the servants are mysteriously missing; and all form of contact has been cut off.

The teens' unease quickly transforms to paranoia and terror as, one by one, they fall. Will the survivors endure another tragedy? Or has someone--or something-- come for revenge?

I wanted to love this so much! This has a wonderful premise, but the multiple POVs blended together too much for the read to be enjoyable. I DNFed it around 60% in.

Thank you, Netgalley, for the opportunity to read the ARC.

What A great book! Starts off slow so you can get the full story as you are dealing with two different time lines. But stick with it as you see things through different POV as more to the story comes out and you keep guessing who is behind the craziness happening in the present! Love this book!

Such a page turner! I tried to guess who was behind it all but I never guessed this one! I could not put this down and wanted to binge it. A really good YA thriller!

The type of story I love to read in a sitting in between heavier books. I love these types of stories but this one didn't quite hit. It was easy for the different povs to bleed together which I think was one of the main issues. Another being the tone lacking impact. It was such an interesting premise and I did enjoy it to a point but felt lacking.
Thank you Netgalley and publishing house for the arc!

At its core, This is Where We Die is a chilling, locked-room mystery following a group of teens who have already survived a major crisis, only to find themselves once again trapped in a life-or-death scenario. The story explores themes of trauma, survival, and trust through multiple perspectives—six, in fact—which could have provided a rich and layered narrative. Unfortunately, the execution falls short.

The shifting points of view lack distinct voices, which made it challenging to keep track of who was narrating. I found myself repeatedly flipping back to clarify which character was speaking. While this structure aimed to give us a full view of the unfolding events and blur the lines of truth and perception, the effect was often more confusing than illuminating. Additionally, the snippets included at the ends of some chapters (possibly meant to mimic media posts or offhand remarks) added little to the plot and often restated what we already knew.

Thematically, the book is heavy—it comes with numerous trigger warnings including death, murder, cannibalism, substance abuse, mental health struggles, and more. While I appreciate transparency about difficult content, one major trigger warning served as an immediate spoiler for a key element of the plot, removing a layer of suspense that would have made the mystery more engaging.

There are moments where the present-day narrative mixes effectively with flashbacks, creating emotional depth and raising intriguing questions about memory and guilt. However, the tone of the book felt oddly light given the gravity of the subject matter, and the resolution, while complete, lacked emotional impact for me.

In short, while the premise had potential and the mystery posed interesting questions, the storytelling choices—particularly the indistinct voices and inconsistent tone—made it difficult for me to fully connect with the characters or the plot. This wasn’t quite my cup of tea, but readers who enjoy survival thrillers with complex backstories might find more to appreciate.

This murder-mystery novel told in multiple points of view tells the story of six high school seniors who survived a horrific skiing accident, the details of which come out during the course of the novel. After returning from their ski trip, the six survivors keep mum about what happened. Eighteen months later, they are graduating high school and decide to have a party on a private island. Once the original six arrive, they start to die off, and none of them know who the murderer is. Or do they? This book kept me on my toes, and I loved the multiple perspectives. I will definitely add this one to my high school library.

Eight friends left for a skiing weekend… only six returned. Now those friends are headed out to throw an epic graduation party on a private island. What could go wrong?

If you love, Agatha Christie, you will absolutely enjoy this homage to her work. In fact, the name of the island is. Christie Island and several characters share names with the characters from her classic And Then There Were None (although if I’m being honest, a few characters from the original were left out, and one character’s name was used twice. This is a picky thing that only diehard Christie fans will notice lol). The plot is fast-paced and fun, and while I had the murderer figured out, it was still a fun twist at the end. I recommend any thriller lovers looking for an engaging read!

This Is Where We Die follows six friends who rent a house on a remote island to celebrate their graduation. There used to be eight people in the friend group but when they went on a ski trip only the six friends made it out alive. Someone is wanting the friend group to pay for what happened during the ski trip.

I wished that the book didn't have the names for the chapters. I understand why she wrote it the way she did to get everyone's point of view. I think this book was well wrote and keep the readers guessing what was going to happen. The characters will have flashbacks to ski trip and what happened to present. There were numerous times I tried to guess the ending but was not successful how it was going to end.

Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks for the ARC copy for an honest review.

This is a fun "locked-room" mystery as the students were once trapped in the snow and now they've been invited to Christies Island which includes 10 bedrooms, a private chef, and a bar. But each of them have secrets--some that others know--and some they keep to themselves And a mysterious painting on the wall continues to have a big red X marking them out one by one! Who will survive, who will die...and why???
