I thoroughly enjoyed " High Flight: A Pilot's Journey Through Life" by Richard Hess. The title of the book first caught my attention. I have this poem on a plaque. It was my father's, an Air Force jet pilot who was a generation before Hess. The book is about what it takes to be successful not only in a cockpit of a jet, but in all aspects of life. The author details the many steps in his flying career. I now have a new appreciation for the sacrifices, the rigors, and the discipline of our military and commercial pilots. The author's honest evaluations of people and himself is fearless and fair, albeit I sometimes wondered if Hess cared what the individuals thought about his words. The author repeatedly nods to the Lord's Providence in his life and how many times it made an impact on his life. I appreciate this.
The book is conversational in tone, well-paced, well-organized, and informative. Hess, in fact, reminds me of my dad: detailed, honest, courageous, respectful, ready to have fun, and absolutely in love with flight. I highly recommend "High Flight." As the author says, " I believe that what you do with wisdom gained is more important than the experience that gave you that wisdom." Glean wisdom form the author's experiences around the world and at home. Discover what it means to
"have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..."
(John Gillespie Magee, Jr. , "High Flight")
