Thanks to everyone for granting me this ARC!
To be honest I was too excited and actually bought the e-book on release day.
In any case it was such breath of fresh air for me (usually not a poetry fan) and recognized myself and my struggles in many of the verses, even when it didn't fit into my character (for example, I am not faithful at all).
I wish more people would be as well-intentioned and open-minded to reach those who are not of similar mindset.
I definitely recommend this one especially to people (again, like myself) who struggle with guilt over not meeting someone's expectations or not being career/competition oriented and prefering rest. I definitely eased some of my guilt over choosing a more gentle path due to my anxiety.

I had not heard of David Gate before, but the cover and title of this book were the first things that got my attention. I loved this collection of poetry. His words are relatable and relevant to today's society. I loved that each chapter started off with a mini essay. This collection of poetry and prose was a real treat.

Overall a beautiful collection of poems and essays. Some felt more relatable than others which is to be expected in a collection. I really enjoyed this though.

Popular Instagram poet David Gates' book of essays and poems highlights life, community, and navigating a world when all you want to do is stay home in a funny and heartfelt debut book, A Rebellion of Care.
A Rebellion of Care holds both compassion for humanity and a call to create kinder spaces in our daily lives. From poems about parenting to essays navigating religious values as well as frustration with the church, Gates's writing style brings a practical look at what it means to be human in the twenty-first century.

I found this to be a wonderful book ... a perfect read for these times.
The teaser lines are a perfect choice:
---------------
yes, everyone is struggling right now
so please be gracious
be kind & patient, but subvert
every institution that relies on our suffering
---------------
It is important for us to be kind in difficult times, but it is also important to push back against "every institution that relies on our suffering"

With an a solarpunk vibe, author David Gate writes poetry about topics pertinent for today's world. Divided into ten sections, each introduced with a short essay, Gate's poems address climate change, racial discrimination, the marginalizatoion of LGBTQ+ Americans, religion versus spirituality, and more. Each poem is artfully crafted and capable of moving any generous heart. A Rebellion of Care was a pleasure to read and provoked my mind to rethink the issues we face now and for generations to come. And although I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review, I will be purchasing a copy for my bookshelf.

Just what we need in the summer of 2025. A book of thoughts and poems reflecting the last 5 years. If you aren’t a fan of the current politic landscape and have an “In this house we believe…” flag then this book is what you need to not feel alone.

I cannot wait to have a paper copy of A Rebellion of Care. These poems and essays have met me exactly where I’m at right now with so many self-proclaimed Christians spewing so much hate.

I was not familiar with Gate before this collection.. I know others enjoy him and I appreciate that his self help approach is one that's popular so I'll be the outlier who finds this trite. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and Convergent Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A quick read but a really great one. The poetry is lyrical and poignant, the essay parts are pointed and moving. I feel inspired and understood after reading this which is exactly what I want from a book of poetry. I’ll be rereading this one often.

A Rebellion of Care by David Gate--This collection of essays and poems releases on 7/15. I follow David Gate on IG and have enjoyed the poetry he shares on the platform so getting this ARC was pleasing. I like his style of poetry that is straightforward and timely in content. This would be a good book to read a poem or two daily and let yourself think a bit. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

I enjoyed reading all the poems and essays in book. I first read David Gate's work on Instagram and I appreciate his voice that encourages us to take a good look at humanity with care especially in this current world that we live in. I think this is a great book to own and gift which offers encouraging words whenever you need it.

A Rebellion of Care will break your heart, it will beg you to challenge social norms, it will be the mirror that you need to see yourself without the mask of consumerism, without chasing fake happiness in the cracks of playing happy family but it will also uplift you.
It will help you feel seen and heard. It will validate your journey, your emotions and opinions.
It will teach you how being scared and fearing and loving without shame is okay, in fact its what you should do. Fall in love, with yourself, with your friends, with your partner and with your family.
It will humour you, give you a reason, an excuse to just be you without explanation, free of judgement.
"So what possible chance do our souls have." - David Gate
Take a chance and read this book because it will change you.

Very relatable collection of poetry and words - encompassing life. This collection starts off strong with experiential poems and I feel like anyone could relate to them. If you enjoy poetry and short essays about life, this would be perfect for you.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for my copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was surprised by this poetry book - I found it incredibly healing and freeing, and I love how David brought everything together. I enjoyed his snark and humor as I read along. The more I kept reading, the more I wanted to take part in this Rebellion of Care for the rest of my life.

This is such a beautiful and relatable collection of poems. It’s showing that life is too short but also so long so we must enjoy it the way we desire while we can. I really enjoyed these and I love that it gives a whole new outlook on life when you’re getting caught up in it all.

Elizabeth from the Convergent Books Marketing Team kindly reached out to me and offered a copy of this poetry collection based on my interest in a collection I read earlier in the year (Victoria Hutchins' "Make Believe"). I must admit, I had not heard of David Gate before, and prior to reading this I was not aware of his Instagram or any of his content--so I went into this with completely fresh eyes! This collection has some wonderful overarching themes on community, togetherness, and humanity, with a slant towards religion and of course the social media references sprinkled here and there.
I enjoyed this collection! Unfortunately it didn't speak to me as much as Hutchins' work does, but I do think it's full of heart and the care of the author is clear to see in every section. Standouts to me were "Tell Me About Your Person," "Nomenclature," and "Vinegar." I'd recommend this collection to people that enjoy lighthearted poetry, parents of any kind, and folks that want to spread a little more joy to those around them.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Convergent Books for an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book!
*This review will be posted to my Goodreads and Storygraph on 7/9!

I've seen most of David's poetry in this book featured on his IG, but it is nice to have it all in one place and to take my time dissecting it. His words are rich with emotion and everything is through provoking. I related to so much of his content and literally felt my heart ache at times with raw truth. David is a genius at expression. I highly recommend his work!

I'd like to give my sincere thanks to Convergent Books for permitting me to access the ARC of this book via NetGalley.
My first impression of reading A Rebellion of Care: Poems and Essays was that i found the book interesting and quite engaging in some ways. And personally, i like the majority of the poems i that could resonate with. And as for the essays, i like how some of the writings could resonate with ourlives or rather, ourselves. But some just don't. This book is also my first exposure to the works of David Gate.
But i found this book is so subjective so it's pretty hard to rate. And i could imagine there might be some people who would love this book with all of their heart, yet i also could imagine some won't. It's not a bad book, it's just subjective. And i personally having a good time reading this book, so it was an okay read for me.
