Did I fly through an entire series within four days JUST so I could listen to this?
Yes, yes I did.
And I regret nothing at all.
Because Sweet Obsession turned out to be my favourite in the Dark Olympus series, slightly surpassing Electric Idol.

The world Katee Robert has created is fun and tense, sparkling and chaotic. Reading about the 13, about influential families, conflicts and intrigues has felt like the most fun soap opera ever. And Sweet Obsession, imo, was like a stark turning point, setting a bit of a different tone.

On one hand, it was this beautiful love story, the captor and his captive, the man in a leading position of Olymp and the son of the traitor who worked hard to bring the city down. Star crossed, yes, but more than that. Poseidon and Icarus both come with baggage, both need to learn a lot about themselves and I just loved the way they so naturally created a safe space for each other. And within a world that is on the brink of war and chaos, nonetheless.

On the other hand, there is said impending conflict and Sweet Obsession definitely turned the tides. Icarus' legacy and Poseidon's role gave them weight, yet somehow both characters felt like unwilling participants at times, helpless bystanders at others. Listening to the story, I felt the same. The big players are there, albeit subdued, plot twists came out of nowhere and the political arc took a crucial turn - several, actually. And while that aspect was rather slow paced in the book, it came in with a crash. Watching all this unfold while the MMCs evolved, as characters and partners, was as tense and foreboding as it was beautiful.

While I liked the audiobook version for all instalments in the series, this one was a particular favourite. Will Watt was an AMAZING addition and the perfect choice imo - he really gave Icarus an extra level of character.

Now I am hooked and impatient because, well, we might have a timeline now (sort of) but with what can happen in Olymp in just a few days, I expect a lot of drama in the next two books. I just love how Katee Robert found a way to perfectly conclude this story of Icarus and Poseidon.

Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert

*Sweet Obsession*, the eighth book in the *Dark Olympus* series, delivers a steamy and emotional retelling of Poseidon and Icarus. With strong captor/captive dynamics, slow-burn romance, and emotional growth, the story explores trust, vulnerability, and healing. The chemistry between the leads is intense, though some may find the romance develops quickly. Still, it’s a compelling addition to the series with layered characters and high stakes.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.

Katee Robert hooked me in with her modern, sizzling retelling of Poseidon and Icarus in Sweet Obsession.

Olympus is on the brink of war and everything could hit the fan any moment. Icarus is the enemy of Olympus. Being part of the inner circle that helped take down the protection that has guarded Olympus for centuries. Poseidon has captured Icarus and is trying to figure out how to default all the information he knows. The attraction between Poseidon and Icarus is obvious from the moment they need. Being on opposite sides, it creates a lot of push and pool for the two of them. Neither one of these characters are quite like we remember from our Greek mythology, however that’s part of what makes a story as good and a spicy as it is. We see a prisoner show that there’s more to him than meet the eye and a God who has a much softer side than one could’ve imagined. this slow burn, enemies to lovers, retake on Greek mythology was a page turner for me. Well, how is it a page Turner when you’re listening to it, anyway the narrators did an amazing job of bringing Icarus and Poseidon to life in a way that we haven’t seen before.

I have to admit it has been a hot minute since I have read Katee Robert. I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed her writing. Sweet Obsession takes a nice new spin on Poseidon and Icarus. Their story is captivating, unexpected, and thoroughly enjoyable.

I loved the relationship between Icarus and Poseidon. That being said this felt like a bit of a filling book for the over arching plot.

Such an amazing book. I loved hearing how Poseidon and Icarus form a relationship. The smut is so good in this one. Loved seeing how they both work together in order to become a duo in both the bedroom and starting to show outside of the bedroom. I can't wait to see how they progress in the future. Love seeing the 13 trying to figure out how to handle Circe and the issues that she is bringing to Olympus. Over all a great book, with great smut, and Greek mythology who could ask for more.

This is a sweet love story that had me blushing, smiling and giggling all at once. I loved their story together, Icarus and Poseidon(Proteus). The sweetness between these two was adorable.

I love the relationship in this book between Poseidon and Icarus 💕 Poseidon seems like an adorable huge teddy bear and I only wish good things for his character in future books.

Running alongside their relationship is the ongoing drama in Olympus. There's backstabbing, alliances, coups and nobody can really trust anybody. It's gaining momentum and hopefully someone can stop Circe soon.

I found the politics in this one a tad confusing. I had to really concentrate on who's who and who stood with who. Maybe I just wanted it to be more about Poseidon and Icarus. But their scenes were pretty hot.🔥 Super duper spicy! 🥵 I loved listening to this on audio because the narrators (Will M. Watt & Alex Moorcock) did a fantastic job. The emotion in their voices elevated the book even more.

Sweet Obsession - Katee Robert

📖 This is book 8 in the Dark Olympus Series - so if you haven’t read those yet… circle back to Neon Gods to get yourself started!
If you, like me, have been waiting for this book since you finished Dark Restraint then you should know Sweet Obsession picks up moments after that ending. This book spans only a few days in Olympus as we follow Icarus, who’s being held captive by Poseidon. Olympus is on the eve of destruction, with Circe at their oceanfront gates waiting to make her move, Icarus and Poseidon both have difficult decisions to make.

📚 The plot here just keeps plotting. I cannot express how much I love the intricate web of the city and characters that Katee has created here. Every single character has been built up in a way that makes them credible and understandable. The drama, the spice, the politics…this series is a smash. Icarus and Poseidon both get explored and developed in a way that moves the plot right along. Also huge props to Katee for creating Poseidon as a mid forties man who’s got a belly and is a gentle giant. I am here for that type of inclusion. I could not put this book down. I am already looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Shoutout to @NetGalley @sourcebooks and @katee_robert for the advanced copy of this book! It is set to publish April 1, 2025!

🌟 This book has explicit sexual content and features a MM relationship. If you’ve already loved Dark Olympus so far then you must request this from your library immediately!

The 8th installment of the Dark Olympus series focuses on Poseidon & Icarus and the aftermath of the wards falling. Olympus is on the brink of war and Circe is at their gate, but hasn’t Circe been at their gate for a while now? This installment gave us some good power moves between Zeus and Hera that have me looking forward to book #9.

I was excited for the pairing of Poseidon & Icarus, but they ended up not feeling like a genuine match to me. I thought there was so much potential for some real hot spice and Poseidon ending up with a submissive side, but that too felt pretty mid to me. Katee is usually my spice queen! I think this whole book just ended up being easy to forget.

I am still looking forward to the final installments! Bring on Zeus and Hera!!

Thank you NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for the ALC of Sweet Obsession in exchange for my honest review.

Icarus and Proteus are so cute. This enemies(ish) to lovers mythology retelling was amazing. I love that Katee always has her MCs both have a part in saving each other and that their relationships are balanced in the some days you give more than you get but it always balances out and this book was no exception. Love, love, love this book.

3.75 stars. I love this series but this one felt a bit instalove ish. I absolutely adore their relationship I love that they are exactly what the other needs in a relationship and how they grew together but there wasn’t enough development I feel. Also the plot didn’t have much growth to it despite being the reason they were enemies. Still loved it and this series just this one isn’t my favorite.

Sweet Obsession is amazing!!!

Narrated by Alex Moorcock & Will Watt in dual format. The story is told in a first person dual POV.

It is a great story of Poseidon and Icarus and I devoured this audiobook. Katee has delivered such a beautiful and dark story for us to feel deeply in our story. I couldn't put it down. This captive romance is perfect.

I loved the story between Poseidon and Icarus. I think these two are my new favorite. I will say, I felt like the back story of Circe trying to invade takes forever and even then doesn't get anywhere. But, I was perfectly happy with hearing more about Poseidon and Icarus. The audiobook was great; I especially loved the narrator for Icarus!

So far, I think this is my favourite of the Dark Olympus series. I feel weird saying that, with it being an MM story and KR getting some really weird attention because of that, but that's not why I liked it so much. I liked it because I really loved the characters. It would have worked equally as well if they hadn't both been men. Poseidon is this absolute cinnamon roll of a man and Icarus is basically Astarion from BG3, but not a vampire.

While this is cinnamon roll/spiky prickly, it's also captor/captive, which I think could have gone really wrong. But KR was able to make it work in a non-gross, bad power dynamic way.

In addition to the romance, we're also getting towards whatever the finale of the political plotline will be, as there are only 2 books left in the series to wrap things up! Circe is basically knocking on Olympus' door, but things may not be as straight forward as they seem.

I really enjoyed the narration, as I am a complete sucker for Will M Watt, and I also like Alex Moorcock. I thought they narrated really well together and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another audio narrated by them.

I am so enjoying this series! I can't wait to read the last two, even though I'll be sad that it's over.

"Love you, Big Guy" UGH MY HEART. The chemistry between the leads? Off the charts. Like, I had to pause and fan myself a few times—it was that intense. This gave me the same feels/vibes as Neon Gods which got me hooked on the series in the first place. Excellent narrators.

What I loved most was how real the characters felt. They had depth, flaws, and actual emotional growth, which made the spicy scenes hit even harder (in the best way). Plus, the pacing was spot-on—there was never a dull moment, and the buildup kept me hooked from start to finish.

It’s got that perfect blend of heat, heart, and just enough drama to keep you listening til 2am. If you’re into bold characters, sizzling tension, and a romance that doesn’t hold back, Sweet Obsession is 100% worth the read.

Thanks to NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for an eAudio ARC of this title in exchange for my review.

Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert is a brilliant return to the super sexy and complicated world of the Dark Olympus series. There's plenty of excellent spice with amazing chemistry, a couple pairing with romance that is absolutely adorable, political intrigue, as well as compelling and addictive overall series story advancement. The author definitely has this whole series plotted tightly and leaves the reader wanting more.

Of note is the audio narrators who make the chemistry of our main characters leap off the page. Their performances make it all believable, endearing and intense. Additionally praiseworthy is the diverse cast of characters, representation of love, expression of attraction and passion that Katee Robert infuses into all the Dark Olympus books. As a librarian, I can always count on solid readers advisory for a wide range of readers.

***3.0 Stars***

Overall,
I really did like Poseidon and Icarus's relationship. Both were broken in their own ways and found a stronger self with each other. I have been reading this series since day one and I do love Katee. I do think the "mystery" has gone on so long its hard to stay interested in the greater plot of Olympus. This book only takes place over a few days and there was definitely a feeling of insta love. Yet with the tension so high it is somewhat believable. I do know I will continue to read this series. Despite what appears like a low rating, I would say this is a perfectly fine series. Not necessarily ground breaking but almost a comfort.

Audiobook - I listened to an Audio ARC of this and you can always guarantee that a Katee Robert book is going to have a great narrator.

I'm convinced Katee Robert could write a phone book, and I'd still read it. I love it. The audio was fantastic, and I loved the passion between these characters.Icarus and Poseidon were amazing. I was so excited to get more details about Poseidon and his crew. I think the romance with Icarus will catch a lot of people, even if we know the book is about them. I'm super excited to see where the story continues to go.

As this is one of the middle books in this series I felt a bit lost regarding the political system and history of the story so I wouldn’t say this could be read as a standalone. However, I don’t think this is a fault of the series but rather my reading it out of order so I won’t rate it on this factor. The narration was great and I loved the two different narrators for each protagonist, something that I don’t think is often done when both main characters are the same gender but shows that the same effort at straight romances as been made. I’m not familiar with the story of Poseidon and Icarus but found this retelling enjoyable nonetheless. I think it is something I could recommend but probably wouldn’t reread. 3.5 stars.

Thanks, Sourcebooks and Dreamscape for the ARC and ALC.

Well, the first thing I have to say is that at this point none of the books are standalones and rather episodes in the saga of Dark Olympus. You definitely need the info from the previous books to follow all that is happening now that Circe finally reached The Wall and is ready to attack the city.

In this chapter, we follow Poseidon and Icarus. At the end of the previous book, Icarus sacrificed himself and stayed back so that Ariadne and The Minotaur could flee safely. Now, the story starts exactly at that point and Icarus is now held captive by Poseidon.

Poseidon is a gentle giant who doesn't know what to do with the charming, manipulative Icarus in his hands. Icarus immediately reverts to seduction as this is how he has survived till now and soon succeeds, while falling himself for the tender and unexpectedly submissive Poseidon. They eventually fall deeply in love.

I must confess that for a book this long I hoped we'd have more development of their relationship. We shift from the romance to the political machinations all the time and I felt both needed more depth.

I loved them together and completely bought their romance (they fall in love in two days!) because of the stellar narration. of the audiobook. Narrated dual style by Alex Moorcock (Poseidon) and Will Watt (Icarus), they sold me completely on the chemistry! Alex is still new to me, but it's no secret that I absolutely love Will Watt and he's amazing in this one - a very nuanced performance. I expected nothing less!

We have two more books until this royal mess leads to either victory of The Thirteen or the fall of Olympus. We shall see!

Rep: queer romance. Also, in this series, everyone is queer.

Content notes: mentions of parental abuse, attempted spousal murder. Torture (on page, but brief), violence, murder, elements of duchies consent (due to captor/captive dynamics), panic attack (on page)
