This Oxford history of World War Two proposes two provide a context through both words and pictures of the great cataclysm of World War Two. I believe it largely succeeds.
To be sure, this is not a book that will be picked up and read cover to cover as this is more of a reference work, to be dipped into from time to time to whatever period of the war is of interest. As a WWII history buff, it is indeed interesting to see so many illustrations and pictures I have never encountered before.
This is an interesting and well-written of the war, including the rise of communism in the Soviet Union and the rise of facism in Italy and Germany. This is a work I have found wanting to drop into and read, though again not from cover to cover. As a reference work, this is a terrific work. The illustrations alone tell the story well and remind me of there American Heritage account from years ago, which served a similar purpose.
As this carries the Oxford press brand, to be sure this is more centered on the British perspective, though I think that is also fascinating since the British Empire was fighting for years under mortal threat until America ever joined.
A very worthwhile account.

As the Greatest Generation slips away from us, books like Overy's are more and more crucial to keep their stories alive. His book is a wonderful introduction to the conflict, providing an overview that will delight both seasoned history readers and those new to the story. Recommended.
