After a recent trip to Austria, I was drawn to this historical murder mystery set in 18th-century Vienna—and it did not disappoint. The book expertly weaves historical fiction with a gripping whodunit, immersing readers in the intrigue and elegance of Vienna's golden age.
As the second installment in the series, the story follows Lorenzo Da Ponte, who finds himself in an unexpected and perilous situation. What starts as a favor to his barber—a simple visit to a diplomat—quickly spirals into a nightmare when one of the diplomat’s friends is found dead. To make matters worse, Da Ponte becomes the prime suspect. His only way out? Infiltrate the household to uncover the true murderer or face the gallows.
The mystery is richly layered, with at least seven suspects and plenty of red herrings to keep readers guessing until the very end. The author masterfully balances the tension of the investigation with vivid depictions of 18th-century Vienna, creating an atmosphere that feels both authentic and absorbing.
Whether you’re a fan of historical fiction or a good old-fashioned murder mystery, this book delivers a thrilling and satisfying read. It’s a compelling addition to the series and one that will leave you eager to pick up the next installment.
