Book Review: A Tender, Soulful Tribute to Kentucky Roots
This beautiful and deeply moving novel is a love letter to family, memory, and the enduring spirit of a small mountain town in Kentucky. Centered around the impending loss of Orson Caskill—patriarch, philosopher, and storekeeper of Osier County—the story brings together five people whose lives have been indelibly shaped by Orson’s love, wisdom, and quiet strength. As they gather for a family wedding, each voice in the novel offers a rich and intimate portrait, not only of Orson but of themselves, revealing the intricate ties that bind them to their land, their past, and one another.
With each chapter narrated by a different character, from an academic in Chicago to a local outlaw, the novel paints a vivid mosaic of Appalachian life. It challenges the notion that true meaning and connection are found only in places like New York or California. Instead, it shows us that deep understanding, generosity, and joy thrive just as powerfully in the “hollers” of Kentucky, where life may be quieter, but never less profound.
The postlude, told through Orson’s granddaughter, adds a heartfelt and hopeful coda, as she seeks to build a future inspired by the lessons and legacy of her family.
This is a novel to be savored—an ode to storytelling, landscape, and the powerful currents of love that flow through generations. Readers will come away with a renewed appreciation for the hidden richness of rural life and the beauty of holding on to one’s roots.

An excellent read for any and all readers! Author comes at you with both barrels and knocks you out of your shoes! Great job fleshing out all the characters. I give this book FIVE stars! Definitely recommend!

A profoundly thought provoking, unique literary fiction story told from multiple perspectives of the various members of Orson Caskells family (including Orson himself), and the ways in which each of these people encountered events in their lives and how said events shaped their lives down the track.
The title "Sunday People" encapsulates Orson and his family members who all attend their church but also the ways in which they come together whether it be working on the land or as a community to help others in need. It also shows their devotion to and love for Orson in the lead up to his death.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would like to thank both Net galley as well as the publisher for the opportunity to review the ARC of this story.
