This is a terrific book about homesteading, with A-Z words and definitions told in a fun alphabet book format. This would be perfect for a read-aloud in a library, or at school. It's also a fun way to learn more about farm life and makes a good visual dictionary for the classroom.

I highly recommend this book for schools, libraries, and homeschool families.

This is a very clever alphabet book. Not only does it go through various letters of the alphabet, but this book also makes use of alliteration to further reinforce each letter—a skillful linguistic choice that really sets this book apart from most alphabet books.

There is even a fun activity list at the end of the book to help engage kids in some of the activities mentioned throughout the book.

I really loved this one for its subject matter and use of alliteration to reinforce learning. My only gripe is that it does not cover every letter in the alphabet. There are a few that are missing.

This book is SO, SO cute! A must have for any homesteader with kids. I love the page at the end that gives tips for how kids can get involved. It's a fun and innovative way for the littlest homesteaders to learn their ABC's, but with beautiful illustrations and relatable examples that older kids and adults can appreciate as well. I can't wait to purchase a hard copy for our bookshelf!

A fantastic alliterative, acrostic alphabet book that really spells out the heart of homesteading with cozy illustrations.

M is for Mason Jar is a charming ABC book with sweet, nostalgic illustrations and clever alliterations that capture the spirit of modern homesteading. I really enjoyed how each letter highlighted a simple, hands-on activity—from baking biscuits to scattering seeds—which makes it fun and educational for kids (and honestly, adults too). The illustrations are super cute and cozy, perfectly matching the homestead vibe.

X is always a tough letter in alphabet books, and I think they handled it as well as possible—it didn’t feel like a total stretch. Overall, it’s a lovely little picture book that blends old-fashioned values with a modern touch, encouraging kids to appreciate nature, work with their hands, and embrace the joys of homegrown living.

I want to start of by saying thank you to the author, publisher, and netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly had no idea homesteading was an actual thing and had to Google it after reading. I didn't think it would be popular in the UK because of the lack of land available but apparently not! It does seem very peaceful and idealistic so honestly more power to those homesteading.

This book would be perfect for kids to get to know more about homesteading and what it actually means, as well as be more relatable to kids that are brought up in that environment. I can see both demographics being able to enjoy this and learn more about it.

M is for Mason Jar follows the 'A is for Apple' blah blah blah format and most of them generally fit quite well and are done in a clever way. X is a bit dodgy and I don't really understand it. As a 21 year old if I'm struggling to decipher it then a child will probably struggle a little too.

There's also a list at the end of the book with little bullet points on how you can get the kids involved in homesteading and I really like this. It's nothing too major and difficult and would be perfect for kids. Little things like mixing batter or preparing the ingredients or pick fruit from the trees. Some of these can apply to kids that aren't homesteading too which is great!

I wish there was more text per page. I liked the illustrations and the words generated to represent something from homesteading for each letter. The illustrations lent more info to each page, but more background would have been good.

I'm going to be so honest here, I don't know how popular homesteading really is. Going into reading this book, I was under the impression that homesteading was very unpopular and a dying lifestyle. Apparently that's not the case! Since homesteading has been gaining popularity in recent years, I think that this is a great book that caters to the youth of homesteads. Additionally, this book gives lots of great examples of how kids can help out and explore around the farm and house, which is always a plus. As for the writing, I really liked how the author utilized the power of alliteration in order to really help the alphabet message across. Similar to other reviewers of this book, I thought that the X page was a bit of an outlier, but it was also something different, something I'd never seen done in an ABC book before. So, in short, I think that the X page can really go either way, if that makes sense. Overall, though, great book!

I thought the idea of homesteading was not to be buying too many mas-produced items, but this one will be welcome in any family living by the lifestyle. Each letter – well, X is a bit dodgy, it has to be said – gets a suitable "[blank] is for…" styled line, and a further line showing much clever alliteration, and the artwork has a very handmade feel to accompany the egg-collecting, the gardening, the quilting and the seed-sowing. We see a happy family, with the kids first and foremost enjoying taking part – which is where the final page comes in as we get a bonus list of tasks, pastimes, and requirements for children on such a homestead, that nicely ties in with the main contents. Four and a half stars – it certainly saves even the most creative homesteader making such a book themselves.

Families who farm, homestead, or homeschool will enjoy reading about all the things kids and parents can do to support themselves at home. Families who do not do these things will get a glimpse into a different way of life and the many things that can be learned and accomplished from it. This book is an excellent resource to springboard into many topics and hands on activities. Beautifully illustrated pictures show landscapes, animals, and multi-generational, traditional families working together. This one is a must buy!

M Is For Mason Jar, written by Carolyn Bennett Fraiser and illustrated by Sally Garland, is an alphabet of homesteading, perfect for young children.

A big thank you to the author, Carolyn Bennett Fraiser, the illustrator, Sally Garland, Familius, and NetGalley for the opportunity to check out M is for Mason Jar, a Homesteading Alphabet book. I will happily share my review to Amazon, Goodreads, and Barnes & Noble upon release. The first thing I noticed were the lighter pastel tones and the edges of the illustrations that fade out, which give the whole book a really soft, calming feel, a great homage to the calming and satisfying nature of the activities of homesteading. Taking care of yourself and your family is a rewarding activity, and children really look forward to helping with chores that give them a sense of accomplishment. Seeing the children in the book participating in these activities could give children who live on a farm or whose parents homestead a warm feeling of identity and belonging in the connections. The alphabet aspect gives plenty of opportunity to provide for a variety of activities that are involved in such a lifestyle, and the illustrations show all these activities in a really fun and engaging way, as well as learning the alphabet and practicing those sounds. The pictured homes look warm and cozy, and the family seems like they are all having a really great time together, taking care of each other. At the end, there's even a long list of activities that children can participate in on a homesteading farm. These activities, of course, must be age and ability appropriate, but all are great ideas of things to explore and adventures to have with little ones in your life.

Even children who are not growing up on a farm or homestead will enjoy the depictions of the activities, and will benefit from knowing how things are made or grown. The last page is especially cute, with the family all coming together to look at the stars outside under the safety of a tree in their yard and with blankets wrapped around them. A campfire blazes away next to the family to keep them warm while they share a sweet moment. The possibilities for fun and adventure are endless on a farm, and this book is a great way to share that fun with children in your life. I would recommend this book to any baby or toddler, whether they live on a farm or not. But this would make an amazing gift for a child in your life that does live on a homesteading farm. Thanks again for the chance to read!

With a title such as M is for Mason Jars, one might expect an interesting history of how mason jars came to be and what they have been and are used for. However, this is really a book about the English Language's alphabet from A-Z. It is not a toddler's book per se, but for young readers to learn about homesteading life in general. A history book of sorts.

I really liked this aspect of this educational book. I feel that, combined with the cute and colorful illustrations, children will find it interesting, entertaining and informative of life from years gone by. It certainly portrays a self-sustaining lifestyle that has potential to refreshingly appeal to today's children.

Farm Steading and cottagecore seem to be soaring in popularity and have been thriving for quite some time. People clasp onto the integrity and high values passed down to them by family members who loved with a protective instinct unrivaled by any other. Carolyn Bennet Frasier has picked up on the cue and created a charming children's picture book that not only encapsulates what this population is looking to hand down and instill in their own children but teaches valuable lessons as well. Each page teaches young emerging readers a new letter of the alphabet-- a core building block for parents who want their children to either have a more enriched and fulfilling academic experience or who choose to homeschool.

Families will undoubtedly adore the whimsical children in this delightful children's picture book as they read through every word and admire the illustrations on every page. The section with helpful author tips and encouragement is an additional bonus which will make this book popular with children and their families.

M is for Mason Jar is an alphabet book centered on life on a homestead. Each letter gets a sentence full of alliteration (X was a bit of a stretch, with it being an X for road crossing, but every other letter was great!)(Many alphabet books have just one or two examples per letter, so I really appreciate this one). The illustrations are simple yet colorful and full of diverse characters. The book ends with 26 ways kids can be involved on a homestead.
I was pleasantly surprised at how secular this book is, considering how much of the homesteading movement is coopted by alt-right christianity.
