Adecca is twelve when people of her village make a funeral for her. From now on she is Speaker for the deceased. Since nothing in this life is fair her only friend is going to be put to sleep to wake up in the world that need him. And he takes her with him. They wake up in the completely different world thousand years away from their own. And the world need them.

The idea of the plot itself is interesting, but I was disappointed with the writing. It was so flavourless that it felt raw. Like the first draft needed to be spiced up. Also, the abrupt endings of the chapter were a bit awkward.
The story lacked word building, and the characters seemed inconsistent and liquid. I got the feeling they could be anything the author needed in a particular scene.

I got this as an arc on Netgalley and it has since come out. This story was dark, intense and absolutely beautiful. The author wanted a steampunk story and it delivered on it. But it's just also a good story on the harm of misogyny and the pressures of society on girls and women.

Four stars.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book. I found this YA novel to be engaging, coated with lovely prose, and a dose of steampunk. Much of the book's opening pages reminded me of Dia De Los Muertos festivals. I found it a bit difficult to relate or feel a link to Adecca, the main character, but I did enjoy the plot as it wove several fairy tale themes together.
