I adored The Paris Wife so I jumped at the chance to read Paula McLain's Circling the Sun. I was not disappointed one bit!

Beryl Markham is a strong woman and, much like Hadley Hemingway, is a difficult woman for an author to take on and portray well. Nevertheless, McLain brings Markham to life in wondrous ways. The novel is a work of fiction but the research that McLain has put into story is readily apparent.

McLain writes Circling the Sun from a very personal place. Both Markham and McLain were abandoned by their mothers at a very young age and both are avid horsewomen. This connection brings honesty and authenticity to McLain's portrayal of Markham. She can be trusted to tell this story and tell it well.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was a journey of discovery and understanding. Beryl Markham was an extremely strong woman but faltered at times. She is approachable in this novel. McLain has told Markham's story truthfully and honestly and beautifully. A must read for any lover of historical fiction and strong women.
