If you’re a regular commuter and/or someone who loves to people-watch while travelling, then Hiro Arikawa’s The Passengers on the Hankyu Line is for you. Even though I've ridden trains in Japan, I don't think I've ever used the Hankyu Railway Line. It was fascinating to learn about the route and stops along the Hankyu Line, as well as to gain a better understanding of the surrounding area. Like the countless “healing fiction” books I’ve read before, The Passengers on the Hankyu Line consists of a series of intertwining vignettes, this time revolving around a cast of 11 different people who are users of the same train line. Reading a book with characters that are both relatable and likeable was truly refreshing, as they are individuals you'd love to get to know better. And fortunately, there is a bit of a time skip in the book, so we get to revisit many of them six months later and see how things have changed for them. Im loved seeing how brief, unexpected encounters with strangers can lead to growth or new developments in the lives of people. A thoughtful and charming novel, The Passengers on the Hankyu Line would make a wonderful palate cleanser for readers seeking to unwind and renew their faith in human connections. Furthermore, it is also a good introduction for anyone who wishes to get acquainted with Japanese culture and daily life.

I would honestly read anything by this author! All previous books were a hit and this was just as good. It's just a cozy, feel good read that I needed. The stories are intertwined through chance encounters, and the characters are themselves are interesting. You get to read about the characters, but later in the book, you do get to meet them again and see what happened after we read about then.
This is a great read if you are just looking for something light, but still meaningful

I requested this for consideration for Book Riot's All the Books podcast for its release date. After sampling several books out this week, I decided to go with a different book for my review.

This was so cozy and sweet. I love this author and this novel was no different. I learned a lot about Japan, too! I went through so many emotions.. happy, warm, even a bit sad.. while reading The Passengers on the Hankyu Line and will definitely be buying a copy in June! Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC! 💓

It’s rare to find a book that’s both feel-good and emotionally layered. This one nailed it.
Comforting yet thought-provoking, it strikes a beautiful balance. I’ll be recommending this for years.
