Well this was a fun read!
It was a little cheesy at times and read like a webtoon but ! I enjoyed the ride. It just felt disconnected if that makes sense. Like the flow was interrupted here and there. But I think it was super fun.
Would you agree to marry the grim reaper?

Sometimes, a deal with the grim reaper is better than no deal at all. Death of a Pop Star is a comedic young adult graphic novel about a pop star, Sophie, who is at the top of her game and falls to her death, only getting a second chance because the grim reaper is a huge fan. The deal: Sophie gets to live her life again, but once she dies, there are no more chances. And Eli had to add his own bonus, Sophie agrees to become his fiancée when that time comes, so that they can be the power couple of limbo.
This was such a fun read because of the young nature of the characters. We all have those awkward moments when we are young adults, and this book encapsulates all those feelings, especially with Sophie tackling the journey of attending college. Because Eli had a hand in changing her destiny, it seems like Sophie is constantly dealing with life-or-death mishaps. Violet Karim's writing style matches the visuals perfectly. Excited for what's to come.

I am typically not much of a Wattpad/manga reader, but I wanted to be more knowledgeable about the genre. This story did pleasantly surprise me. It was funny, cute, and very aware of what it was. The book doesn't take itself too seriously. It is cheesy, but it knows it's cheesy. My big critique was the abrupt nature of the ending. I understand the source material is a webtoon, but the ending could have been better adapted for a book format.

So I discovered ‘Death of a Pop Star’ because Diablo Cody is producing a film adaption and has been on my radar since. So as soon as I remembered I have the ability to request ARCs (which I often forget I can do lol) I signed up for this. And let’s say this didn’t disappoint. It’s a wild ride following an upcoming Idol who is gifted a second chance at life and now has to survive college, someone trying to take her out and the lies from the people closest to her.

As soon as I finished this I went to the webtoon app and subscribed!! What a fun read so far!
Sophie Lim is a recently debuted idol who unfortunately has just died. Lucky for her, the grim reaper gives her a second chance at life with a few conditions. After waking up from a coma Sophia’s manager and aunt convinces her to take some time off and actually go to college and live a normal life, but no matter Sophie keeps nearly dying! Is it just by chance or by design?

Death of a Pop Star is a lighthearted read with colors that POP on the page.
Sophie Lim is just an ordinary girl, think Miley in Hannah Montana, except she died and struck a deal with the Grim Reaper. With her newly acquired second chance at life, Sophie is making the best of it after aunt, who is also her talent manager, benches the rising pop star for much needed rest and recovery. But even with the break, Sophie finds herself in life peril situations and now Eli, the aforementioned Grim Reaper moonlighting as the school janitor, and Julien, the prince of the Underworld have decided to protect Sophie from death; each has their own self-serving reasons as to why.
I really enjoyed this one! It's fun, quirky, and very cute. It's easy to read in an afternoon, which I always love. The colors and lines are also really engaging.
The story ends on a cliffhanger of sorts with there being a more nefarious reason as to why Sophie is having so many near death experiences 😳 I'm interested to know what happens next with Sophie and her friends!

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Webtoon UnScrolled for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
💭 My Thoughts
This book was a great mix of cute, hilarious, and sometimes even bizarre. Having the grim reaper be a huge fan of you has its perks. However, that only goes so far when legitimately everything is out to kill you. The art style does a great job accompanying the fun vibes of the story. The FMC is very loveable. While the potential villain is predictable, the motives behind their actions still remain a mystery. I can’t wait to see where this goes!

There were quite a few things I liked about this story. The relationship between Sophie, a sheltered pop star on the rise, and Eli, the grim reaper, is quite humorous and quirky. The mystery behind Sophie's "accidental" death and miraculous recovery brings an interesting darker element to this otherwise lighthearted tale.
The only issues I had with this graphic novel was the visual quality of the artwork. The images appeared fuzzy and somewhat blurry. It almost looked like the images were uploaded using a lower tier jpeg that got highly compressed when published online. If there was a way to make the art appear more clear, I would definitely rate this read higher.

Thank you NetGalley and WWBG - Wattpad Webtoon Book Group for allowing me to read this cute graphic novel. It making me want to know who push her. Through the read omg it is a damn cute and love it. Can’t wait for volume 2 book to know who really did it. I starting to have a suspect on my mind but will wait and see if I right or wrong. So I giving this book a 4.5 stars.

This was a fast and lighthearted read, perfect for when you’re in the mood for something that’s not overly serious. The art style was nice and I liked the characters, even though Sophie was a bit too clumsy.

This is a really fun graphic novel! Sophie is such a fun character, even with being a bit TOO clumsy and a bit TOO quirky for my taste for a main girl character, she's still relatable in her awkward charm. Definitely a series to keep an eye on.

I loved Elliah and the other grim reaper; it gives off fun rom-com vibes and is such a binge-worthy read. The character of pop star Sophie is adorable as she learns about herself while attending the classes, especially how her aunts lie to her about the dance classes. I can't wait to read the second one!

thx to netgalley + the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review
⋆. 𐙚 ˚ i was not expecting to enjoy this as much as i did and let's be real, every second of it was goofy and cringy and so so ridiculous but also so cute? like imagine a grim reaper was your biggest fan. i mean, i wouldnt complain, he's also a goofball and hot to add as a bonus. so yes, this was a slay graphic novel and i will be buying the physical version. ⋆. 𐙚

nothing about this holds my attention, neither the art nor the tone or story. it's just one of those that doesn't fit my tastes I guess.
thank you to the publisher for the arc

Volume one contains episodes 1-22 of the Webtoon Death of a Pop Star.
Sophie Lim is a World wide idol sensation. She can sing, she can dance, and shes loved dearly by her fans. Sophie is breaking into doing commercials as apart of her idol work. The commercial shoot comes to an end , this also the end of Sophie Lim's life......Almost.
After Sophie takes a spill at the top of the stairs and dies, she meets her number one fan. The grim reaper. Sophie isn't ready yet to leave this world as she doesn't want to leave her aunt ( also her manager ) all on her own after being there for her since she was young. Lucky for her , she was able to strike a deal.
After the world thinks Sophie is pretty much done for after being in a coma, she awakes and this is where our real story begins. As her waking has taken the world and those close to her by surprise, the biggest changes are yet to come. Where Sophie has tackled the Pop Star world , she now is tackling going to school and trying to fit in. The universe does not make this easy on her.
The ending leaves you with a shocking truth, that makes you wonder if everything is truly an accident or is there something else going on that Sophie has yet to discover.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story , and I'm already looking forward to volume two. The characters are fun and you can see the personalities of all of them and how they connect with each other. I love the whole story line going on with Eli and cant wait till Sophie fully remembers who he is. I do wish we got more of the story of Sophie and her long time bestie who is making her debut. I can see that they have a connection but I wish we got a bit more background with the two of them. We also dont really know to much about Sophies Aunt or her family history in general, I am going to assume we will get more of that in the next volumes.
I also think it would be cool if we got more of Elis story, was he always a reaper? How is he being a reaper and a janitor, are there alot of grim reapers? I think going down the lore of him and the whole reaper story line would bring alot of the story together as well, I'm hoping his backstory doesn't just fall to the side until the end.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I read the first 25-ish chapters of this webtoon when it originally went up. I've not read on Webtoon for a long while, so I have no idea what point it's at now, but it was so nice to read it again. The art is silly goofy while still being appealing to look at. I enjoy the characters being set up as well as the bits of plot sprinkled in. Julian has a theory that I have a feeling is correct, and I want to see it unravel and come together.
A really good webtoon that I look forward to seeing where goes :D
(also, sorry, Eli, but I find Julian more attractive... Definitely not making me bias toward future ships maybe... 🤣)

This webtoon is on the silly side of things. Sophie Lim faces blunder after blunder, but are they accidents or something more sinister? I have my theories. This graphic novel was super cute and easy to read. I love that the Grim Reaper is a pop star stan. I’m excited to see where this series goes. Especially after that ending!

my opinion:
first thing i noticed as soon as i opened the e-ARC, the illustrations are so cool looking, the characters are also very expressive; which helps me understand the story and emotion better, and it's all so colourful.
personally, i think the plot of the story is rather simple with predictable plot points but since the execution is good, i'm interested to read on the continuation in the next volumes of the story.
thanks to netgalley and the author and the publisher for giving me a chance to read and review this e-ARC.
my rating: 3.5

First, thank you to NetGalley and Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This graphic novel is a quick and light read. The plot is pretty unique. I was very interested in receiving this ARC but I didn't end up enjoying it much. I felt that the main character was a little boring for me. She is meant to be a pop star but she is just an anxious young adult like all of us. That's a good thing because it means she's relatable but honestly I just didn't see anything new or intriguing to her character that would make me care about what happens.
The MMC (at least I think he is), is the grim reaper. He's a fan boy of her music and it's honestly a cute character to have BUT... i felt like he was lacking in any 'grim reaper' aspects. At the beginning, when he's first introduced to our pop star FMC he goes on about not upsetting the balance of the world and life and death and whatnot and seems to take his job pretty seriously. Only to then abandon all his duties to follow her around and act like a normal adult. It's contradicting and strange to me.
The art style didn't appeal to me out of personal preference.
I won't be continuing with this series but I do think it might lead to a great story. Unfortunately, the first volume just didn't hook me.
I would still recommend others to check it out if they're interested in the plot because it is unique and interesting to see.
Again, thank you for the ARC ♡

Sophie Lim is a newly debuted idol, who after a stumble down the stairs, makes a deal with the grim reaper. I really enjoyed the premise, and Sophie is such a fun and energetic protagonist. The humor and pacing really reminds of other similar webtoons, like the Cursed Princess Club and True Beauty, and it really works for me. The illustration style is so quirky and fun, and really reminiscent of other popular graphic novels and manga right now. K-pop is also so big right now, and a series about an idol for young adults was sorely missing. I'm really excited for Sophie's story to continue (I may even have to jump over to Webtoon!), as we're left with a pretty big cliffhanger!
Perfect for younger teens looking to get into manga!
