Tom Butero’s I Don’t Want to Die is a powerful, clinically grounded exploration of suicide prevention—rooted in nearly five decades of direct experience in behavioral health. Aimed at both mental health professionals and concerned loved ones, the book offers clear, compassionate guidance on recognizing suicidal ideation and intervening effectively. It presents user-friendly assessment tools, structured clinical contracts, and case studies based on real-world scenarios. The narrative navigates the complex ethical landscape surrounding suicide with sensitivity and depth. While portions of the book emphasize technical detail, its accessible tone ensures it remains both practical and empathetic.
This is an indispensable resource for clinicians, caregivers, and anyone seeking to better understand suicide risk and foster hope and healing in the lives of vulnerable individuals.

I really struggled to read this book - it was incredibly dense and laborious.
I enjoyed reading about Butero's own story, but it was very heavy on the science and it lost me a little bit.

I started this book last month for Mental Health May but it was quite heavy material and not what I had fully expected, so I gave it a break and myself a breather and came back to it this month.
I did think it would be more diary, case based scenarios, but it was more a training guide for individuals that work or find themselves in the care of someone with suicide ideation, mental health struggles, PTSD etc. which of course is an incredibly useful and resourceful tool but not exactly what I was expecting.
Tom Butero has decades of clinical experience and research behind him, working on the frontline, with vulnerable patients/clients and their friends or family and has built up this toolbox of contracts, talk therapy, medication and case studies. Of course not all cases are the same or linear, but this was a great foundation for the layperson.
Thank you so much NetGalley, Tom Butero and Koehler Books for this early release copy. It’s out next week 24th June

Stayed up late to Read this in a night, I really enjoyed this book. I would read more books by this author

"I Don’t Want to Die" dives deep into the tough conversations around mental health and the importance of valuing life. It’s a raw and relatable read that reminds us we’re not alone in our struggles.
As a training supervisor at a distress center, I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to have books like this on hand.
