Before I launch into my review, I would like to say a huge thank you to Courtney Psak, Hodder & Stoughton, and Netgalley for the Advanced Digital Reader Copy of this title. For anyone with their eye on this novel, here is my personal review of the book to help you decide whether you are interested or not. All opinions offered are my own.

If I were to market the book lyrically, this is the song that sums up the plot and the mood: LINK COMING SOON

Shortly after settling into her married life with Grant, Rose and her son, James’s, lives are uprooted when the family decide to move to Florida to care for Grant’s mother, Evelyn, in her mansion. Evelyn’s thoughts about the happy couple are clear to the reader from the start, but her actions tell a different story. To complicate matters, Isabel is hired as a tutor to make life easier for James and aid his transition to his new school. But Isabel seems to want to be more than just a tutor? Why has she manipulated her way into this household? And what secrets is she holding?

The story starts with Isabel in stealth mode, searching in places she should not be. She appears unhinged as she stalks the Caldwells along the East Coast. From the onset, the story is cloaked in deceit and suspense. Chapter 2 sees the novel cuts to Rose to pick up the story, where we travel with her to Palm Beach and learn of the family dynamics. Again, suspense continues to build, particularly when Evelyn picks up the baton and gives the reader cause for concern about the way she is trying to wreck her son, Grant’s marriage to Rose. The saying keeping your friends close, and your enemies closer appears to be a philosophy she lives by.

Whilst Rose and Evelyn’s lives as daughter- and mother-in-las are entwined, it was interesting to watch their dynamics. Neither seem to know each other well but appear to have fairly firm opinions about each other. Watching these feelings being unpacked and the reasoning behind them is one of the key drivers of the story. The biggest question mark, however, is around Isabel and why it is so important for her to teach at James’s school, whilst tutoring him after hours. I enjoyed reading how she instrumented her outcomes. That said, I was not blown away by the conclusion.

Psak, gently builds the novel, weaving several stories like a plait that tightly winds together once fully formed. It keeps a steady pace throughout the whole novel. Although it was a page-turner, I did not find myself wanting to speed up or slow down at any point. I was happy to coast with reading and taking in the family drama that unfolded. This was potentially due to the small cast of characters making it easy to get to know each one well. They were even likeable, regardless of what side of the good or evil divide they were on.

Whilst the story was a pure mystery at the beginning, by the time the reader reaches the mid-point, there are a number of clues befitting of an amateur detective. I found myself piecing the pieces together at a rapid rate. I loved the story, but…and it is a big but, it was not the thriller for which I was hoping. Instead of the big ‘aha’ moment, a bit like a heavily shaken bottle of champagne being opened and generating a fountain, it was more like a gentle pop and a wisp of gas.

I liked the characters. I liked how they all fit together. I enjoyed the end. I enjoyed the journey to get to the end of the novel. Yet, there is something missing that I just cannot put my finger on. I suppose I would have liked more fanfare. Although the story includes deaths that occur outside the duration of the book, and although there are some high stakes situation, there is minimal bloodshed, and not enough time to summon a panic. The climax is short-lived.

Would I recommend the book? Yes. Despite the lack of deep-rooted excitement, the characterizations are written well. I can quite believe that the characters could exist with all their traits in the real world. The scenarios are believable in a fictional world, and plotted against the history, the timeline of events is well-spaced, and the writing is easy to follow. Is it the book of the year? Definitely not, but Psak has the potential to claim that accolade in the future. Thrill-seekers might be a little disappointed with the balance of mundane versus action in the grand scheme of things if they are comparing the book to others that share a category but this is a book that would easily keep me entertained on a commute to work, on a cold evening curled up in a love seat, or besides the pool on a much deserved holiday. It will not give you heart palpitations, or demand excess attention, making it a little of a lazy read if you cannot or will not afford the book your full attention. If star ratings allowed, I would probably give the book 3.5 out of 5 stars, but as I cannot I am rounding up to 4 out of 5 stars.

Be cautious about who you invite into your home - that is the lesson The Tutor will teach you! Rose and her family must move to wealthy Palm Beach, FL, when her mother-in-law becomes ill. Rose quickly discovers some mysterious things about her in-laws and soon finds herself caught in a dangerous game.

Courtney Psak writes an engaging thriller. Each character has secrets, some potentially sinister. Filled with misdirections and twists, readers will stay on the edge of their seats until the very end!

Advanced reader copy provided by Hodder & Stoughton. All opinions are my own.

This was a slow start for me but really picked up towards the end! I tried to guess the twist (wrong) guessed again (wrong again) and the twists kept coming so that was a lot of fun.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-ARC. All opinions are my own.

A great story told from multiple POV's. Must admit that I did fine it a bit confusing but I kept a pen and paper nearby to make notes. Lots of twists made it a good read, and the final twist was unexpected.

This was a good read about Rose and her son James who are moving with her new husband to live in a mansion in Florida with his mother who is very sick. Although Rose has only been married a short time to Grant after her first husband died she feels she finally has a man in her life who loves her and with look after her and James only problem is his mother hates her and wants her out of Greg’s life no matter what it costs. As secrets and lies swirl around the old halls of the mansion Rose starts to worry that maybe a few secrets of her own may spill out and what is it that her mother in law is hiding. A great page turned. I can see this as a channel 5 drama in the future.

The Tutor by Courtney Psak is a thrilling psychological thriller that takes advantage of a mother's worst nightmares. The plot revolves around Rose, a mother and wife who, having moved into a Florida estate, employs a tutor named Isabel for her son James. Isabel is perfect in every way initially—she's young, bright, and produces results with James. But an insidious feeling of horror creeps in as Rose sees Isabel pushing boundaries too far, crossing professional and personal lines.

The author skillfully weaves a suspenseful and paranoid-filled tale. Tension builds with each page as Rose's instincts conflict with the innocent-looking appearance of her new tutor. The reader becomes drawn into Rose's frantic quest for uncovering Isabel's real motives, questioning her every move and motivation. The power of the book is in its unrelenting pace and in the disquieting feeling that one is witnessing something utterly amiss, culminating in a "heart-stopping twist" that will delight domestic suspense fans. This is an ideal read for anyone who likes a gripping tale with a lot at risk and a surprising ending.

Rose and her son James move in with her new husband's mother as she has just been told she has Parkinson's but things go wrong and her mother-in-law is determined to split them up or to get Rose to move out, and James's tutor is getting too friendly but why?
The twists are great and keeps you in suspense till the end.

I’m in my thriller era and The Tutor left me wanting to read more! The Tutor reads like a Lifetime channel movie; wealthy family, dirty secrets, lies, hidden motives, and murder. The story centers around the Caldwell family: Grant, his new wife Rose, her son James, and Grant's mother, Evelyn. After living in a New York apartment, the family relocates to Palm Beach to be closer to Evelyn, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. They settle into the Caldwell family mansion where hidden truths begin to surface. Especially after hiring a young, new teacher named Isabel to tutor James.

Initially, I thought that the story was boring and a little too slow to hold my interest but as the story progressed and more POVS were introduced, the harder it got to put down. The pacing turned out to be perfect and helped contribute to the somber mood of the story. Each new detail had me clutching my imaginary pearls and wanting to read til the end which left me feeling gagged 😱by the way. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Thank you to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the arc!

Wow! This book was brilliant. What I loved so much about it this was the ending. I couldn't put it down. This is Courtneys debut, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

If you think you can work a thriller out from the start, then try this one. So many characters, all with a lot going on. But watch out for the twists, they will get you! It will have you hooked from the first few pages.

Full of extravagant wealth, deadly secrets, and deceitful motives—The Tutor is a pacy suspense that hits you with one shocking twist after another. Psak immediately draws you in with a vibrant cast of suspicious characters and engaging locations. I was hooked from the very start and stayed up late into the night reading! Psak deftly balances multiple points of view in a way that keeps you turning the page and second-guessing everything you think you’ve read! If you love dark family histories, luxurious settings, and a messy search for truth, then this is the book for you! Perfect for fans of Catherine Cooper and Stephanie DeCarolis.

Did I guess what happened… of course I did… until the twist, then a lot of what I thought I knew was in fact wrong 😂 great twist too!

I really enjoyed this one. Courtney’s writing style flowed well and made it easy to read and want to keep on reading.

Multi POV’s for those of us who enjoy those. It certainly helped to build the story.

Certainly had a few questions and theories going on at the start and I like that. Means the book was capturing my attention and making me think! There’s a few secrets about each character and you get little teasers about things that get you guessing.

You will change your opinion on certain characters in this book and it’s understandable why.

I enjoyed the friendship between Isabel and James and thought all of the characters were written to a standard where you enjoyed reading about them and they played their role well in the story.

Great book from Courtney and I look forward to reading more.

Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review
