This book details the long history of racist hoaxes in the United States, and the extent to which white people have over the years used misinformation or outright lies to spread these hoaxes in order to (1) prop up the myth of white supremacy and (2) make money. Each chapter focuses on different racist hoaxes in our history and which have all faded from memory and yet have made a lasting impact on our culture and the continued systemic racism we have in the United States. For example, the word "miscegenation" itself came from one of these hoaxes. The history is fascinating, if depressing. I think the author lost the thread a little bit when reaching the modern era and connecting the current atmosphere of fake news and "crisis of truth" to these past hoaxes although generally speaking social media has allowed old racist lies and misinformation to spread much easier and faster. AI-generated hoaxes are becoming the new thing. I wish there was a little bit more depth to the last chapter focusing on the present era to really tie the thread between the present lies and the past ones.
