Values by Mark Carney presents an ambitious and timely exploration of how society must shift from market-driven values to human-centered values. Carney draws on his experiences as a central banker to argue that economic systems need to be reimagined around sustainability, fairness, and resilience. His insights into climate change, financial reform, and social trust are especially relevant in a post-pandemic world.

That said, the audiobook edition can be a tough listen. Carney narrates the book himself, and while it's always interesting to hear an author read their own work, the tone is fairly monotone and the material is dense. Long passages of economic theory and policy analysis sometimes feel more suited to a printed format where readers can pause, reread, and digest. For listeners unfamiliar with economic jargon, parts of the book may be difficult to follow.

Overall, Values is worth checking out for those interested in ethics and economics—but the audiobook may require extra focus and patience to get through.

Thank you to Mark Carney, Penguin Random House Canada Audiobooks, and NetGalley for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
