A fun, mostly fast paced read featuring Zavier, a Nephilim (half human/half angel) warrior, and the woman he has fallen for, Liss. Their mission is to save the world from the Apocalypse by finding Atlantis and freeing the Angels that were trapped when it disappeared. Each has a greatest fear: that she will be the target of his darkness while hers is being left alone. Fighting together just shows how opposites really do attract. His grumpy attitude is balanced by her more sassy and sparkling one. Despite all of the danger they face, they still have time for the snappy banter - a "Shakespeare quote for every occasion."
3.5 stars rounded up

Sadly another DNF for me. This was so juvenile. The writing, the dialogue and the characters all felt very YA. I have nothing against YA, it’s actually of my favorite genres, however I want those vibes from a YA book. I don’t want full blown adults, or 87 year old nephilim, acting like they’re in high school.
This is also the third book in a series. It’s marketed as interconnected standalones but I feel like it would be best to read the previous books to fully understand what’s happening.

Not always an angel is a fun fast read about finding love with someone you didn't expect to love. It's a fun read that I just could not put down.

Liss, former music teacher and just a “normal” woman, has two friends with special abilities. They each have half-angel half-human boyfriends with a big job on their shoulders: save the world from the apocalypse. The previous books are for the other two couples and the continuing story of who is killing the angels. Liss and Zavier have an incredible mission. She realizes her own gifts and love of research to create a plan. They are very much an opposites attract couple with grumpy guy and sweet girl, both having damaged childhoods they bond quickly. All the couples working together form an unbreakable team, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses makes them quite powerful. Sexy banter and clever quips make their story easy to read. I received an advanced copy and wrote this review voluntarily.

ARC REVIEW:
this book is a 3.5 rounded up for me.
I was pretty confused to begin this book because I didn't know there were others before this. I would suggest reading those before this one. There is an ongoing plot that would help in understanding what is happening during this book.
Liss is just an average human living in a supernatural world. She just goes about her day as if nothing is different, that is until demons decide to change that. However, things start to change when powerless Liss isn't as powerless as she thought.
Zavier is your perfect grumpy, brooding Nephilim warrior that you can't help but fall for.
The banter between the FMC and MMC in this book is so good and kept me wanting more from them.
What happens when you start to fall for "bodyguard"?? And what happens when he starts to fall for you??
Thank you to entangled publishing and Christi Barth for this allowing me the opportunity to ARC read this book in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars. I thought it was cool I didn’t need to read the first 2 books in this series to get what’s going on. I really liked the fmc she was sassy and brought out the best in the grumpy mmc. Started off like it would be a great slow burn but the mmc had a drastic personality switch and ruined their dynamic for me. I enjoyed the lore about nephilim and titans but felt like the author tried to combine too many types of legends and mythology. I almost dnf but my brain wouldn’t let me I’m still a work in progress lol.

Upon starting this book, I discovered that it was the third installment in the series. Despite the author's assertion that each book can be read as a standalone, I felt that my understanding of the world settings was somewhat impaired due to not having read the preceding novels.
Nevertheless, I found this book to be charming. Its tone and style reminded me of the TV show Lucifer, which I greatly admire. The dialogue in this book is witty and engaging, with a quick-paced narrative.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGallery for allowing me to review a pre-release copy.

I'll start with the fact that I haven't read the rest of the series. The book can be read on its own. That said, this book follows a third pair, Liss and Zavier, who seem to be the only unmated pair of their friends. If you want the backstory, I'd highly recommend reading the preceding books.
What I liked:
✅ Sassy FMC
✅ Broody MMC
✅ Romantasy
✅ Action
What I disliked:
❌ It didn't pull me in from the beginning. Maybe it was just me?
❌ Again, maybe just me, but the point of view didn't seem consistent all the time. It felt like this was third person most of the time, yet there were times where first person thoughts were input. Maybe I'm overthinking it and just didn't like how it intermixed.
❌ Some people have mentioned that this reads like a YA novel, which I completely understand. At times, the dialogue and relationships felt juvenile or just odd. "Then he scooped my breast back into appropriate coverage." Personally, I was looking for more substance to the relationships and book as a whole at times.
Overall:
I rated this book at 3 stars. I liked it but didn't love it. That said, some people may really enjoy it, especially if they've read the other books in the series and are aching to see how Liss and Zavier end up.

When a demon crashes a party, Liss learns the angels, half-angels, demons, and other paranormal are real. Liss is the only human among her friends. Zavier Carranza is a Nephilim, a half angel half human, warrior. He’s grouchy and has a chip on his shoulder. He and his two buddies are trying to stop the Apocalypse. They are trying to stop the Titans from escaping Tartarus and taking over Heaven and Hell. Zavier protects Liss because of him, there is a bounty on her head. The grouchiness doesn’t deter Liss and she falls for him. With the Apocalypse near, Heaven and Hell about to be overthrown, and Zavier breaks some rules to save Liss. Now they all are trying to find Atlantis and release the Angels that were trapped when it disappeared. Can they save the world so the humans don’t even know what is going on?
Good story. It confused me a little. Opposites attract. Steamy. Action. Zavier was held hostage for three months and it’s left him with trust issues. Liss was left by her parents to pursue their singing career.

Thank you, Entangled Publishing, for the ARC!
I didn’t realize this was the 3rd in a series until after I started. Although it’s supposed to be an interconnected standalone, I definitely felt like there were times when I was missing out on things by not having read the first two books in the series.
Other than that, I think this book was cute for the most part, but maybe just not for me personally.

If you are a fan of the TV show Lucifer, this one will be right up your alley! Unfortunantly I wasn't aware this was Book 3 of a series, but it seemed like it was an interconnected stand alone, I would have loved to read the first 2 first as it was slightly confusing at the start.
This was a really fun read, the banter was hilarious and it was a fast paced read! Something is always happening in the book, and there was not a moment that I felt bored, and I look forward to reading the first two 😊

I didn’t know there were books before this, so I’d recommend reading those first so you have a better understanding of the world already set. It follows our friend-group-turned-family consisting of Nephilim warriors, and our “ordinary powerless” fmc Liss, who find themselves suddenly on a mission to stop an apocalypse from happening with demons attacking and trying to taking over.
I don’t normally reach for paranormal books but I was surprised by how silly/funny the banter was. I also very much enjoyed that it was fast paced. This book definitely delivered on the training to save the world superhero feel. Lots of messy drama, attitude and actions! Of course what kind of story would it be without our broody, grumpy mmc Zavier who’s main issue was that he believes his darkness was going to taint Liss, when all he constantly wants to do is protect her, which raises the tension between them tenfold.
I keep forgetting that this takes place in modern time. All the references to today’s culture had me doing a double take. But if you’re a fan of urban fantasy like things, you’d like the integration of the magical world and our regular daily lives. The characters were SO unserious at times, just a heads up if you’re hoping for a story with more in depth feelings and emotions and a solid ending.

I will share my review on Amazon once this is released too (04/21/25) with the link attached below!

Not Another Angel features Liss, a powerless human, who is surrounded by half-angels and friends with powers. Liss is easily the target in the group as she's the only human. Zavier, one of the Nephilim warriors, protects her because she's important to their friend group. The two also have a natural chemistry. Zavier has to learn how to open up, get over past trauma, and allow love into his life, all while preparing to fight a specific enemy.
I do think that Liss' friends were honestly a bit of jerks before she was given powers, so I didn't find that Liss' apologies were necessary. Despite being powerless, she still had a generally great attitude toward her friends and just wanted to help.
While this book was a standalone, I wish I would have read the others first to help provide context to the relationships and character development. You dive right into the action in this one and the friendships with the angels are already existing. I felt like the relationships weren't fully believable since I didn't have that background.
Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my free and unbiased opinion.

Okay, so it’s my understanding that this is book three in the series. That being said, you don’t need to read the first two to understand this one. They seem to be standalone (maybe interconnected?) so you can totally just read this one without the others.
This book felt like if Stone Cold Touch by JLA was written for adults in the modern world.
I very quickly was sucked into this one. It’s fun, cute, and just a little chaotic.
The tension in this one is peak.
Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and in no way are influenced by the manner in which I received it.

I love that this book is a standalone, I wasn't confused reading it since I didn't read the others, everything important was there, however you'll love thos one so much you'll want to go and read the others right after!

firstly i just want to mention that i grew up reading and watching shadowhunters and that is one of my all time favorite series, so i was really excited that i was accepted and allowed to read this. in a way it really brought me back to a series that made me fall in love with reading and i will forever be thankful for that. this book brought me just as much joy and left me wanting more in the best way.
there is so much tension, banter and chemistry between the two main characters, liss and zavier. i really feel connected to liss's character with her being the third wheel friend (single life things😂). but i feel like that is how zavier feels at times too. zavier is definitely a broody nephilim and i love it. i mean the grumpier the better right?
i will say that this series is marketed as being an interconnected standalone but i since it was my first book in the series, i felt a little lost in the beginning. i feel like i needed to have read books 1 and 2 to understand a few things. other than that i really enjoyed this book a lot. i will hands down be going back to read the first two after how much i loved this book.

I love romance novels like these, Liss and Zavier are hilarious, the banter and the tension???? FIREEEEEEEEEEEE, literally, lol. But this book is not read as a standalone, I felt left out, but other than that it was an awesome read, now I have to go back and read the others, because these characters are too funny.

If you're in the mood for a paranormal romance with plenty of sparks and edge, *Not Always an Angel* by Christi Barth is your next read. The story centers on Liss Jemison, a completely normal human who’s suddenly thrown into a world of half-angels, Nephilim, and looming apocalyptic chaos. Six months ago, Liss’s life was ordinary, but after her friends fell for Nephilim, everything turned upside down. Now, she’s the easy target of the group, but Zavier, the fierce Nephilim warrior, has made it his mission to protect her—not just because she’s important to his friends, but also because he can’t seem to stop wanting to kiss her. As the apocalypse edges closer and Zavier’s past catches up with them, Liss is right in the thick of it all.
This book was such a delightful ride! Even though I haven't read the first two books in the series (but I’m definitely grabbing them now), I never felt lost or confused. Barth does a fantastic job of making this one accessible for newcomers, so no worries if you're jumping in mid-series. The locations they travel to are so vibrant and fun, especially their time in London—it had such a cute, romantic vibe. The pacing of the story kept me hooked from start to finish, never dragging.
But let’s talk about the real gems of the book—Zavier and Liss. The banter between them is top-notch, and the tension is palpable! Zavier’s grumpy, brooding energy paired with his surprisingly tender care for Liss made my heart melt. Liss’s journey to find her place within this otherworldly group felt so real, and her internal struggle really added depth to her character. Their romance? *Swoon*. It's the perfect mix of slow burn and explosive chemistry. If you love a good paranormal romance with a dash of danger, humor, and undeniable chemistry, you’re going to fall for this one!

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest.

Not Another Angel follows Liss Jemison, a powerless human surrounded by half-angels. Six months ago, her life was normal, until her friends fell for Nephilim and turned her world upside down. Liss is an easy target in their group, but Zavier, the fiercest Nephilim warrior, protects her because she’s important to his friends … and also because he wants to kiss her. With the apocalypse looming and Zavier’s past coming back to bite him and Liss.
This was such a fun paranormal, angel romance! I haven’t read the first two books in the series (although I really want to now) but the author did a great job at ensuring it wasn’t confusing or felt like I was missing much. I loved the setting and different places they visited. Their trip to London was so cute. The plot is well paced and kept me engaged.
There’s great banter and tension in this one! I loved how grumpy and broody Zavier was and how much he cared about Liss. I also really enjoyed Liss’s struggles and trying to find her worth in the group. I thought they were both characterized really well, and their romance was so swoony!
Overall, this is a great paranormal romance if you like Nephilim stories!
