Still loving this series and the characters a lot! With 11 books and several short stories into the series, I think that's fairly impressive!
This one takes us back to Cedar Grove for a bit and dips a little bit into the nostalgia of previous characters and the events of the earlier books throughout, so it was a fun vibe in that respect. The new characters and ideas explored in this installment were great. It's refreshing to be this far into a detective crime series and still feel like there is more to talk about or dive into with the various characters' growth. Mystery-solving pacing was very okay, and that might be my one drawback with it. Personally, it did feel a little slower than I liked at times, but I still really liked the book overall, and the pacing had some good moments too.

🎧 Audiobook Review – A Dead Draw by Robert Dugoni
⭐ 4.5/5 stars
🎙 Narrated by: Emily Sutton-Smith
🕵️♀️ Book 11 in the Tracy Crosswhite series
Okay, listen. This one wasn’t your typical high-stakes police procedural—it was slower, more personal, and honestly? That worked. A Dead Draw dives deep into Tracy’s past, and the emotional tension hits harder than any twist.
We follow Tracy as she reopens two cold cases—only to find herself face-to-face with a suspect connected to the man who killed her sister. It’s heavy. It’s personal. And when things spiral, she heads back to her hometown for a break… except the danger follows. Cue the standoff in a literal ghost town. Not kidding.
Now let’s talk narration. Emily Sutton-Smith delivered. Her voice has that worn-down, seen-too-much detective edge but still holds so much warmth. She made every flashback feel intimate and raw—like I was right there in Tracy’s head. It elevated the entire story.
This one leans more into psychological suspense than mystery—it’s less about the case, more about Tracy confronting trauma that never really left. And if you’ve followed her journey from earlier books, this will hit hard.
🖤 Not the twistiest in the series, but probably the most vulnerable
🖤 Slower pacing, but a rewarding emotional payoff
🖤 Strong narration that made the heavy moments land
I’d say start earlier in the series if you’re new to Tracy Crosswhite, but longtime fans? This one gives her the depth she deserves. Definitely recommend the audiobook format.

the setup…
Detective Tracy Crosswhite is known for her professionalism, maintaining her cool under pressure and her championship shooting skills. It’s when she’s interviewing murder suspect Erik Schmidt that it all comes to a crashing head. See, Schmidt was a close friend in prison of the man who murdered her sister. When he viciously taunts her during the interview, Schmidt unleashes Tracy’s former nightmares, this time including this evil man. She fails her qualifying shooting exercise for the first time and when Schmidt is released on a technicality, Tracy takes her family back to Cedar Grove to work with her original trainer…and prepare for the danger to come.
the heart of the story…
Unpopular opinion here…I loved the focus on the training! Despite what I thought that might be, it was less the technical aspects and more the psychological preparation. It was fascinating to learn and see the why of what made Tracy not only a formidable shooting champion but a great detective. Schmidt was beyond a formidable challenger and his presence was always in the background. My nerves were shattered as I waited for the climax that was inevitable.
the narration…
Emily Sutton-Smith will always be the voice of this series in my head and never more so than with this story. She defined Tracy and her storytelling skills were perfectly suited here.
the bottom line…
I found it hard to put this down with so much at stake. This was the heart of Tracy Crosswhite, forcing her to face all that she found precious and cared about. She was put to the test in ways she’d never faced and made vulnerable. While I disagreed with some of her choices, those she made were in character. I love this series and hope it never ends.

Tracy Crosswhite can outshoot almost anyone, but when she has trouble with a police drill she’s drawn back into her past in a way she never expected. Going back to her roots might just bring back her equilibrium, but will it save her and her family. Once again Dugoni draws us in from the get go and has us turning pages quickly to find out the final outcome. With his real characters and suspenseful plots, this is one you won’t want to miss. Enjoyed this even more as a dual read/listen. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC and ALC of this book.

I am absolutely captivated by this series featuring the remarkable Tracy Crosswhite, and Book #11 does not disappoint!
Detective Tracy Crosswhite is typically the epitome of composure, but her interrogation of Erik Schmidt, a suspect linked to two chilling cold cases associated with her sister’s murder, tests her like never before. After a harrowing incident during training leaves her haunted by nightmares, she seeks solace in Cedar Grove with her family. But when an unexpected legal loophole releases Schmidt, her unease deepens—she fears he may be stalking her. Now, ensnared in a perilous game of cat and mouse, Tracy must harness her formidable skills and unwavering determination to outmaneuver Schmidt and safeguard her loved ones.
Tracy is an inspiring figure, resilient in the face of adversity. She has endured so much that few things can unsettle her. This narrative kept me glued to the edge of my seat from start to finish. Each book showcases Tracy's personal growth alongside her family dynamics and her evolving investigative skills. The supporting characters remain steadfastly by her side, adding depth to the story. The introduction of Lydia, the granddaughter of her former shooting instructor who is on the spectrum, was a brilliant touch that enriched the narrative.
The author masterfully conveys police procedures, making the complexities understandable and engaging. I found myself engrossed in the world of shooting competitions and learned how they sharpen accuracy. The storyline is not only captivating but also filled with suspense and tension that keeps the reader guessing.
The narrator’s performance is truly commendable, breathing life into these characters with a straightforward tone that perfectly encapsulates Tracy’s essence.
If you have a penchant for suspense, police drama, and fiercely strong female protagonists, this book is a must-read. Be sure to mark your calendars for May 27, 2025—you won’t want to miss this thrilling installment!

A Dead Draw is the eleventh book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, and it quickly became one of my favorites.
In this story, Tracy is dealing with trauma from her past and makes the difficult decision to step away from work. She hopes a quiet break with her family will help, but the peace doesn't last long. A former suspect is released and may be hunting her, leading to a tense and emotional game of cat and mouse.
This book dives deeper into Tracy’s personal struggles, which made it more emotional than the usual police procedural.
I really liked the insight into her past and her shooting background, it added a new layer to her character. The narration by Emily Sutton-Smith was excellent as always, making the story even more immersive.
If you enjoy thrillers with heart and suspense, this is a great listen. I can’t wait for the next one!
Very grateful to the publisher for my alc copy through NetGalley, opinions are my own

A Dead Draw
Book 11 of Tracy Crosswhite series

Mystery & Thrillers
A Dead Draw is book eleven in a favorite series of mine, Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series. Detective Tracy Crosswhite is haunted by her past. She retreats from her job in Seattle with husband Dan and daughter Daniella to have a break from the turmoil that her memories are causing, including nightmares and hallucinations. In addition, she is fearful because of happenings related to two cold case killings.
This book is one of the best, in my opinion, in the series. Dugoni has consistently sharply developed his main character, so the story is more than the criminal and procedural happenings, but also a deep study of Tracy's feelings and emotions within herself and in her relationships. Emily Sutton-Smith is simply outstanding in her narration of this series, bringing to life every detail and each moment of suspense. I am glad that she gets to narrate Tracy's story.
I received a complimentary advance listener's copy from NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing / Brilliance Audio. My review is my own.

The past comes full circle
Along the journey of the Tracy Crosswhite series we have learned about her sister Sara's death, her fathers suicide, her work as a detective, her move to cold cases, and her killing of her sister's killer before he could kill her. Getting to know her family both those genetic and chosen. In book 11, we are given a glimpse into the long ago history of the Crosswhite family before the deaths. We see some old friends, such as Tracy's old shooting coach Mason Pettibone and gain some new friends in Mason's granddaughter, Lydia. Having read the entire, it felt like coming home and completing the circle. For those who have not followed the series will not feel lost as the backstories are woven in.
While it took some time for the investigation to get going the build up help to set the mindset that would later save Tracy. Due to events early in the story, less police procedural work is done which gives this book a different feel from the other books. While it may not be for everyone, I enjoyed the dive into Tracy's shooting history. In other books, it is skimmed over. It felt like key drivers for both Tracy and Erik, who was a disgraced expert marksman.
While I did question some decisions at the time they were made, I later got "why" they were and how it moved the story along. Some actually humanized the characters a bit more, making bad decisions in the heat of the moment. That being said, they were still off character for those who know this series.
I enjoyed the weaving in of the town history, family history, Willy Wonka, spaghetti westerns, single person shooter games, online gaming, and shooting competitons. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that pitch discussion. There are a lot of other elements mixed in so well you might think they had always been there.
I did miss Kinsington, Vic, Del and the rest of the gang, I think I understand why they had to have a lesser presence in this outing. Maybe I am projecting or it is wishful thinking, but I believe I see where the next book is headed and this shift was necessary to lay the foundation for what I hope is coming. I am super excited about the possibility, waiting on pins and needles so to speak for it to drop.
Thank to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and Brilliance Audio for the early listen and opportunity to share my unfiltered thoughts.
Happy Reading!

I am always thrilled to have another Tracy Crosswhite book to read. Tracy is now in cold cases where they have tried to sideline her. Chief Weber is still out to get her because Tracy knows of her corruption but Nolasco seems to have become more neutral after working a case with her.
A Dead Draw has Tracy's past coming up to harass her. Erik Schmidt, charged with murder gets released after evidence is ruled inadmissible. Apparently Schmidt was friendly with Edmund House in prison, who is the man who killed her sister. After crossing his path, Tracy starts having nightmares again. Then she has a "daymare" and fails a shooting test.
Tracy and her family go home to Cedar Grove to be safer and gain perspective. Tracy starts taking shooting lessons again with her original shooting trainer, Mason and his granddaughter, Lydia. In addition to the methods Tracy learned as a teen, now with Lydia they also use video games to improve focus and speed. Lydia is autistic, very smart and remembers everything.
Schmidt, of course, follows her to Cedar Grove. He starts going after all those in Tracy's life and plans to get to her. Tracy has continued to train and investigate. She has learned more about Schmidt, trying to find more evidence to charge him.
I love the way Tracy investigates and is kind to others. It was great to see some members of her old team. I liked her new detente with Nalasco. My favorite was her relationship with Mason and Lydia. Lydia is a joy. Tracy encourages her to try a job. Then works with her to get a better job.
This series is just amazing and I highly recommend it. I would read in order, both because they are all excellent and to follow along with the personal and career developments Tracy has.
Narration:
Emily Sutton-Smith continues to be Tracy in my head. She has narrated the entire series. With the distinct voices she uses for characters, I know them when I hear them. I'm comfortable with both her male and female voices and her performance definitely enhanced my enjoyment. I was able to listen comfortably at 1.75x speed.

It’s been a long time since my last Dugoni book but this one has put him back on my to read list. A very good story, fully developed characters, and a satisfying ending.

Using her training, wits, and strength to defeat a master criminal are the words of the publisher describes this book, I agree that these describe the story, but how to describe Tracy’s world of constant battle to defeat these serious criminals. I’m so grateful the author continues to show the life and progress of her career and family life. Loved it!
Borrow it, buy it be sure to read or listen to this great installment of Detective Tracy Crosswhite.

This is my fault for not seeing that this was book 11 in a series and I have a hard time not reading books in order. I just felt I was missing some things and didn't connect entirely with the characters.

Just when you think that Tracy has her past behind her, it comes hard and fast. This one had me on the edge of my seat, especially with Erik Schmidt. It was so hard to put the book down. I wanted to see how it would all end. I really loved seeing a new character and I hope we see more of her as well. Returning to Cedar Grove where it all started was bittersweet, but trust me that emotion disappears quickly with the suspense. I did miss Kinsington, and Fazzio in this book. They appear but I would have loved to see more of them. I loved the twisted cat and mouse game. It really increased the ante. The narrator, Emily Sutton-Smith does a great job portraying Tracy and some of the other characters. I’ve gotten used to her voice throughout the series.
A very special thanks to Brilliance Audio + Netgalley for the ALC.

Have you ever seen a movie that was a part of a series and you weren’t really familiar with the characters but you were still able to enjoy it? And after the movie you felt compelled to watch all of the movies that leas up to that? That’s how I feel about Dead Draw. This is book 12 in a series and I haven’t read a single book leading up to this but I was still able to follow along and piece thing together via context. The pacing was just enough to keep me interested without rushing. And I’m so interested in the main character Tracy Crosswhite that I’ve already grabbed book one to start from the beginning.
A dead draw follows Detective Tracy Crosswhite as a part of her past comes back to haunt her and puts her and her loved ones in the crosshairs of a rather dangerous man. If you’re familiar with this trope, you know how this goes but at the same time there are intentional twists to make it just a smidge unpredictable. I definitely enjoyed this read!

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book, and while I love the familiarity of the characters and the story, this was the 11th of the series and what more can happen?
At this point, Tracy just needs to live a peaceful life. So much has happened by this book I was losing track what tragedies happened to each person. I understand they're detectives but how much drama does one death create from decades ago? I feel like this needed to be wrapped up nicely and calmly to end the murders, suspicion, and drama.
Thankful for the same narrator because she's great, but this book could have tied the ending with a nice bow because I'm sure there will be another next year. 3/5!

I’ve always been drawn to series that mix law themes with family struggles, emotional depth, and action, and this one does it better each time. The characters are always put in situations where their loyalty to family and their pursuit of justice are tested. This time around, the tension was higher than ever, and the fear they experienced, combined with their determination to do what’s right, made for an unforgettable experience.
The emotional weight of the decisions these characters make is one of the things I love most about this series. It’s not just about following the law or the action scenes; it’s about seeing the characters wrestle with their inner conflicts. They’re constantly torn between doing what’s right for justice and protecting those they love. It adds such depth to the story, and I felt deeply invested in their choices.
The action scenes were intense, as always, but it’s the emotional stakes that really drive the story. I couldn’t help but feel connected to the characters, rooting for them to find a way to balance their personal lives with the demands of their larger, more dangerous worlds. It’s that mix of heart and action that makes this series so compelling and keeps me coming back every time.
Once again, this series has delivered everything I love: gripping action, complex moral decisions, and powerful family moments. It’s never predictable, and I always find myself emotionally hooked. I’m already looking forward to the next part, eager to see how the characters will face even more challenges ahead.

I am a diehard Tracy fan, so seeing this book available to review got me excited. Thanks to NetGalley for the ALC copy of this book. It is rare for my library to have access to the audiobook format, so this was a wonderful win for me! Every book Dugoni does a great job to set the reader in place and update about Tracy since the last book. The storyline was interesting since it brought a character from her past into the current while also introducing us to a new character that I hope we will see more of in future books, please! This one will pull at your worrying heart since it involves her child more than any other since her birth. And if you love dogs, you'll love these two! Thanks for the great novel, all opinions are my own.

Made the mistake of not seeing this was the 11th book in a series I had not read but I found the book to still be enjoyable even without reading the first books.
I got a good glimpse into what likely transpired leading up to this book and found that the characters seemed somewhat fleshed out and the specters from the past clear.
I also enjoyed the nod to the “spaghetti western” with the shooting completion aspect and ending scene location.
The antagonist was less scary for me perhaps because I didn’t have all that lead up or backstory. He was creepy to be sure, but less of a focus somehow?
In all, it was a well written book that maybe didn’t catch my attention quite as much as I’d hoped but which did entertain me to the end.
My rating: 3.3*

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ALC. All opinions are my own.

I loved this, I actually read the first book in the series when it came out, and did not realize it was a series. I liked that even though I have not read the other books in the series this was easy for me to follow along. Now that I know there are more books I definitely plan on reading the rest. The narration on this was awesome, I absolutely loved Lydia’s character as well as her and Tracy’s relationship. This was awesome all the way round from writing to the production.

Although I missed Tracy working a case , as a long time trader of the series I enjoyed seeing more of Tracy’s life. I also liked Lydia and kept hoping she was secretly sarahs daughter.
