An anticipated release that did not disappoint! This one also focuses on familial relationships. It's eerie and atmospheric. Definitely going to be a popular release! Multigenerational and very emotional. This story is as stunningly beautiful as the cover.

Cursed Daughters is maybe my most anticipated book of the year. I loved Oyinkan Braithwaite's first novel My Sister the Serial Killer and have been eagerly awaiting her next book. Cursed Daughters did not disappoint. We follow three women of the Falodun family through three different decades as they navigate the impact of the curse on the women of their family. Each daughter is destined to have any man they love to be in vain. Braithwaite's writing is as compelling and beautiful as in first novel. Highly recommend this book for those looking for those looking for a reflective, emotional, but still humorous novel about overcoming family trauma and superstition.

4.5 stars. Oyinkan Braithwaite does it again. But, instead of a fun horror novel like _My Sister, the Serial Killer_, we have an unsettling literary novel. While not horror, it is eerie, spooky, uncanny. Braithwaite’s voice, pacing, subtleties are all spot on, and as more became revealed, I found myself cheering it on in delicious satisfaction. It was the kind of plot for which I knew things were going to happen but she leaves us waiting in anticipation for it.

Ooh...I was so excited to be able to read a new book by Oyinkan Braithwaite and I was not disappointed.

While different from My Sister, the Serial Killer, Cursed Daughters is still sharp, brilliantly written, and wonderfully emotional. Our two cousins broke my heart on more than one occasion - in fact, all the women in our little family did.

I also loved how the author gives us the mix of modern Lagos, but still leaves a hint of older Nigerian culture, religion and belief.

I'll warn you that the book is so very sad. You have these gorgeous, vibrant young women who start to self-destruct when faced with the idea of the family curse. I won't tell you if the curse is real or not...I'll just say that your heart bleeds for them.

A truly excellent read!

I absolutely loved this book. Cursed Daughters is a captivating blend of family drama, superstition, and the determination to break free from generational patterns.

What stood out to me most was how seamlessly Onyinkan Braithwaite blended modern Lagos life with deep-rooted superstition and generational trauma. The family curse gave the story a haunting depth, while the reincarnation element made it truly unique. I loved the vivid, immersive writing, the layered and complex female characters, and the balance of humor and heartbreak that made the story feel so authentic. The romance subplot added an emotional spark, but what stayed with me most were the themes of love, resilience, and the courage it takes to break free from cycles that have shaped a family for generations.

A beautifully told, emotionally powerful story that I highly recommend.

Thank you to @onyinkanbraithwaite, @netgalley, and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite is a darkly witty and sharp-edged tale of family, secrets, and revenge. It centers on three estranged sisters brought back together by their mother’s death—and her final, unsettling wish. As they navigate old grudges, hidden betrayals, and the weight of family expectations, they’re forced to confront the curses, both literal and figurative, that have shaped their lives. Braithwaite’s signature blend of biting humor and suspense keeps the story tense yet entertaining, exploring themes of sisterhood, loyalty, and the cost of survival. While the plot takes some wild turns, its bold voice and memorable characters make it an addictive, page-turning read

“It will not be well with you. No man will call your house, home. And if they try, they will not have peace. Your daughters are cursed— they will pursue men, but the men will be like water in their palms. Your granddaughters will love in vain. Your great granddaughters will labour for acknowledgement, but they will fall short of other women. Your daughters, your daughter’s daughters and all the women to come will suffer for man’s sake.”

And this curse was issued by A first wife to the pretty and confident second wife-Feranmi Falodun-and has affected the Falodun family for generations. No woman has been able to hold on to a man or husband. Eniiyi a five or six times great granddaughter doesn’t believe in this curse and when she falls in love with a great guy, it seems like the curse will finally be broken.

But…Ms. Oyinkan Braithwaite has crafted a wickedly humorous story filled with dramatic twists and unnerving turns that will totally captivate readers, leaving them constantly hoping, grasping and cheering for the curse to be broken. Could Eniiyi end up being brokenhearted?

Ms. Braithwaite’s prose is lyrical and beautifully engaging making this book unputdownable. She weaves indigenous beliefs with modern youthful skepticism, always bounded by familial love and wisdom. Eniiyi is a complicated protagonist, because her birth is believed to be a reincarnation of her Aunt who died the same day she was born, hmmm? Is that possible?

Ms. Brathwaite skillfully builds this novel in a non-linear manner jumping back and forth in time and shifting the perspective between generations all the while balancing tensions and imbuing the characters with real life emotions!

This is very clearly a 5⭐️ effort.
I’m very grateful to Netgalley and Doubleday books for providing an advanced DRC. Book will drop November 4, 2025, buckle up for an emotional ride!

Oyinkan Braithwaite delivers an unique story about love, family, and inherited beliefs. Cursed Daughters blends the modern energy of Lagos with the pull of old traditions, and culture.

Eniiyi Falodun is born on the day her cousin Monife is buried, and her family immediately begins to see the connection. The resemblance is uncanny, and soon the belief takes hold that Eniiyi is Monife returned to life. Alongside this superstition is the Falodun curse, a legacy that ensures no man will find peace under their roof. For three generations, this curse has left behind a household of strong but abandoned women as the story goes.

When Eniiyi rescues a young man from drowning and falls in love, she finds herself confronting the full force of her family’s history. Braithwaite captures the tension between hope and inevitability. The novel moves fluidly between romance, family drama, and moments of magic drawing us into the heart of Lagos.

The story does not treat superstition as something purely harmful. Braithwaite shows how family lore is inevitable but the members can chose how to negotiate and translate it. Eniiyi’s fight to break free from the patterns of the past becomes represents choice, destiny, and the courage it takes to imagine a different future in a changing culture. #doubleday #OyinkanBraithwaite #curseddaughters

Her prose is lyrical yet biting, pulling the reader into a world both familiar and surreal. Oyinkan Braithwaite does it again. This is a slow-building novel, but once you're midway through you are completely invested in each of the characters...and by the end, you find yourself unable to put it down until you find out what happens. Thank you for an advance copy in exchange for review.

Cursed Daughters is a deft and quietly devastating novel—its emotional weight accumulates subtly, like dust only visible when the light slants just right. Oyinkan Braithwaite takes the idea of a generational curse—“No man will ever call your house his home”—and renders it not as spectacle, but as a haunting metaphor for inheritance: of grief, of myth, of roles women are handed and expected to perform.

At the novel’s centre is Eniiyi, born the same day her Aunt Mo dies, and forever caught in the uneasy space between self and story, myth and memory. Braithwaite’s prose is elegant and spare, each line carrying far more than it says. The humour is sly, brittle, and never undermines the deep interiority of her characters—mothers, aunts, cousins—each navigating the blurry border between superstition and survival.

There’s a lingering tension throughout: the women’s longing to shed the past, and the quiet, persistent dread that maybe the curse is real. The sea, a recurring motif, mirrors this beautifully—familiar yet unknowable, comforting and dangerous at once.

Braithwaite doesn’t shout; she murmurs truths that hit hard. Cursed Daughters is a remarkable exploration of fate, freedom, and the ghosts we carry.

Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite is an intergenerational book about women supposedly suffering from a generational curse which prevents the women in the family from having a successful marriage. Then comes Eniiyi who is presumably a reincarnation of her aunt and seems to be following her aunt's tragic footsteps. I love how the author was able to weave superstitious beliefs into a deep story of self-discovery and triumphing over background issues. This was a good read and I love how it all came together in the end.
I got the ARC from Doubleday Books via Netgalley. This is my honest review

This is a rich intergenerational story centering women haunted by a family curse that they believe dooms their romantic relationships with men. Following the author’s debut My Sister the Serial Killer, this novel is much more complex and layered with emotional truths. I thoroughly enjoyed the Nigerian cultural references, and getting to know Monife and Eniiyi especially. I hoped for a little more humor, but it’s clear Braithwaite is skilled at depicting complex family relationships. This novel is tragic, yet honest and relatable. It captures the complexities of modern womanhood, and the tug between tradition, familial expectations, and agency over our own lives. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

Cursed Daughters is about intergenerational curses and trauma, their reverberating effects, and how the women of the Falodun family cope. Written from the perspectives of various women within the family, we see how their beliefs and behaviors are influenced by the tragic events that befall them and how these sometimes come into conflict with one another. There is hope, resignation, determination, and so much more that drive the story.

This is a gorgeously written story, spanning multiple generations, about a family of Nigerian women affected by a curse. Ebun Falodun gives birth to her daughter Eniiyi the same day her cousin Monife is buried. The baby bears a striking resemblance to Monife, which only becomes stronger as she grows up. Her family believes her to be the reincarnation of Monife, and this causes problems for Eniiyi throughout her life.

Despite an intriguing plot and cast of characters, I wasn't a fan of the time skips. I also wish we got to learn more about the Falodun women outside the context of the curse. Still, the writing was beautiful. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.

From the first page, Cursed Daughters had me hooked. Braithwaite weaves humor, heartbreak, and superstition into a beautifully layered story about a girl born under the shadow of a family curse—and the belief that she’s the reincarnation of her dead cousin. Eniiyi is a brilliant, stubborn, and utterly relatable narrator, caught between her own desires and the weight of generations before her. I loved how the novel explores the tension between modern life and inherited beliefs, especially through the lens of love, rivalry, and what we owe to family. It’s sharp, eerie, and unexpectedly funny—a haunting but hopeful read that lingers long after the final page.

This is a crazy book about crazy women in a family in Lagos and all of those women live under the family curse. They will never live happily with the men they love. Throw in one of the main characters looking just like the cousin she just buried and she doesn't know if she's her cousin reincarnated or her own.person. There are family secrets, rivalries and a little bit of superstition. It all makes for a fun romp.
